This is something Bungie has not done particularly well. They improved it with TTK, but generally speaking, it's still bad. Strikes and missions should give you a sample of the raid mechanics so that people can actually practice.
If you think of this as a sports analogy: the only place to practice is during the game.

Yeah, I agree with you. Running the sword in CE is important. It's easy too run the shield in VoG (which you can now practice in a strike) but if you don't have anyone really good at using the sword, your raid team is in trouble! I've been trying to practice in the story mission "Sword of Crota" to get the timing down, but it doesn't translate very well. I still almost always end up missing a swing.

The sisters' fight too in KF, the jumps, comes to mind as something they don't allow practice for. I suppose you can practice sword use in Oryx's court with tier 3 tokens during the week that mini Crota boss appears. However, good luck finding others to do that now.
