The way the Light Level system currently works is this: Any item that drops will have a higher Light Level than your current overall LL until you hit the current Soft Cap (the Soft Cap for the Season 15 is 1270). As you’re currently below the Soft Cap, just play any activity that you realistically can and you will randomly receive upgraded gear. Once your overall LL reaches 1270, you will only be able to get gear with higher Light Levels from activities that drop Powerful or Pinnacle gear (they will be listed as such once you reach the Soft Cap) and from Prime Engrams (these will drop from slain enemies as random bright purple engrams and you’ll know when they can drop for you as you’ll see a visible buff in your equipment screen). Once you reach the Hard Cap (which is currently 1320 for Season 15) you will need to rely on Pinnacle drops to increase your overall Light Level to the current Pinnacle Cap of 1330. Gear will not drop at Light Levels beyond the current Pinnacle Cap. —— Aside from all this there is the level of your Seasonal Artifact (which adds to your overall Light Level regardless of your gear) which can be increased by simply gaining experience. This is very slow and should be viewed as a small bonus rather than your primary method of gaining levels (which is through gear drops). (΄◉◞౪◟◉`)

  • Interesting! I do not have any of the DLCs yet. I feel like they are quite pricey. Do t DLCs have any impact on ability to reach the best gear in the game and/or progress? I played a lot of Raids + Nightfall in the past in Destiny 1 as well as all the other Weekly Raids and Nightfall that reset and provide top-end gear.

The DLCs and Seasonal content will present you more opportunities to obtain Powerful and Pinnacle gear drops once you’ve reach the Soft Cap (allowing you to raise your Light Level faster), but are not absolutely necessary to increase your Light Level beyond that point. As far as the “best gear”, certain guns can only be achieved from specific activities, and a portion of those activities can only be accessed if you purchase specific DLCs. As to whether it is worth it to buy access to said content at this moment, that is largely on a case by case basis. It is worth noting that the Forsaken campaign content will be Vaulted with the release of the Witch Queen expansion in February, and as such will temporarily become free to play for everybody beforehand (more info on that can be found here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Explore/Detail/News/50752 ). Also of note is that a new system of “forging weapons” will be introduced with the Witch Queen expansion, meaning you will be able to better curate the types of weapon perks you can use. This means that purchasing access to additional content right now for the express purpose of farming god rolls on Legendary weapons might not be the best way to spend your money (although Exotic items and the Stasis subclass available through Beyond Light might make compelling reasons to purchase that DLC). Third item of note is the upcoming “mini-DLC” that is the Bungie 30th Anniversary content, which will have a new dungeon based loosely on the D1 Loot Cave, which will award a new version of the Gjallarhorn upon completion (among other things). As such you may wish to do some research to determine if that is worth your money. (΄◉◞౪◟◉`)
