The Drifter and His Taken
Decided to make a theory post with the new Invitation of the Nine. If you have not watched it DO NOT READ THIS! Go and do it and watch the cutscene. Go. Leave. Ok if you’re still reading you’ve watched it
So before the invitation came out, it was known that the Drifter controlled his Primevals, and most likely had complete control over them. With the cutscene, it showcased him summoning one (it was dope) but he did not control it. The Emmisary had to portal it away (or whatever they do when they die). The only difference between that cutscene and the other times we know he has summoned Primevals is the Haul. Now just a chunk of ice shouldn’t be able to control Taken right? Well I think it is more than that. I think that it houses a controller of sorts, that without it the Taken from the Drifter would run rampant with no control. We know it’s a portal to unknown space, where there are a lot of Taken, and what seems like Primevals. What if that is where he now summons them from? And his partnership with the Nine keep them in line? That would mean they would be “domesticated” to the Nine, which is very interesting. The cutscene could be interpreted as showing the Nine have control over the Taken, since the Emmisary portaled it away without lifting a finger. If I am right about this, then that means multiple beings can control the Taken, since Savathun is creating Taken under her control. This could also mean the the Nine have replaced Oryx, and not Savathun like previously thought. This is a very rough theory that is open to change so I hope y’all will inform me of what I missed. Cheers and thanks for listening (reading whatever)

  • I had the same thought and been hesitant to say anything cuz I'm not confident enough in my knowledge of the lore. But from what I've seen and read these last few months...the way Drifter can control the Taken...reminds me alot of Oryx. And when the Emissary said "only 3 have transcended their design...an old blade resharpened anew"...correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that also sound like Oryx, with his whole transformation and his blade? We took a piece and had to reforge it basically. "And the Dredgen" at this point Im convinced when the Nine speak of Dredgen they are referring to Drifter. At first I thought it could be Drifter leading/controlling the Taken, but after what the Emissary said I believe he is just their puppet, a pawn. It very well could be the Nine controlling them, and would make more sense. He was able to control them before he got involved with them, but not completely...which I did find interesting, and glad someone else brought it up cuz my head has been spinning with theories and such since that whole cutscene lol

    • I believe that since the Haul is a piece of the Ascendant Plane, that the Drifter is technically viewed as a Hive God or god in general to these Taken. He's simply their Oryx. Drifter, the Taken Dude.

      • If the drifter has complete control over his Taken primevals, then this could be bad. I shall report my findings to Aunor immediately

        • I don't recall it ever saying he had total control over the Taken. He just sort of points them and in a direction and they go. He only uses the Motes of Dark as bait to attract the Taken.
What actually happened to that Dredgen anyway? It's not like he died. The Captain basically just knocked him over. Why didn't he just get back up and try to kill Drifter again?
• Also wondering, aren't the takens attracted to light like bugs to bug-light zapper?

            • <Savathun is very much the Taken monarch, but the Nine have interesting powers. Perhaps the Drifter could not control the Captain because of the Mote's strength. Perhaps the stronger Mote, the more control can be exerted. He had no issue controlling 9 Primevals into annihilating a Cabal scout group, but that Mote was compressed from nearly 100 others.>

              • Hmm... I feel like it's a little too early to come up with any concrete explanations, but very well done in your research.
