Question of the day.

The very first thing I thought of after defeating panoptes: Is he really dead? (Severe Oryx discussion flashback) Anyway, there is a couple reasons I ask this. One of those reason is, we fought panoptes inside the simulation. I don't mean to be that guy, but maybe what we killed was just a simulation, or maybe it wasn't. However, point 2: let's assume Panoptes WAS really destroyed. In theory, could the vex not just make a realistic copy of Panoptes in the simulation and take it over. Sagira said the simulations were real enough to kill you. If they can make a realistoc copy of almost anything, why not a replacement Panoptes? And if they're afraid of the simulant Panoptes being immediately found, could they not just alter it slightly so it would take just a little more time to find? Alternatively, could they not just make a bunch of simulant Panoptes? Possible explination for that could be something along the lines of Panoptes being a special case in terms of simulating, or maybe a simulated Panoptes can't take control of the simulation. Bonus question: So if the stuff inside the simulation is realistic and act like they would in the real world, could the things inside theoretically leave the simulation? If they could, would that maybe explain where the vex get their plethora of troops? However, that would also mean the vex actually have controlled simulant Fallen, Cabal, and maybe hive leaders. However(x2) maybe that is exactly how Panoptes dark future came to be. Total annihilation from within would be a game ender. But, the more likely stance on that is the simulated stuff can't exists outside the simulation becuase they require power from it or something like that. Props to the person(s) who can enlighten us on this subject. Sincerely, Fal Chavam.

  • I was hoping for a twist with the raid lair and how the panoptyes we killed in the campaign was just a simulation and the real one was in the raid lair but sadly this didn't happen

The Vex run by logic and order, meaning they will not create a simulated Panoptes just because the real one died. In real life you can’t just go “oh it’s dead, poof here it’s back” so the Vex will not being themselves to do it is ven in a simulation. That is the one real weakness they seem to have; a lack of imagination. As for there being multiple simulated Panoptes running around in the Forest (so that if one dies there are still plenty of others), it would be advantageous to have a Panoptes in every time line to make sure it survives, BUT the Vex would not do that because it would cause clutter and cross-planning and more than one of the same Mind existing in the same timeline may not fit Vex standards. We also know that the Vex can enter the Forest just like us, and since it’s easier to manage things from the inside it’s obvious that the Panoptes we killed (and possibly all the other Vex within the simulations) is real It is possible that in the future the Vex may build a new Mind to run the Forest or try using another Restorative Mind (if they have anymore), but Panoptes really is dead Answer to bonus question: The simulations exist within the minds of the Vex, so although they may have the intelligence to try escaping the Forest, as soon as they find the real portal out (because there are almost definitely simulated exits) they will cease to exist because they are simply a mental image, just like a dream or a thought

    • We had to track down his actual “body” in the simulation so I think we actually killed him. They might can replicate but I think they explained how he was formed in the first place and can’t be replicated. In regards to if simulations can escape, I think that’s what Osiris is protecting against. Or he’s trying to erase all simulations so they can’t find one that works in the real world. I didn’t like the simulation aspect of it since technically it’s all fake and pretty much just gave us a look into what Osiris has been up to which was cool but useless to me lore-wise. Siva was the same to me. Oryx was the best storyline I’ve seen so far

    • They wouldn't be able to take a simulation out of the forest I think, it be a wasted simulation trying to simulate something if one of the key proponents is dead. If, like you said, that was the real panoptes

    • My real question is: if we can go forward and backward in time, can I get my D1 Supers back, and my gun categories? I would pay Tess real money for that. If not, doesn’t matter if the target is real or a simulation, whole concept is dead anyway..

    • Maybe thats the reason why Osiris is in the Forest? To stop the vex from doing this.

    • Panny... was the weakest boss I ever recall in D1 & D2 world. I thought Gary was easy to take down... even using only side arms and hand guns... to make it interesting. But Panny established a real horrible low for the franchise.

      • Well the Pantopes we defeated was the real one. They might bring him back with a restorative mind or maybe try to sim him. Osiris did make a root mind like that, so may be possible. Oryx and the Hive are very different then the Vex on a fundamental level, comparing one to the other just doesn’t work. Although I did ponder it. Oryx can’t be rezzed as he was for now, Vex can’t sim him well enough. What they could do is sim Aurash and infect her with Worm larvae and make her into Auryx. Auryx would then need to reclaim her powers to become Oryx. Technically, possible. Likelihood of happening? Slim. There are two other Hive Gods to fill in for him. As to your bonus question: They can. The whole timeline thing regarding the Vex was mostly assumed to be real timelines and their sims were just computer data. The Forest shows us the “timelines” are just their quasi-real sims. They are “real” because the Forest (and the Vault of Glass) uses the power of throneworlds, the ontological power to make the rules of a created pocket universe. Like Oryx and Crotas throneworlds. These are bubbles within our universe. In the Book of Sorrows they said the throneworld power would be important later to their research and we see how. They were able to partially sim paracausal power with it. We also see in the BoS that things made in these worlds are real and can come out. The annihilator totem for instance. So yes things ought to be able to come out but they don’t control them like puppets unless they make them like puppets. So when Skolas pulled Fallen out of the Vet Network, he was pulling simulated Fallen. Interestingly it also explains the Exo Stranger and her rifle. It would explain how she knew where to pop up all those times over the years that the rumors of her came from. It also explains why when she was traveling while watching us she didn’t know exactly what was going on in the moon. The sims aren’t perfect and the Vex haven’t been there to know how to sim the Hive activity 100%. Finally x2. The Vex always lost to the Darkness because they couldn’t sim them to plot a way to victory, presumably. There is also the causal vs paracausal issue, that gives the Darkness a major advantage. However it was assumed that to get the power of the Light it had to be gifted or the Darkness had to be gained through the Worm Pact. The need to feed the worm may be avoided by taking a Worm by force but we haven’t seen that in action, may or may not be true, could just be a trick. D2 shows that Light can be taken by force. So it may be true for the Dark as well. So in our saving the Vex from the Darkness in 1, we enabled them to figure out a way to win and that is the Dark Future we see. So somehow they found a way to defeat the Dark and the Light, which is amazing since they couldn’t even beat just one before. Something major has been set in motion, which is what Osiris was hinting at when he said a living Traveler changes things for good and bad. That’s why we see the black ships coming back. They caused the Collapse and then left. Leaving us and our enemies to duke it out. So this hints to the greater cosmic conflict of the Dark vs Light. Also with the mention of powers greater than the Light? Oh yeah, something big is coming. I have high expectations for the Rasputin dlc. As the Warmind who controlled the solar defenses during the Collapse, he may be able to shed light on those black ships and what attacked us.

      • When you kill say hive or cabal in the simulation, they teleport with a vex effect. That means the enemy was a simulation. The vex explode and don’t teleport away, meaning they were not a simulation. Panoptes didn’t disappear with a vex effect either, meaning we really did kill Panoptes. Also, Osiris would have still seen the same outcome had we killed a simulation of panoptes.

        • Well if you follow the books of sorrow from the Taken King, you'll recall that Oryx was actually able to resurrect both Savathun and their other sister from permanent death due to enacting acts that reflected the powers that their worms gifted them. That being said, one could assume that Savathun could replicate a similar situation using us as her catalyst.

While panoptes was in the simulation, he was the one running them. According to sagira after she looked at the map, he was always at the same place (think of it like the helm of the ship) The obvious concern: Was it a simulation? No, because as it was said multiple times in the campaign the vex were not able to predict our endeavors in the forest. Our interactions created so many new variables so quickly that they couldn’t run simulations for them before we had introduced another variable. Panoptes knew this, so he tried to take matters into his own hands by stopping us in the forest twice. Once when we saw the dark future, and once when we got the map. Panoptes was panicked and urgent because he knew he couldn’t simulate the alternatives effectively or efficiently enough to actually stop us in time. If panoptes was alive, more simulations would continue, Osiris would realize that and we would know that he’s still alive somewhere in some form. So we killed panoptes, can he be simulated again? Likely no, because the only mind that would have enough information on panoptes and the forest was panoptes himself (I understand it’s a collective mind, but lesser constructs can only do specific actions and store finite amounts of data). There could possibly be a restorative mind to develop, but with Osiris controlling the forest he would let us know or deal with the issue himself before it became effective.

          • A problem is the stupid times you go in there to deal with Cabal. It's made clear that the Vex are simulating a situation where the Cabal are escorting important information. They you get "we can't let the Cabal leave the simulation with whatever they found." Bungie stopped caring about accuracy in their story telling for some time now.

            • Dude, if Bungie bothered with a story, or put this much thought into the DLC, you wouldn't have to ask. Anything is possible and if the Root Mind can be recreated for a lazy Strike, then yes Panoptes can be as well. Just make it up as you go.

              • No, not really. Powerful Vex minds are like light to the vex, they are too powerful and random to simulate. We know it’s real papnoptes as we found his location in the pyramidion, not a simulation. When we shot him down, its hot midnight vex milk dropped to the ground and dried up.Same goes for Atheon, or The templar.Ever wonder why he was not in the simulation? There is an extent to simulation. What they can do however, is create another panoptes.Even worse, they can create a special panoptes for Osiris, much like they did for Saint 14. What I still don’t understand is why we don’t go to china or usa, pick up a nuke , and throw it at the infinite forest.Problem solved.

From what I remember from one of the missions it said that all simulations led to panoptes in that single place. Since we met panoptes at that single point in time we may have destroyed all of the infinite number of panoptes simultaneously since they all followed the exact same course during the fight.

                  • The vex do warp the simulation from within the simulation itself, so it is plausible that they could make a simulated panoptes within the simulation to bring about his dark future. However, since the vex know we can stop panoptes they seem to be smart enough to learn from their previous mistake and not make another one. Panoptes is probably dead, and the vex are using him as an example to learn from their mistakes and become stronger to one day bring about the future they wish to achieve. Panoptes was probably one of the first steps to the vex creating the ultimate being to bring about the end off all things. With leaving the simulation, I believe simulated things have to stay inside, since they are powered by it. That’s why only the true Osiris can leave and not his ghosts or whatever they’re called. So if they decided to replicate panoptes it would only work inside the simulation. He could, however, take over the simulation inside and rule that is he wanted. But that loops back around to us defeating him and such and it would be a waste for the vex.
