Clerics resurrect the dead, truly returning them to life. Necromancers reanimate the dead. That is giving the remains of the dead the ability to move around, but enslaved to the will of the necromancer. One is a gift. The other is a curse.

 • Not necessarily true. Assuming we’re speaking in general here (as opposed to a specific canon), there are plenty of examples of necromancers raising the dead who still retain their free will. Granted, it’s a lot less common, but still.

 • In those cases, it's usually a result of: 1) A necromancer binding a soul back to it's host, similar to a Cleric's resseruction. The creature is not considered an undead. 2) In rare cases, an undead may break their bond whatever animates them and regain their will. These are called awakened undead. Speaking of, there's a neat homebrew for playing awakened undead.

That’s kinda my point; not all necromancy is just reanimation.
2) In rare cases, an undead may break their bond whatever animates them and regain their will. These are called awakened undead. Rather than calling on divine favor or bargaining with higher powers, you are personally ripping souls out of the afterlife. So, yeah, same effect, but cool flavor.
