Do you believe Call of Duty is bad for the gaming industry?

Do you believe Call of Duty is bad for the gaming industry? Some people say it's dumbing down games to appeal to the "COD crowd" Some people say it doesn't promote developers to be creative Let me hear your thoughts and opinions

  •
The healthy mermaid mind doesn't wake up in the morning thinking this is its last day in the ocean. But I think that's a luxury, not a curse. To know you're close to the shore is a kind of freedom. Good time to take... inventory. Out-inked. Outnumbered. Out of our minds on a suicide mission, but the coral and seaweed here stained with thousands of years of fishy warfare... they will remember us for this. Because out of all our vast array of nightmares, this is the one we choose for ourselves. We go forward like a breath exhaled from the sea. With vigor in our hearts and one goal in sight: We. Will. Kill him. Bloop bloop bloop.
CODfish

  • I think it's bad for devs from a design stand point, because they're probably sick of working on the same game, year after year. They can't innovate much because if they change the formula, they might ruin it... and of course i don't believe Activision would allow it. But most importantly, i think it's really bad for players... Activision is basically "forcing" players to spend money every year, to get the most "up-to-date" multiplayer, and people are falling for it. Basically the community is fragmented into several games, when in my opinion the best approach would be, creating one game that would have a long time span. But of course, Acitivion just cares about the money, it's a bussiness after all. I honestly don't believe that most people buy these games because of the Single Player campaing! CoD is a little bit like Counter-Strike and HALO in the sense that what will keep people hooked for a long time is the MP. There's no way i would pay 60 euros/Dollars every year for playing a campaing.

  • Yes. Look at the FPS games we have now. Almost all the mainstream ones (Halo, Far Cry) are trying to copy aspects from that series like mindless sheep instead of being innovative on their own.

  • I think it depends on what you class as "bad" Many will claim its good because of the huge sales, and thus, the amount of money being made from the title, which in turn allows a large number of people to make a living. Honestly, I think the blame lies in the crowd who have bought every COD title, ever year since COD 4. I just bought black ops 2, my first COD title since COD 4, every other one, I just borrowed from friends. If people want the gaming industry to change, they need to speak with their wallets, and convince others to do the same.

  • It doesnt bring any new ideas to the table as such, but hell it promotes video games in general and brings in a lot of money... Which I hate to admit is good for the industry

    • Yes, Call of Duty is bad for the gaming industry, or should I say the dumbasses who buy it every year are bad for the gaming industry. With it being a mega success while changing very little over a years time, this gives other developers the idea that they can do that too, or publishers the idea that they can do this with their successful properties. (Look at Ubisoft and Assassin's Creed, AC2, then Brotherhood then Revelations) All in the span of what? 3-4 years? All without a major leap in technology. Then there was a substantial break, and AC3 comes out, it has those technological leaps and bounds. So, if you want improvement in your games over time, Call of Duty isn't doing it, and it's making billions. People want to make billions, so they'll want to follow the CoD formula. Things become stagnant quick, and we accept it. So, yeah, Call of Duty is bad for the gaming industry, but it's all the people who purchase CoD year after year which are the real problem.

        • Nothing wrong with CoD, the problem is when other developers try to rip it off.

Yes, now many game are trying to be more like it. Resulting in very bad games that don't even get the cod fanbase they were aiming at because the actual cod just released the same game only new maps and guns the every year. Then the developers of the game that tried to get the cod fanbase to their game lose the people who liked their game already. True story.
