Advantages, Disadvantages of Joining a Faction?

New to Destiny multiplayer, and I'm wondering what the drawbacks there are, if any, to joining a faction? I'm currently a Level 23 Warlock (Void Walker subclass) and I was interested in joining FWC for gear with boosts to Intellect and Discipline. I didn't, however, like the weapons Lakshmi-2 had to offer; I much prefer the weapons offered by the Arcite 99-40. That being said, are the weapons offered by the FWC static? I understand that when wearing the bond of a faction, any progress towards your Crucible reputation is instead diverted into your faction reputation. So, while I understand that I could always just get my Crucible rank up and then choose a faction, I would like to progress my faction reputation sooner rather than later in order to attain the desired gear and finally round out my class. TL;DR: I would like to hear some advice from players more knowledgeable and seasoned than I about the benefits and the drawbacks of joining a faction.

  • You can level rep with any faction. If you level up with each one to level 3, you can buy anything from any faction to mix and match. I think level 3 with a faction and level 3 in crucible also unlocks better drops for crucible and faction stuff but I'm not positive about that.

  • Weapons, shaders and ships. Drawbacks? Can only level one faction at a time(including crucible and vanguard) some of their class items look stupid.

    • Before joining a faction, I suggest getting your Vanguard up to rank 3 for easy access to legendary gear so you can access more endgame content. In turn, the endgame content, esp nightfalls, will help rank up which ever faction you choose. Cons of joining a faction: - factions only take Crucible marks for gear, which are way harder to get than Vanguard marks (depends if you like PvP) - aesthetics. Factions require you to wear a faction class armor. Most don't look great, there's other class armors I'd rather wear Pros of joining a Faction: - allows more control of your INT, DIS, and STR stats. Each factions focuses on different combinations of 2 stats. There's no extra cooldown for going over 100% in a stat so having over ~290 is a waste. You're better off getting gear with different stats to balance it out. - faction guns. Factions have more guns than they sell at the tower. They can be obtained from Nightfalls, engrams, and rank up packages. In many cases, I like those guns over the Vanguard versions because I prefer their stats/perks. -exclusive items. Factions have a chance to award faction shaders and ships upon rank up. They're consider rare collectables.

      • The only disadvantages are really that you lose experience to other areas besides Eris. You also have the be playing crucible to get marks and commendations to buy things (commendations system will be dumped at HoW, save them to level the factions). The advantages are some unique items such as weapons and shaders that are different to those of crucible or vanguard, or in upcoming HoW there will be faction ships.

      • You can only buy gear by playing the broken piece of shit of pvp they call crucible.

      • I would work on leveling your Vanguard rank up to 3 first. With vanguard rank 3, you'll be able to purchase legendary gear and weapons. You have pretty good selections in gear and weapons from vanguard as well that can give you a solid start, and get you to a level where you'll be able to raid, if you choose to do so. Now I leveled my vanguard up first and decided to level up factions not too long ago. I wish I would've started earlier. There is no real drawback to joining a faction other than the fact that the stuff you can buy is only able to be purchased with crucible marks. For me this is rather annoying considering I'm primarily a PvE player. But the pros definitely outweigh the cons. You can get some pretty cool guns. The packages are really the hookup. You can get awesome shaders, ships, guns with good rolls, and armor. And if you get to a point where you don't need to open packages, you can save them until HoW and get exp and maybe armor with more light (if that's how it's set up). But I definitely recommend leveling up vanguard and transitioning to a faction. Good luck!

      • What i did. Vanguard rank 3 Then all faction rank 3 So basically now. I have access to all faction gear if i grind crucible for marks. If you are a warlock like me, i suggest vanguard gear till 31. Then get crota end gear. Weapon wise it's great to have vog weapons. The vanguard weapon 2.0 doesn't appeal to my taste.

      • Plus you have to take in account you will eventually get weapons as a drop in the mail for increased levels. Because of this you want to kind of choose a weapon that fits your play style. For example, i wanted tfwpky 1969 so i leveled crucible rank. The chances i would get it are slim, but at least the chance is there. I did get it by the way, rolled outlaw, explosive rounds, and crowd control.

          • Not too many detriments to joining a faction. -You level up with both Vanguard and Crucible Rep, which means twice as fast. -The colors are a lot cooler than the shaders you get from anything else -The weapons are pretty amazing! You just don't get Vanguard or Crucible levels anymore. You still get Cruci Commendations though, so you can spend the Vanguard marks on materials

          • Positives of joining a faction are rather nice. It's the only way to obtain certain shaders and ships. It can also be a bit easier to level up than crucible or vanguard, as all rep gains from all activities apply to it. The downsides: you don't receive crucible or vanguard rep when in a faction, so it's probably best to at least get to lvl 3 in each before committing to a faction. You are also forced to wear one of the faction class items: which really don't look that great. Its especially bad if you're looking to rep a faction on a Hunter (Warlock is the least noticeable, but still rather annoying: I much prefer my IB bond). You could always just switch to it just when you turn in bounties but that's hardly maximizing your faction exp.

            • Maybe doesn't quite answer your question, but I would level up Vanguard and Crucible to 3. After that, no real disadvantage, ideally level all factions to 3, you never know what the next dlc will bring.

              • It's a lot easier to rank up a faction due to the fact that not only your crucible, but your vanguard reputation both apply to it. My best suggestion is rank up FWC to rank 2 to buy their gear. Then keep ranking up your quarter masters to hopefully get a good weapon drop.

                • Is your goal to level up as fast as possible so you can access more end game content or are you more interested in the competitive aspect? I ask because while it is easier to gain faction reputation, as opposed to Vanguard/Crucible rep, buying faction weapons and armors requires Crucible marks, meaning you have to really enjoy the Crucible. Also, most faction gear is more geared towards the Crucible. To sum it up, if your focus is PvP, chose a faction and equip their class item. If your focus is on the PvE content, stick with leveling up your Vanguard armory rank.
