Does Gun Control Work?

More guns, more problems. Right? Take away guns, all it does is remove a medium. For example, in Soviet Russia a nation-wide ban on guns was issued. It was successful by removing gun violence and ownership. However, violent crimes still came close or equaled to the gun-saturated United States at the time because people simply used other weapons. In the United States, Chicago is also a prime example. Since the implementation of gun control laws, the city hasn't drastically changed gun ownership and still remains one of the most dangerous cities in America. Another point I felt is worth mentioning are the Columbine and Virginia Tech shooters. The teenagers at Columbine managed to get weapons from a woman who bought it for them, and Seung-Hui Cho passed a mental background check when he bought his guns even though he had been labeled mentally unstable beforehand. So what do you say, Flood? Does gun control work?

  • No gun control wouldn't work. Think of it like drugs they're illegal but people still do it. It would only cause a black market for guns and crooks would have them. It would only hurt the law a bidding citizens.

  • Statistically, this aspect of the debate is stupid from a formal logic perspective because evidence points to the conclusion that gun control measures vary in effectiveness depending on the culture in which they're implemented. For instance, anyone pro-gun could cite that the UK has a high crime rate and a low gun ownership rate relative to most of the world, and that Switzerland has a low crime rate with a high gun ownership rate. The pro-control person would respond by citing that Japan's gun ownership is nearly non-existent and they also have little to no crime, while the U.S. has an insanely high gun ownership rate that goes along with its huge crime rate. To summarize, you can cite real statistics from both sides. It's easier to just not commit the fallacy of appealing to history and say that gun ownership is a serious decision and regulations should be put in place to keep wackos from hurting people (e.g. background checks for every buyer).

    • Mostly. You can eliminate a lot of recoil with proper control of your firearm.

    • Id be willing to bet -blam!- and women abduction would virtually disappear if all women carried and were trained in personal firearm defense.

        • No Did the probation work? It raised crime rates instead of lowering them. This would do likewise. Im a Texan, if you think you can take my states guns then COME AND TAKE IT. That is all

          • It's like birth control, it works some of the time but only for the people smart enough to know how it works and is separated from the controversy.

          • In a violent culture with a huge population like America, no. In timid cultures in Europe with smaller populations, yes.

          • Tell aussies that it doesn't work. Or Japan, pretty sure their murder rates (from firearms) are extremely low.

            • It creates a black market and creates a violent criminal ring to control the guns. Just like how Prohibition created the people like AL Capone, and how Marijuana Prohibition and other drugs has created the cartels in central to South America.

              • Many types of drugs are illegal. Does that actually keep people from buying and using them?
