Moderation needs an upgrade

After today's "someone call the FBI" incident in #OffTopic, some flaws in moderation were finally exposed badly enough that I decided to make a post about it. What can we do to make moderation here better? My thoughts: We need better community involvement in moderation, make reports from older accounts have more weight against comments so they disappear quickly as they await ninja justice. We need sticky threads with rules in every forum. I can set a timer, go into #Destiny or the Balancing section of #Feedback, and find someone calling another user some derogatory name in less than 30 seconds, any time of the day. Enforce a wanted list. This is especially important for combating porn posters who do it for the sake of being known by their name. We have several of those right now that feast on the reputation they have gained from using the same account. Some simple IP checking could be used to at least partially verify it's the same person behind each account. The odds of two people at the same university both creating an account with the same username are very slim. Warn people who intentionally bump comments that violate the CoC. Generally crack down on stuff. Maybe get more ninjas, however the weak spots in ninja presence seem to occur during times of the day when they are at work, so I am unsure of whether or not adding more would help if they all have lives of some sort.

I think they need to bring in new blood, but on top of that split the moderation team up on duties. It would be beneficial to have half of the moderators doing what they currently do - handle the report queue and deal with posts that pop up in that. The second crew would be a "patrol" going about the forums and getting posts when they can. It may be a tad inefficient because it depends on stumbling across a post that violates the CoC, but it can deal with posts quicker too. Edit: Also, though it may be a bit difficult and I don't know how diverse the moderation team is, I'd like to see more moderators who live around the globe, not just the U.S. This would allow more periods of time to be covered.

  • I agree this has gotten out of hand. When you reach a point where the content on the site is not only bad for Bungie's image, but may incur legal action, you know change is in order. Admittedly, we've come a long way from the "moderate yourselves" policy, but clearly we need to take a few more steps.

  • Wasn't aware of "Call the FBI" incident. Maybe Bungie needs a new moderator/ninja faction... I rarely go to Offtopic anymore, and I assume that is where most of the offenses take place. There is obviously a large crowd of users who haven't reached puberty yet and that could explain the high volume of NSFW posts. I like Ragnarok's idea of choosing moderators in diversified regions of the world, a better way to have around the clock presence. I would imagine there are "shifts" established for the moderators/ninjas? Some kind of sign up schedule? Otherwise it is obvious there would be long periods without supervision, as most people do have lives...

Mute(tm) is a failed feature. It brought less moderation with the idea that users would just mute what they don't want to see. Problem is, new users get exposed to the junk and think "I probably never want to return again". It's better to remove content for everyone, not just those who choose to mute. A forum is like an attraction. First impressions are arguably the most important for creating long term, healthy users who don't just spam edgy comments. If there is a pile of trash in the line for entering the ride, only those with low standards will give it a shot. For example, LFG plagued this forum for months. No action was taken for a long time, and my mute list would be endless if I "self-moderated" the spam I saw. Does anyone want to constantly mute? No, so many tags died under the wave of misinformation. Was a sticky put up? No. Were there locked threads to show "Hey! This stuff isn't cool, don't you post an LFG thread!!". No, because it's a "badge for trolls" (honestly the stickies threads would be so much better if they could just be locked!). Did Bungie make a freaking news article informing people of the correct places to post? No. Truth is, the solutions are right in front of our faces and have been since b.old. All the features we need we had years ago. It's just waaaaaaaay at the bottom of the list under incorporating status updates. Probably in the dusty bin where titles sit right now. There needs to be more mods as well. I'm not sure what Bungie is waiting for. I guess there aren't anymore loyal fans they trust? There has to be someone they can promote..more mods won't hurt, it will only help! And on our part. We can report. And report. And report some more. Honestly I spend a lot of time on the App but I underutilize the report feature. All in all, the forums are getting better. But the speed could be a little faster....

    • Every day that inaction is taken, it gets worse. The mods are good people, but they have jobs and lives they need to prioritize first. For distinctly long periods of time, there is no such thing as moderation. That needs to change.
