Destiny, your "quests" will always suck!

Your "quests" will always be merely shoot things and travel to the tower. I would be down with your searching steps on patrols, but those never have new, mysterious, or, most importantly, DANGEROUS (feeling) locations. Its only a room we never paid attention to before. Long story short, this update about quests from Luke Smith made me smile. I smile because it is such a wasted effort. You built a morpg around fps. Haha good luck ever having any true variety. Ultimately it all comes down to "how many times do I feel like shooting the same guy over and over again?" (Side note) there will never be any true danger or risk in destiny. Therefore, there will never be anything as truly rewarding as it could be. Edit 1: people mention other mmo's such as WoW. WoW has more to offer in that enemies you dispatch many times have unique drops and drop rates that have their own different values. Also, it is much more engaging because there is the possibility of death and resulting loss of gear. Not just a stupid chechpoint..

  • What I find funny, is the picture they provided about "Quests", show how awful their quests really are. Shoot this enemy Talk to Petra Kill this enemy Talk to Variks Talk to Petra Talk to Variks Hunt down this new enemy Talk to Petra Why can't I talk to this b!tch over the radio when she was following me and narrating missions to me? Why do I need to fly to the reef to see her? Not to mention the "quest" items, are just showing the steps we already do. I can't only imagine the Last Array quest: Visit Cosmodrome - check Drive to Last Array - check Kill enemies - Check Watch cutscene that we can't skip because it's in the Vanilla version of Destiny - check Listen to Dinklebot - check Wait for the 30 second countdown instead of leaving to orbit early and wasting 45 seconds of your life - check

    • Really we are talking about attention to detail, about care for the game. I hate to always refer to the Witcher 3 cause this is definitely not that, however i feel like they can definitely learn from it because it could possibly be the best rpg ever made. Simple quests in that game that do not even really impact main story are well thought out they have great attention to detail. Its: Go to location , learn of a problem, have meaningful conversation with NPC/ quest giver go to location of issue gather info and make a plan to kill/ rid the issue, Prepare to execute plan and kill enemy/issue obtain useful gear, knowledge, item, return to Quest Guest Giver see, get another item or money and see small animation and have another conversation about the good of what you have just done and how it impacts the world. In the quest you feel frightened of the unknown, you don't know what is out there it may be something you have never seen before or are not equipped to handle you could die and there are consequences that impact others and your self based on how you handle the situation. One quest that just involves finding manuscripts had me travel across a content, sail to small separate islands and track the actions and footsteps of a character who had died long before the game began, there were puzzles there were enemies unique to the quest and areas there were specific effects in those unique areas, there were hidden items and treasure. No this not The witcher 3, this version of Destiny will never be that but the next one can be, we know its possible, we know a game can have incredible graphics, immersive, engaging story, balanced economics, tight combat, expansive open world full of npcs other players and quests that draw the player in and give them a sense of value and accomplishment were there are chances for great gain and loss. A game begging to be explored simply because it is too good to ignore, to not see what is behind every corner, too beautiful to not see every sight. True most MMOS do not have deep compelling quests but why would we limit our selves by comparing what Destiny CAN BE to what most games ARE, instead lets compare it to what it to what it MIGHT BE, to the future. Maybe at the time this was not possible for destiny( it definitely was) but now with the power of new gen consoles and the incredible resources Bungie has( more then most studios especially for this project) it is 100% possible to accomplish this. Doing so would show Bungie is dedicated to their fans, that they still want to be the studio leading the Video Game industry into the future, this would be that game we wouldn't complain (as much) about paying for, because we would have value for our dollars. Truly I want to see this franchise be the best ever because I don't know if another studio can accomplish it the way Bungie has the potential to. I love video games I always have but seeing a studio that I once held in high esteem push out a product that is far below what they are capable of is disappointing, seeing them ask for more money without delivering real quality is upsetting and watching them ignore (most) the complaints and and through out ( most ) the suggestions of their fans is heart breaking. The studio may create the game but the fans drive it, remember who send the pay check, remember who you do this for , remember what you made us feel, the wonder, the excitement, the anticipation, Brotherhood/Sisterhood, Joy and satisfaction. Bring it back! Bring life and integrity back to our industry. I thoroughly apologize for the ranting, I am just depressed by the scene of the industry today and I firmly believe Bungie has the power to take the Industry in the direction that it deserves, that it needs to go.

          • They aren't even "Quests". It's just the same old Bounties that are now shown differently (with progress bars!!!) in the Menu screens, and a HUD display to show your progress. There's still nothing about them that screams "QUEST!!!!", nor even alludes to it to be honest... just the same old bounties, again, and again, and again... oh by the Gods... enough already, Bungie. This reskinned bullshit but trying to describe it as a completely different type of activity is about as transparent as it gets. It's bullshit and you're not fooling anyone. If Acti$hit/Bungie would swallow their pride and ask for help from the Community (or at least from development companies who actually know what they're doing when creating/managing an MMO/RPG...), this game might have been great. As it is, it's just shallow, reskinned crap that is obviously an artificially induced grind for the sake of grinding, and only currently being used to milk your Gamers as ATM machines (Luke Smith even said so!!! :D). There's no Quests coming in The Taken Wallet. After that "reveal" last week, I'm positively convinced the Bungie has no idea what a Quest even is...

              I haven't played WoW in years but loss of gear? Wtf are you smoking? You never lost gear from death...just an annoying run back to your corpse as a ghost. If a game made that hardcore choice to lose gear upon death it would be a very small group of people that would play. Most people are casual or just a notch above that. So if Destiny were to take that route it more than likely have to be something along the lines of D3 hardcore mode which would separate you from the casuals. Edit: Also, all quests in just about every MMO/RPG is the same thing. Different setting same quest. Kill x amount of this monster, collect x amount of this item, etc. so complaining about something like that is a moot point. It's nothing new and it's always been that way...sure they could try to be original but hey, you're just complaining so unless you have better ideas to give them then you're not really doing any better than them on this one.

              • I don't want to agree with you...but I do. How the FAQ can you call this stupid Archon thing a 'quest?' It's literally 'pick up the bounty, go to the area, shotgun the dude a couple times, turn in the bounty.' That's retarded. Seriously. Why was that even implemented into the dlc?

                  Agreed most of the content is just rehashed over and over again. in HoW you go back and forth to the reef to hold X(Square) for a few seconds and then you fly back to the same planet you were literally just on! It served no narrative purpose other than to give a extremely cheap illusion of a longer game. This was done with no logical purpose in the writing either, its not like we acquired anything we had to take back to Petra. We were on comms the whole time she could have just told us on comms to go to the next spot. Instead we have this idea where our guardians travel millions of (fictional) miles for a 5 second conversation and then are sent directly back to where they just were. They could have made this more engaging by having to go through the main open world for one spot to another but they failed on that. Take few notes from the Witcher 3 (yes I am aware they are completely different games) and its open expansive world, it made the world feel alive and persistent if there was a mission to be done in an area of the map, simply walking there would activate it there was no jarring load screen ( ship floating in orbit) to pull you out of the experience. Use the power of the new gen consoles and make this happen in your next game. CD Project Red has already proved that making a game that beautiful, expansive, long, challenging and compelling is possible on the hardware you are already using. If you want to be a premier game studio again one that deserves the awards and more importantly the money you are asking for make that game. I am already willing to purchase any DLC that is dropped for the Witcher 3 because that game is worth it that game is beautiful its compelling. Lets just be honest about what we want, We want the best game, you can make that game , you want money and we can give it to you. Now that we understand each other make it happen.

                  • You do know alot of mmos have the same kind of quest cycle, you find some things kill them, or you find things kill them and take something from them and then report back to the area you got the quest from.

                        • Maybe you should stick to other rpgs that have specific spawn points for enemies, only youre in third person instead. 98% of games have spawning locations on repeat. The only games i can think of that change everytime are procedurally generated - Left 4 Dead, No mans Sky and a handful of brutal indies. If they manage to rotate spawning locations or offer variety in any way during patrols, it would help exponentially. The fact that you admitted purposefully leaving negative comments below says alot. Your attitude wont help anything get done. Perhaps yoi should make a suggestion in the feedback forum instead of saying their efforts are pointless.

                          • If you want to dumb it down like that then every game ever has sucked. "Talk to a dude, stab a few enemies, return to dude" "talk to a lady, cast a spell on some enemies, raturn to lady" Sounds like it's not the quest itself that you have concerns about but the way everything works around the quest. In vanilla wow I killed the same things over and over WAY more than Destiny.

                                  • It would be nice to have a higher risk system. Right now the scariest thing we have is nightfall, which is rarely a challenge... Or having to go to bed after several hours of fighting skills. XD I would gladly risk losing gear during high level activities, or some amount of experience. Wager games in crucible. Anything really! Or challenge modes with friends, complete x in x amount of time, or first to x wins... SPARROW RACES for glimmer... Have weapon parts and small things be the rewards.

                                    • I feel this way about patrol. Patrol is pretty boring and there never seems to be a threat. It would nice is more areas like "The blast" where legitimate threats like the devil walker roam. That could have been a legitimate cool place for some patrolling if it were just a tad larger.

                                        Destiny is one of those games that I recognize has lazy development and glaring issues that need to be addressed yet I hopelessly wait for some miraculous change because I see a lot of potential. #nocommas

                                            • hey, there is a reason destiny got 6/10 ratings.. im willing to bet a lot of money the version of destiny in early 2013 was something else entirely.. cosmodrome was 5 to 10x's larger, if you could see it, you could go there, and even the weapon upgrade trees were more immersive.. not to mention hand cannons were special weapons... why does that make so much sense right now?
