Unpopular Fact: 30fps IS the standard

So a lot of players are up in arms over the annoucement of Destiny 2 being 30fps on Consoles. Really, folks need to calm down. Most devs will tell you that games use resources, and in order to achieve many landmarks they have to as the saying goes: "Borrow from Peter to Pay Paul." This will honestly surprise many of you but the vast majority of Current (Formerly Next-Gen) Console games run at 30fps. Please look at this list for starters: http://m.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/PS4_vs._Xbox_One_Native_Resolutions_and_Framerates I can also list links for every single game on that list's specs for those who need further proof. But I challenge you go look for yourself. You'll be very surprised. (GTA, Thief, Arkham Knight surprised me.) You'll notice the only genre of games that mostly are 60fps are: Arcade, Sports, Racing, Fighting, & Multiplayer First Person Shooter games. I underlined Multiplayer for a reason. These are games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Battlefront, etc. These games are 90% PVP/Multiplayer focused and their Maps/Sandboxes are not teeming with activity. Yes they have big multiplayer battles, but all (64, 40, 50, etc) players are rarely if ever on screen at the exact same time. Also, the game can pull it off because it isn't having to render, animate, & run the AI of various NPCs (People, Animals, etc) alongside processing what players are doing. Where as non-pvp centric/focused games like Borderlands, Dragon Age, Destiny, Farcry, Skyrim, GTA V, Sunset Overdrive, Watchdogs, Assassin's Creed, Shadow of Mordor; all have to animate these sandboxes & give them life. I'm posting this to help give folks clarity, & some peace of mind. The fps of the game isn't the make or break so many dramatic players are making it out to be. Also, it is more standard than 60fps just by sheer game count on that list alone. That said. I 100% get why the PVP playerbase is up in arms. They are use to 60fps multiplayer. In a perfect world, yes, Destiny 2 could take the Gear of War route & have a 30fps pve & 60fps pvp. However, this would require a redesign of the game engine, & various lines of code & etc. Afterall, do note that Destiny 2 has been in development since The Taken King. It takes 2 years minimum to make a current generation game. Add in that even that change could still force Bungie to remove things (IE: Borrow from Peter...) such flora, fauna, extra NPCs, or scale down resolution (1080 turns into 900) in order to achieve 60fps (...to Pay Paul ). Right now there are a half dozen map locales in Destiny 1 with no enemies, nothing. Folks complain heavily about that. Now, we all know this was caused by the last-gen consoles. They simply didn't have enough memory to support more active environments & keep Destiny's quality of Graphics. Comparison: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/next-gen-console-comparison-ps3-ps4-xbox-one-xbox-360/1100-6416217/ If Bungie were to...for the sake of arguement...make this change & announce that they would change fps to 30pve & 60pve. It would push Destiny 2 back 6 months to 1 year minimum. Think about that. (Could you stand Destiny 1 as is for 1 more entire year at a minimum?) Now PVP is a sore topic here because as the Destiny 1 population has lowered, so the seams of PVP in gaming began to show. Long queue times, bad connections due to distances, less even/equal/balanced in skill match ups, etc. So it seems worse than it actually is. Remember typically 15% & less of a game's playerbase visit the forums & 3rd party websites (reddit, etc). No one had an issue with Destiny's fps until the Destiny 2 reveal. (Think back. Was Destiny 1's fps even a frequently discussed topic?) So this was never truly an issue to begin with. So...yes. Currently 30fps is the standard, but 60fps is definitely the end goal. As devs come to understand the tech better. 60 will definitely become the common/standard fps. Odds are Destiny 3 will be 60fps in all aspects. Built from the ground up for it. Currently however if 60fps takes too much from the game, devs lock it at 30. They keep that static across platforms to ensure the experience is consistent & equal across platforms. PC is unlocked due to the nature of PCs, and their ultimate flexibility. Consoles do not have that luxury. No one denies, PS4 Pro & Scorpio can most likely play Destiny 2 at 1080p 60fps. But the game wasn't built for that, & to achieve that they'd need to build & release PS4 Pro & Scorpio exclusive versions. And then there would be no crossplay between PS4 Pro & PS4, XB1 & Scorpio. At this stage Destiny 2 is too far developed. But Destiny 3 will most likely be a different story. Anyways, I hope this can help cool some tempers, untrigger folks, & cause some cease fires. Apologies for the "Trigger" induced by the title. Posted by blueshirtguy: https://youtu.be/Smn_ZUGK7ZQ Very informative from Digital Foundry. Edit: This blew up. (Has a bad feeling it would but wanted to spread information anyway.) Added some clarification. Yes the articles are dated. But the point of them was to provide details. The game list was meant to provide a visual aid in the trends across various game genres. The console specs are just that. Those haven't changed any. Edit 2: Just to clear the air. I am not saying anything like: "We don't need 60fps" or "You are wrong to want 1080p @ 60fps." I am just informing folks that just because a game is 30fps. Does not mean it is a bad game. Does not mean the developer is lazy. There are often reasons for it, trade offs. Many of the best games of this generation (of consoles) are at 30fps.

  • Hahahahaha look at the fanboys fighting tooth and nail to defend bungie. Dude. 60fps is better than 30fps. Dedicated servers are better than p2p connections. Those are the only FACTS you need to know and I don't even have to add sources.

    • To me any multiplayer game should run at > 60 fps. When it comes to singleplayer games i feel like many of the AAA titles are console only and push the limits of the console hardware. I dont mind 30 fps there as long as it doesnt drop beneath very often below 30.

    • No, in a perfect world Destiny 2 would run over 60 frames per second in both PvE and PvP.

This is not a previously last gen shooter anymore. Halo 5 Warzone runs at 60. Halo 5 Story runs at 60. Halo 5, Rainbow Six, Battlefield, Call Of Duty, Battlefront and Far Cry all do 60. It is the standard. People just try to defend Bungie over nothing. And to quote what another said earlier: EDIT: THERE ARE 44 GAMES ON YOUR LIST THAT HAVE 60FPS AND 34 THAT HAVE 30FPS. UNPOPULAR FACT- LESS THAN HALF (<45%) IS A STANDARD NOW APPARENTLY. I GUESS 55% OF GAMES ON THAT LIST BEING 60FPS WAS JUST DISREGARDED BASED ON THE AUTHORS OWN OPINION. SEEMS LIKE A SOLID LOGIC

        • Sorry aer but I don't think D2 should have been made without pvp having 60 fps and dedicated servers, the whole of D1 has that as the number 1 complaint, it should have been the first thing they addressed. Not haha, too bad, too late, buy our product or don't. I'd understand lower frame rate if there was 16vs16 pvp, but there's not - the pvp has gotten reduced to 4vs4 only, on top of dropping old gen which should have boosted our capability - not made it weaker. Just my .02

        • Pc players with good CPU and GPU are just sitting back with popcorn watching you guys beat each other up over 30fps lol if its that important build a goddam PC you dummies. I build mine when I didn't even have a job i just saved money and bought the parts I needed when they were on sale. Its not that expensive to build a PC that can run games on 1080p 60fps. The one I build isn't even the best but it runs everything over 100fps. The only thing I spent a good amount of money on was my 980ti but besides that I got everything else on sale.

          • As a casual PC gamer here is my 2 cents on 60fps vs 30fps. 60fps is nice and smooth but once you become immersed in the game you won't even notice that the game is in 60fps, when switching to my PS4 to play GTA Online yes 30fps jarring but once I became immersed it no longer mattered. So for me at least high fps are numbers used by PC elitist to make themselves feel superior.

            • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrRlhXtwUd0 43mins in Mooch Speculates Scorpio D2 framerate is different and could use Interpolation to get up to 60, this could mean the game still technically runs at 30 fps interms of Networking. Sounds like speculation on an "off the record comment" from a dev person. Pure Speculation.. now we wait for E3.

Lets look at what happened with Destiny 1 old consoles held back the game and then Bungie threw the PS3 and 360 away. Same thing is looking to happen. With the coming of Scorpio and a possible PS5 end of next year. Guess whats going to happen with the XB1 and PS4? If Scorpio can do 60 then it MUST be allowed to. If Not Bungie will be forever locking them selves to a sub-par game on the new console upgrades. Look at PS3 360, Bungie kulled them! Would the PS5 be capped at 30 if it was coming out end of this year?

It really is the standard for 'AAA' titles now though. And in the first person competitive scene 60fps, dedicated servers, custom/private games are the Baseline standard and it's been that way since 2015. Destiny 2 won't be launching with any of that. I, like most people here, I imagine; rarely play destiny anymore. And when I go back to a game that is playing at half the frame rate that I am used to, it is a shock. It feels like I am playing a very old game.

                  • If it's the standard, why not try to go above and beyond the standards? Why settle for mediocre? Regardless of that, the fact that it's locked at 30fps for l consoles is ridiculous. Xbox one S and PS4 pro can both perform better than their standard counterparts, and the Xbox Scorpio with without a doubt be able to hit 60fps with no other performance drops. But instead of utilizing the tech available, they cap it to the lowest common Denominator. You said it yourself, the only time that capped 60fps is always used nowadays is for competitive multiplayer. Since Destiny isn't a competitive multiplayer experience, there's no reason why they can't let those who own the higher tech consoles use the extra power they payed for. Its really just lazy.

Let's not forget that games like bf1 claim they run at 60 fps, but struggle to reach 50 anytime anything moves on your screen, and can often be as low as the mid 30s in combay anyways. Unless you're on playstation pro, which you get about 45 most of the time. All that and you have dynamic resolution scaling It's also inherently unfair for one person to run at 60 fps while the other runs at 30, as the higher fps can reduce input latency by half in some situations. So if they let the pro run at 60 fps but not the base ps4, then you're creating a disparity between those that have a pro and those that don't.

                    • I don't know who you play with but everyone I know/play with, every streamer I watch (literally every single one) has said they want three things in Destiny 2: 1)Dedicated servers 2) 60 FPS matchmaking 3) better ping (Destiny has a ping of 10 apparently). You make assumptions based on inaccurate information in my opinion but I digress.

Easy solution for those that "need" to have 60+ frames. Play on PC. Console games have always been subpar when it comes to graphics. Take Overwatch as an example. It looks like shit on PS4 and xbone and the dynamic scaling makes the graphics blurry and pixilated anytime you have multiple people in one area. Even when rendering the animated back grounds in the menu or the PoTg animation the animation is pixelated and looks like ass in order to hit 60 frames. Long of the short. You get what you pay for.

                    • Plus most movies and TV shows still aren't at 60 fps. Some do film in it just incase someone who keeps up with resolution technology will have access to it. But for the most part when you goto the movie theater or watch TV or Netflix, it's still all in 30 fps.

                      • Yea, they way destiny works is that every part of the world that you can see but actually go to isn't just part of the skybox, it's an actual part of the game. It isn't made to be used by players, but it's still 3 dimensional space, not a 2d skybox like a lot of other games.

Titanfall 2 runs at 60 fps. Very smoothe gameplay/animations... but the overall graphic fidelity and color palette are not great. Its a blue and orange rush of Michael Bay-like action.... really fun, really fluid. But TF2's graphics dont come close to what we see in Destiny... its not even subjectively debatable. Lol. So, TF2 made those trade offs which are totally acceptable in a multiplayer game, but there is NO WAY that you'd spend nearly as much time in a "shared open world" created by Respawn if it matched the lower texture/design quality of TF2. I'm not gonna pretend that i know what it takes to create a world as pretty as destiny's world, but i know there's only a couple of studios that could pull it off, and those studios are almost all owned by Sony. So, untill Bungie gets bought by Sony, the trade off seems fair to me. BUT... Not sure i like the new "cartoonish" look of the NPCs in D2, though.... so we'll have to see where these graphics are really going before we let this design decision pass.
