Restaurant Experiences and Pretension

Give me an example of pretentiousness in a restaurant which rubbed you the wrong way? What sorts of dining practices do you feel are antiquated? Do you like knowing where your food comes from or hearing the restaurateur's unique names for basic dishes? I recently went to a restaurant for lunch which emphasized the restaurant's focus on Northern Italian cuisine. The decor made attempts to match the food. The server told me in detail the peculiarities of each dish, and gave strong suggestions. I enjoyed the meal, but the experience felt cheap (not the bill, of course. 4 dollars for a little bottle of San Pellegrino?). Perhaps the most important question: do you ever consider what people think of you when you turn into a McDonald's and order a Big Mac instead of a charcuterie board at a quiet bistro? Is it snobbish to turn your nose up at white Zinfandel? What are your thoughts on the modern restaurant? Is it pretentious?

  • Another thought came to me. What do you think when someone corrects your pronunciation of, say, a French dish like Bouillabaisse? Do you ever consciously say the name of a food in an accent? Like mozzarella with a long "o" and a trilled "r"? Do your companions say anything about it if you do?
