There will never be as amazing of an FPS experience as Quake once QuakeWorld client hit the scene.
Quake MP via QuakeWorld stayed alive all the way into 2005. If I'm not mistaken there's actually been a QW rebirth.
QWTF was a phenomenonal competitive experience, all the while balancing multiple classes. QWDM was insanity when you played against players who understood map control. QWCA made for some of the flashiest fights I've ever seen in competitive FPS.
Gone are the days of rocket jumping, rocket juggling your enemy, shafting the enemy into the sky box, and mobility based of skill rather than automatic clambering.
The persuit of "realistic" FPS has ruined FPS.

And yet you get shafted at any FPS by the looks of your stats on destiny tracker and its affiliates (halo tracker, battlefield tracker etc.) It seems your statement doesn't hold any water. How sad :(
