In the lore, we are the legendary guardian that leads others to defeat the great monstrosities of the darkness.
It's not a case of "I killed Oryx today, buddy killed oryx tomorrow." It's that you completed the task, you are legend. The other guardians were there for the ride...
"Become legend" it's the story of the guardian in the lore, not who the player is.

Boring! Why the hell are we treating it like a single player storyline when it's so obviously a Multiplayer Game! so what I'm legend because I paid 100 bucks for a disc? nuh uh, bring destiny 2 into a full universe where thousands of Guardians explore Multiple avenues of progression Unlimited by some singleplayer experience. what's that you say? you LIKE the single player Experience? well guess what, It isn't going anywhere, you can have That too, you take one path, I take another. He takes one, she takes one. Hell that group over there did it together!

Can't be done, would be amazing... it until a game evolves on its own, it can't be done. Skyrim's radiant world holds promise that it could be a thing but until the game generates its own designs from mobs to descendants...it's a long way away indeed.
