Do you think Guardians being able to revive takes away some of the impact of their death?

I'm mean from a Story perspective. I don't know why but this has always bothered me. Don't get me wrong, Guardians are super cool but when you know that even if they die they'll just come back makes them feel a little less cool in my eyes. I feel like it takes away the sense of danger when they fight. When a guardian dies permanently I'm just thinking to myself "How did you, an immortal, manage to -blam!- up so badly to the point where you died permanently?". I'm not saying you won't get the feels from their death, I'm just saying that having their ghost be able to revive them in most situation dulls their death a bit. Do give your reasoning for you choice. I would love to see some other perspective on this topic :) Edit: It seems most of you disagree, and provide some very interesting points. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

  • It's in fact one of my favorite plot devices in a video game, rather then magically respawning there is a plot mechanic to bring you back tied into the lore. Not only that but death and revival is a part of a gaurdians strategy, wether it's in the lore where a Titan purposefully died to then be revived and use a fist of havoc, or even ingame where a warlock charges out into battle dies and waits for an opportunity to self rez for an advantage.

  • Their ghost has to die in order for them to die die

  • It seems it is more of the eye of the beholder. Instead of "how bad did they screw up to die permanently" one could think "what terrible atrocity did they face to lose their life?"

  • Death to a guardian must be like when Dr. Strange was on a time loop with Dormammu, (Recent Movie) dying in different ways, but still coming back with a corrected time frame and perspective of the outcome. Imho, if a guardian was already dead, why should he even care to fight for a cause that will not benefit the dead(which we already "were)? After everything is all set and done, the Traveler will awake and we'll all end in the same place Ghost found us in; a fish tank. If you think about it, guardian's are nothing more but fourth dimensional projections of their own cognitive existence(That's why guardians need a certain ghost to survive. The light, is the power source, and the guardian is a program of ghost). In the first mission there is somewhat evidence of this. Ghost dissolving us to enter the ship by the old hanger is one, then when ghost saves us from getting blown to bits by Oryx when we try and infiltrate the Dreadnaut is another. I don't think Guardians care to much if they live or die. They have nothing to lose..

Guardians die permanently. But only when something was capable of draining all their light, and destroying their ghost. This is an astounding feat for our enemies. Effectively, it's like us going into a hive throne to kill a God. If anything, it adds weight to their death. When a guardian like pahanin, Galadia, or thalor dies, it means they were destroyed completely. They weren't just overwhelmed, or incapacitated. They were eradicated. It's similar to Decapitating an immortal. Not an easy feat. But when completed, it reminds the others that they still have limitations

You'll never know if you don't go You'll never shine if you don't glow Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid And all that glitters is gold Only shooting stars break the mold It's a cool place and they say it gets colder You're bundled up now, wait till you get older But the meteor men beg to differ Judging by the hole in the satellite picture The ice we skate is getting pretty thin The water's getting warm so you might as well swim My world's on fire, how about yours? That's the way I like it and I never get bored Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid All that glitters is gold Only shooting stars break the mold Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show, on get paid And all that glitters is gold Only shooting stars Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas? I need to get myself away from this place I said yep what a concept I could use a little fuel myself And we could all use a little change Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running Didn't make sense not to live for fun Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb So much to do, so much to see So what's wrong with taking the back streets? • Actually I think it does the opposite. Guardians can still die permanently, and when that happens, it gives more impact to the death; this idea that an 'unkillable' soldier actually died.

            • Actually, on the contrary, the fact that Guardians have some form of immortality makes it an even bigger deal when they finally die for real. To kill a Guardian takes quite a considerable amount of effort. All dead Guardians went through some kind of traumatic event. Even Citan's death at Felwinter's hands was pretty shocking.

                • I think it gives the final death more impact. When you find a dead ghost, and it sparks to life for a brief second, tries to fly, then dies permanently as it's light is extinguished, it really is tragic. It might not fully come across in the game itself, but I guess you could compare it to a 5000 year old tree getting cut down, or perhaps a tortoise that's hundreds of years old being killed. The loss of all that history after everything it's been through in my opinion, is sadder than say, a 10 year old tree getting cut down. Especially knowing that in the case of some ghosts, it's mission to find a guardian went unfulfilled and it died knowing that it failed in it's one purpose after trying for so long... it's very sad to me.

                  • I think dying in this game needs to have a bigger impact on game play. Add in a stacking debuff to nightfall and heroic playlists (NF being far more severe, I'd prefer the old school "return to orbit" bit) Maybe an accumulative revive timer (Death Counters). A penalty of sorts for dying. 1 death: 15 sec cool down. 2: 20 sec 3: 30 sec 4: 45 sec 5: 55 sec Etc Ect... (Team wipe resets death counter) I think this would force people to think more and plan ahead instead of just spraying as many bullets as they can.

It would be a very short video game if there were no revives/respawns

                      • I do admit, it takes some of the badass out. Master Chief never died. He fought like a -blam!-ing champ. Guardians? They're wiped out by things as simple as falling 10 feet onto a rock.

                        • well i mean salidin, says it in a stupid but clever way "i didn't know anyone with the light could die until they did" in a way we can die, wether the ghost revives us or not wont take away from the simple fact that we are a being of light and are super strong, heck even warlocks return form death, and in that case it adds something to death, life continues regardless of if we die, other beings of the light continue the fight, if anything we become a legacy. Killing a hive god, a hive king, a being able to destroy time, the fallen spider, becoming an iron lord, becoming an ascendent being.
