"We want abilities to be slightly more rare, but worth it. In the console Beta, the “worth it” part wasn’t quite there yet."

So I'm glad that you all are being up front that you want abilities to be more rare but do you mind sharing the why with us? Without abilities this game is just another FPS with less guns than Border Lands, longer TTK than CoD, less RPG content than Fallout and less unranked PvP modes than Halo. What am I missing that makes it a good idea to make abilities more rare?

  • Agree with the OP and I absolutely despise the argument that "they aren't valuable if they aren't rare"... that's horse sh*t! I'm sorry but if you make sit there shooting peas out of our sh*tty primary weapons for 20 godd@mmed minutes on those bullet sponge bosses while waiting for our supers... you are going to lose A LOT of PVE players. I'll be the first one headed for the door if they don't fix that nonsense. Honestly I'm just floored that they can't separate PVE from PVP. There is absolutely NO SENSE at all at trying to balance both in the same pool. They are NOT the same thing and the fact that they have not figured that out yet is mind boggling. It speaks volumes about the lack of intelligence of the people running the show over there at Bungie.

How are they worth it when everything else is nerfed to shit? Are you saying you'll just make them like they are in D1 already? So, when used alongside all your other nerfed to shit crap in D2 they'll seem powerful? Is that the idea?

      • PvP only gets one of every ability and super at the start that's it. Everything gets buffed to ohk. In exchange you leave PVE alone and everything gets buffed to D1. There I balanced the game for you.

        • No.....not even close Destiny 2 is far from every other FPS. This has to be the most generic and inaccurate argument on the forums regarding the ability changes.

          • Every now and then a video game studio has to close its doors. Whether it was due in part to filing for bankruptcy, their parent company deciding to close up shop, or just unfavorable market conditions. Anybody remember these video game companies that went defunct due to poor choices. LIONHEAD THQ PANDEMIC CLOVER STUDIO GAME REPUBLIC Actually the list is extremely long, to long to write here, suffice it to say I don't think anybody here wants to see Bungie added to that list, so Bungie if you're out there please listen to the majority of your fans, and not the minority. Give us our powers we like feeling powerful in PVE, don't neuter our guardians and weaken our weapons because a few people cry in PVP, and please in any future Destiny game or DLC give us a voice. Thanks for listening Guardians stay strong with the light, and remember whatever class you play were all fighting the same enemy, the Cabal.

            • I don't mind the abilities but the supers, man the supers need longer cool downs in PvP. When there was a super active every other minute in D1 that's when PvP stopped being fun for me. I liked the way it was in the beta.

            • They aren't taking abilities away, just making them more rare, and thus more valuable. I feel that abilities were used as a crutch in d1 for people who couldn't land their shots. I want destiny to have space magic, but space magic shouldn't supercede gunplay in an FPS. If you can't shoot, you shouldn't be winning gunfights Imo. No bailing yourself out by spamming abilities every encounte. , It's time to learn how to shoot, or quite literally die. Making abilities more rare, but also more powerful is a good tradeoff I think

              • I feel like the cool downs are fine. The abilities in part help separate destiny from other games. This could have a lore implication though with us losing the light and everything.

Making abilities more rare makes you think more before you use them. Instead of just spamming abilities all day you clactually have to be strategic about when and where you use them because you know it'll be a while before you get another ability charged up. I favor gunplay over grenade spamming and panic supering so I don't think I'll mind abilities being rarer. I know how to shoot, so I'll be fine. I don't know why I wouldn't like it, but I'll wait to form my full opinion on it. I'm waiting until the pc beta, and probably release when I can play it myself, before I form that opinion.

                  • Because, if the game was Super that and Super this, how do you make anything worth anything? The game should have some sort of skill required, thought process and how and what you choose for a load out.... one of the reasons I think they are toying with not allowing you to change weapon load outs once you start certain events. It would be the same if we had 100 rounds of heavy available at any time...... what's the point of every other weapon when you can run heavy non stop? The same goes with Supers, as the damage the weapon causes increases the amount you can use it decreases. ( or in this case Supers )

                  • Man, a clash match in D1 is nothing but a super/grenade fest. Destiny is not a "real" mmo. It shouldnt be all about managing cooldowns. Thats what D1 turned into once they had to nerf every gun in the game to make everyone happy. Its a shooter first and should be played that way. Who hasnt thrown a lightning grenade from spawn to spawn at the start of a frontier match and landed a double kill? Its insane. And you could do it every 25 seconds.

                          • SLIGHTLY more rare? Running Bad Juju, I could top off my Super in a couple minutes in D1, less with Obsidian Mind and Voidwalker. This game, they're running 7 minutes and change. That's NOT slightly more rare.

                            • For your list of games: Longer TTK than CoD: Opinions are what matter here. Whether it's good or bad is all in the eye of the beholder. Less guns than Borderlands: Every gun in Destiny kills the things within their respective rarity tiers. Optimization and metas are present but where Borderlans has but a trifle of viable weapons of its potential loot pool every weapon in Destiny can do the job without emptying your entire reserve save high RoF Snipers. The viable vs potential weapon gap (not "viable for competitve", but "viable for general gameplay") is much more limited in Borderlands. Less RPG than Fallout: That's because Fallout is an RPG first, "Walking sim" (not a bad thing) second, and shooter third. less unranked PvP modes than Halo: That's because Destiny places a notable degree of focus on PvE with PvP being a bonus vs the other way around. All of the above: Most importantly, while Destiny carries a lot of aspects from the above one cannot deny the "soul" of Destiny. The game itself is a bevy of wildly varying activities that weave a very potent web of options for social play while having the art, sound, and fluidity of gameplay mechanics to make for an enjoyable single player experience anyway given TTK/RoI is the story baseline we're looking at instead of vanilla. As for the actual meat and potatoes of the thread, why reduce ability availability?: Eye of the beholder once more. Back in vanilla weapons were the focus of dealing damage with abilities holding the role of a rubber band mechanic to add flavor to the game and ensure those with a lesser degree of aim have a means to keep pace. Eventually powercreep set in and the result is PvP as it stands where Grenades are the way to start any and all engagements due to their availability followed by a quick tap of a HandC. Instead of developing to the current state they decided to keep to their guns (no pun intended) and head towards a return to form. One I (as a Destiny player who personally wasn't fond of the current state as to've not touched the game in quite some time.) warmly welcome.
