The Importance of Patrols

Wow, chalk that up under things I though I would never say... Let me preface by saying I picked up Destiny shortly after the April Update. I played patrol mode mostly for hunting dead ghosts, fragments, cluster, etc. and farming runes for the Court of Oryx. But did I really do Patrols? No. None of us did because no one enjoyed returning to orbit countless times to grind out high value target missions to advance every other quest line in TTK. *shudder* Bungie was all too well aware of our collective lack of enthusiasm towards Patrols. Their response came in RoI with the introduction of the quarantine patrol and the patrol weekly rituals from Shiro-4. Safe to say they were trying really hard to get us in the field swinging a fiery axe and lopping Eliksni in two. And it was fun... for a while. All things grow stale eventually. So why am I bringing up Patrols now? If you’ve been following the forums like I have the last couple of weeks you’ve no doubt read about the exp cooldowns that have been uncovered. I’m not gonna lie I was upset about it as well. There is a small way to circumvent this and keep yourself from throwing your silver at Tess for a chance at the ornament or exotic ship you’ve been grinding bright engrams for. That answer might be Patrols. The exp debuff happens when the same type of activity is completed too many times in a row. It’s like the desire program in games like Monster Hunter. The game and its developers know you want “x” (exp, a piece of gear) because you’re looking at it all the time and so the game lovingly accommodates you by screwing your odds over in the rng or simply needing the raw amount you receive. By doing a patrol between Heroic Public Events you actually receive the “normal” amount of exp after completing each event. Kill Patrols are of course the easiest ones to complete because you don’t even have to kill things. Just pick it up and laugh your way to the Eververse kiosk. I tried this out this week and got more bright engrams in two hours than I did all of last week. Hopefully your results will be consistent with mine.
