Lyrics that tell a story

Not every song has a purpose or unique meaning. Even fewer tell a story. Whether they represent a concept or theme or simply just tell a story, some of my favorite songs are songs that tell a story. To me it shows the skill of songwriter to write about more than just money, sex, partying, and drugs (although these topics can tell a good story). Here are some examples: The Cop - House of Heroes
Some men do it 'cause it pays the bills, Others want to save the world. Me myself, I never was a hero though. Joined the force like my daddy did. Figured I'd marry young, But the things I've seen made me take a different road. 'Til you've been in the dark you might never feel it. 'Til you've been in the dark you might think you're guaranteed But your life can leave, With a spark. The rain falls on the blessed ones and the damned. Met my girl about a year ago, Knew that I'd found a home, Laughed so much I felt like a kid again Since that day it's hard to do the job, It's hard to know what I've known, So much pain, and so few innocent. 'Til you've been in the dark you might never question, 'Til you've been in the dark you might think you're quarantined, Yeah, but nothing's free And your love can leave, In the dark. The rain falls on the blessed ones, The rain falls on the damned, And you've changed my mind, I love you more, Than I love myself, And I'm scared to death, That you love me less
Ghost - House of Heroes
Fell in love in high school With a brown haired, green eyed girl I walked her home most everyday Held her hand, I held the world We made our plan to run away I couldn't wait to share her life We started countin down the days She couldn't wait to be my wife I got a job and bought a car I turned 18 that spring By summer had my own place And I bought my baby's ring Fell in with the wrong crowd Breakin laws, I broke her heart By autumn was in handcuffs Baby's cryin out in her front yard And that's what hurt the most I saw it in her green eyes She had seen a ghost My mama saw me every week Tried her hardest not to cry She told me that she loved me Disappointment in her eyes I said, "Mama, I love you too And I'm gonna make you proud one day" A month before I got out They told me mama passed away And that's what hurt the most I saw it in her eyes, her son was a ghost I hate this life I chose Long before she died her son was a ghost Now I got my freedom But it feels like emptiness In front of the apartment Where your sister says you live And there's another man, who fills my empty shoes And darlin you don't see me But you know that I see you, I drift off... I'm gonna fade away Beyond the city lights I'm gonna fade away Through the empty night I'm gonna fade away Drifting out your life I wanna fade away Through the empty night
The Gambler - fun.
Slow down, we've got time left to be lazy All the kids have bloomed from babies into flowers in our eyes We've got fifty good years left to spend out in the garden I don't care to beg your pardon, we should live until we die We were barely eighteen when we crossed collective hearts It was cold, but it got warm when you barely crossed my eye And then you turned, put out your hand, and you asked me to dance I knew nothing of romance, but it was love at second sight I swear when I grow up I won't just buy you a rose I will buy the flower shop, and you will never be lonely For even if the sun stops waking up over the fields I will not leave, I will not leave 'til it's our time So just take my hand, you know that I will never leave your side It was the winter of '86, all the fields had frozen over So we moved to Arizona to save our only son And now he's turned into a man, though he thinks just like his mother He believes we're all just lovers, he sees hope in everyone And even though she moved away, we always get calls from our daughter She has eyes just like her father's, they are blue when skies are gray And just like him she never stops, never takes the day for granted Works for everything that's handed to her, never once complains You think that I nearly lost you when the doctors tried to take you away Like the night you took my hand beside the fire thirty years ago to this day, You swore you'd be here 'til we decide that it's our time But it's not time, you never quit in all your life So just take my hand, you know that I will never leave your side You're the love of my life, you know that I will never leave your side You come home from work, and you kiss me on the eye You curse the dog, you say that I should never feed them what is ours So we move out to the garden, look at everything we've grown And the kids are coming home so I'll set the table; you can make the fire
Angels In Top Hats - House of Heroes
I waited for you, watching you sleep machines were breathing for you. Dolled up in white, wrapped in tubes You wore them so gracefully Angels and demons were fighting for you Your maidens do your bidding If you wake, mine will be The first eyes you see Oh, hey Hopeless cathedrals, blankets and needles Oh, hey Angels in top hats, and cups full of blood Everything happened so fast I can't recall the road, the rain The bag, the blood, the splash Tell me everything's fine, tell me that she's alright But she's not, she's not I see you now only in pieces, in pieces Janie, can you hear my prayers hit the ceiling? And can you tell me if my words have meaning? Can you tell me what my hope is to look like? Hey, you'll never find another Hey, hey, you'll never find another end Hey, hey, you'll never find another Hey, hey, hey, you'll never find another Hopeless cathedrals, blankets and needles Angels in top hats, cups full of blood Dreams are for dreaming, buckets for bleeding Eyes are for seeing, but you'll still be sleeping
By Your Side - House of Heroes
Born on the plains, a farmer's sons and brothers the same, raised on promises... we'd stay that way. As boys we believed, summers at the sea we were free to become men of good will... side by side. And we were children then, foot prints in the sand And where the ocean bends, we made our promises... He knows. Duty soon called, 1943 we enrolled, together we would be our family's pride... And we were soldiers then, our bodies in the sand And like that sand through our hands, go our grandest plans. And just to see your face for one moment, I'd cross the ocean again, the end... is not the end. And I'll be by your side, on the other side And I'll be by your side, on the other side And through the cloud of death, we find our way back home. And though I hold your hand, all must go alone. And when you see the face of our Maker, you don't have to be ashamed, He knows the promises we made. And I'll be by your side, on the other side.
Let's see what OffTopic can come up with.

The Devil Went Down to Georgia Well the Devil went down to Georgia He was lookin' for a soul to steal He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind And he was willin' to make a deal When he came across this young man Sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot And the Devil jumped up on a hickory stump And said, "Boy, let me tell you what" "You probably didn't know it But I'm a fiddle player too And if you care to take a dare I'll just make a bet with you" "Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy But give the Devil his due I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul I think I'm better than you" The boy said, "My name's Johnny And it might be a sin But I'm gonna take your bet, you're gonna regret I'm the best there's ever been" Johnny you rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard 'Cause hell's broke loose in Georgia and the Devil deals the cards And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold But if you lose the Devil gets your soul The Devil opened up his case And he said, "I'll start this show" And fire flew from his fingertips As he rosined up his bow And then he pulled his bow across the strings And it made an evil hiss And a band of demons joined in And it sounded something like this When the Devil finished Johnny said, "Well you're pretty good old son But you just sit down in that chair right there I'm gonna show you how this stuff's done" Fire on the mountain, run boys, run The Devil's in the House of the Rising Sun Chicken in the bread pan pickin' at dough Granny does your dog bite? No child, no Well that ol' Devil bowed his head Because he knew that he'd been beat And he laid that golden fiddle Down on the ground at Johnny's feet Johnny said, "Devil, just come on back If you ever wanna try again I done told you once you son of a bitch I'm the best there's ever been" He played, 'Fire on the Mountain', run boys, run The Devil's in the House of the Rising Sun Chicken in the bread pan pickin' at dough Granny does your dog bite? No child, no

  • Leaves are falling all around, It's time I was on my way. Thanks to you, I'm much obliged for such a pleasant stay. But now it's time for me to go. The autumn moon lights my way. For now I smell the rain, and with it pain, and it's headed my way. Sometimes I grow so tired, but I know I've got one thing I got to do... Ramble On, And now's the time, the time is now, to sing my song. I'm goin' 'round the world, I got to find my girl, on my way. I've been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On, Gotta find the queen of all my dreams. Got no time to for spreadin' roots, The time has come to be gone. And to' our health we drank a thousand times, it's time to Ramble On. Ramble On, And now's the time, the time is now, to sing my song. I'm goin' 'round the world, I got to find my girl, on my way. I've been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On, Gotta find the queen of all my dreams. Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear. How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air. T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair. But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her....yeah. Ramble On, And now's the time, the time is now, to sing my song. I'm goin' 'round the world, I got to find my girl, on my way. I've been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On, Gotta find the queen of all my dreams. Gonna ramble on, sing my song. Gotta keep-a-searchin' for my baby... Gonna work my way, round the world. I can't stop this feelin' in my heart Gotta keep searchin' for my baby. I can't find my bluebird!

WRLD - Little Too Late Hey Do you remember me? I'm the girl whose heart you stole I don't want it back, please You can keep it My mind's made up on who I want holding it You're a little too close But too far away It's much too early Or it's far too late Maybe I'm too old now Or just afraid That you'll walk away Just a glance Was all it took for me to fall But you don't even know that you Were looking at me, and when you smile Smile with your eyes Eyes that pass right over me Like I'm as out of place as I feel to be You're a little too close But too far away It's much too early Or it's far too late Maybe I'm too old now Or just afraid That you'll walk away You're across the room from me But it's an ocean wide And the current's pulling us Dragging me aside Oh you're a constellation And I'm just a star Blinking in the universe But you'll never notice me at all When you're gone, I don't know what to say And when you're with me I can't say anything anyway So just believe me Even if the words don't come out They're here inside my head Stuck inside my mouth

  • ushes Of Love" -How did my father die? 49 times, we fought that beast. Your old man and me. It had a chicken head with duck feet, With a Woman's face too. -Aw, that's rad! And it was waiting in the bushes for us, Then it ripped off your dad's face. He was screaming something awful. In fact there was this huge mess, And I had to change the floors. -The floors? You see, his blood, it drained into the boards, And I had to change 'em. But we all got a Chicken-Duck-Woman thing, Waiting for us. Every day I worry all day. About what's waiting in the bushes of love. Cause something's waiting in the bushes for us. Something's waiting in the bushes of love. Every day I worry all day. About what's waiting in the bushes of love. Something's waiting in the bushes for us. Something's waiting in the bushes of love. -Yo, Never knew My dad He didn't Care about me. Dead horizon, Is all my macro-binoculars see. Moisture-Farming All my life And not a drop spilt. My aunt and uncle, double suns, And sippin' blue milk. My aunt and uncle, double suns, I'm sick of blue milk. But then a desert hobo came and told me, -We all got Chicken-Duck-Woman thing, Waiting for us. Every day I worry all day. Yeah, She'd probably love to Honky tonk. (She'd probably love to Honky tonk.) That's what I said. I used to ride, Across the desert. You know, I used to glide, On my speeder. Pray that I don't find, What I don't wanna find. Waitin' for me 'round the corner, Oh no, no. I used to ride, Across the desert. You know, I used to glide, On my speeder. Pray that I don't find any more, -Crispy bodies by the door. 49 times, yeah it was 49 times. And now it might be waiting for you. Could be hiding behind that scrap pile. -That's just a big cow. • Deathbed, Relient K:
"Deathbed" I can smell the death on the sheets Covering me I can't believe this is the end But this is my deathbed I lie here alone If I close my eyes tonight I know I'll be home The year was nineteen forty one I was eight years old and Far far too young To know that the stories Of battles and glory Was a tale a kind mother Made up for her son You see Dad was a traveling preacher Teaching the words of the Teacher But mother had sworn Went off to the war And died there with honor Somewhere on a beach there But he left once to never return Which taught me that I should unlearn Whatever I thought a father should be I abandoned that thought Like he abandoned me By forty seven I was fourteen I'd acquired a taste for liquor and nicotine I smoked until I threw up Yet I still lit 'em up for thirty more years Like a machine So right there you have it That one filthy habit Is what got me where I am today I can smell the death on the sheets Covering me I can't believe this is the end I can hear those sad memories Still haunting me So many things I'd do again But this is my deathbed I lie here alone If I close my eyes tonight I know I'll be home I got married on my twenty first Eight months before my wife would give birth It's easier to be sure you love someone When her father inquires with the barrel of a gun The union was far from harmonious No two people could have been more alone than us The years would go by and she'd love someone else And I realized I hadn't been loved yet myself From there it's your typical spiel Yeah if life was a highway I was drunk at the wheel I was helping the loose ends All fall apart Yeah I swear I was destined to fail And fail from the start I bowled about six times a week The bottle of Beam kept the memories from me Our marriage had taken a seven-ten split Along with my pride the ex-wife took the kids I can smell the death on the sheets Covering me I can't believe this is the end I can hear those sad memories Still haunting me So many things I'd do again But this is my deathbed I lie here alone If I close my eyes tonight I know I'll be home I was so scared of Jesus But He sought me out Like the cancer in my lungs It's killing me now And I've given up hope On the days I have left But I cling to the hope Of my life in the next Then Jesus showed up Said "Before we go" "I thought that we might reminisce" "See one night in your life" "When you turned out the light" "You asked for and prayed for my forgiveness" You cried wolf The tears they soaked your fur The blood dripped from your fangs You said, "What have I done?" You loved that lamb With every sinful bone And there you wept alone Your heart was so contrite You said, "Jesus, please forgive me of my crimes Sanctify this withered heart of mine Stay with me until my life is through And on that day please take me home with you" I can smell the death on the sheets Covering me I can't believe this is the end I can hear You whisper to me, "It's time to leave You'll never be lonely again" But this was my deathbed I died there alone When I closed my eyes tonight You carried me home
• One I can’t remember anything Can’t tell if this is true or dream Deep down inside I feel to scream This terrible silence stops me Now that the war is through with me I’m waking up, I cannot see That there’s not much left of me Nothing is real but pain now Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please, God, wake me Back in the womb it’s much too real In pumps life that I must feel But can’t look forward to reveal Look to the time when I’ll live Fed through the tube that sticks in me Just like a wartime novelty Tied to machines that make me be Cut this life off from me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please, God, wake me Now the world is gone, I’m just one Oh God, help me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please, God, help me Darkness Imprisoning me All that I see Absolute horror I cannot live I cannot die Trapped in myself Body my holding cell Landmine Has taken my sight Taken my speech Taken my hearing Taken my arms Taken my legs Taken my soul Left me with life in hell [Film Clip attached if you can't work out the story]

Fresh prince of bel air because it does tell a story Now, this is a story all about how My life got flipped-turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute Just sit right there I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air In west Philadelphia born and raised On the playground was where I spent most of my days Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school When a couple of guys who were up to no good Started making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my mom got scared She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air' I begged and pleaded with her day after day But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket. I put my Walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'. First class, yo this is bad Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass. Is this what the people of Bel-Air living like? Hmm this might be alright. But wait I hear they're prissy, bourgeois, all that Is this the type of place that they just send this cool cat? I don't think so I'll see when I get there I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air Well, the plane landed and when I came out There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out I ain't trying to get arrested yet I just got here I sprang with the quickness like lightning, disappeared I whistled for a cab and when it came near The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror If anything I could say that this cab was rare But I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo, home to Bel-Air' I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo home smell ya later' I looked at my kingdom I was finally there To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel-Air

Slick Rick Slick Ricks verse starting at 2:30 exemplifies how he is one of the best story tellers of all time in hip-hop. I mean I'm sure everyone remembers Children's story, so that's why I'm posting this. • Iron Maiden's songs often tell a story, like "The Trooper", "Paschendale", "The Number of the Beast", "Flight of Icarus", list goes on.

                    • I'm a dreamer But it's hard to sleep when your head's not in it I've been restless Cause you disappeared and that's all that's missing The Earth is loose under my shoes There's an angel And he's shaped like you, and I thought I knew him There's a window And it's dark inside, but the light was in it This can't be love if it hurts so much I need to let go I will survive and be the one who's stronger I will not beg you to stay I will move on and you should know I mean it Wild horses run in me I remember How we danced so close, I would stand on your feet And the phone calls That would last all night, they were lifeboats to me Our fading scars just shooting stars They're here, then go I will survive and be the one who's stronger I will not beg you to stay I will move on and you should know I mean it Wild horses run in me Our human hearts forget how strong they are And they get lost along the way, hey It's not giving up, it's letting go And moving to a better place I will survive and be the one who's stronger I will not beg you to stay I will move on and you should know I mean it Wild horses run in me I will survive and be the one who's stronger I will not beg you to stay I will move on and you should know I mean it Wild horses run in me

I saw the world spin beneath you And scatter like ice from the spoon that was your womb Comin' down the world turned over And angels fall without you there And I go on as you get colder Or are you someone's prayer? You know the lies they always told you And the love you never knew What's the things they never showed you That swallow the light from the sun inside your room, yeah Comin' down the world turned over And angels fall without you there And I go on as you get colder Always someone there And there's no time left for losin' When you stand they fall, yeah Comin' down the world turned over And angels fall without you there And I go on as you get colder All because I'm Comin' down the years turn over And angels fall without you there And I'll go on and I'll lead you home and All because I'm All because I'm And I'll become What you became to me
The song is about watching a loved one struggle with a heroin addiction.
