JENMONKEY’S Rules of Etiquette on Patrol

JENMONKEY’S Rules of Etiquette on Patrol (for those who care about being polite) 1. When entering a new zone, look around and see if there are other players nearby. If so, adjust your rotation in a manner that gives everyone a little space. 2. If you find a chest, before opening it check to see if anyone else is nearby. If so, attempt to get their attention allowing them to get the chest, as well. 3. Don’t follow other players around shooting the enemies they are trying to kill. They may be working on a bounty that requires a large group. Let them have that spawn and run to the next one. 4. Don’t just kill half the spawn and run off. Kill the whole group, triggering the next spawn or drop ship. It can be very frustrating to run up on an area ready to super to only find one Dreg hiding in a corner. I have personally witnessed whole zones maintained in this state, and have been forced to go to orbit. **I have gone to orbit then reentered a planet’s patrol, only to be plopped right down in the same damn world I left. So shoosh with your “you can just leave and come back” comments. 5. STOP LOOT CAVING! This throws the spawns completely off. Just stop doing it. You can get just as much blue, rare bullshit running around or on missions. It’s just lazy. Knock it off. Go do Exclusion Zone on Heroic, I promise you will get all the blue and green engrams you dream of. 6. Don’t assume that other players are exploiting a loot cave. They may be trying to complete bounties and need the kills you are taking. Let them have that spawn for the time being, leave and come back when they are done. There is a difference between loot caving and waiting for a spawn for double fusion kills or triple special weapon kills. You aren't standing there all day. Ever noticed that the Hive majors stop spawning eventually. Hitting the same spawn too many times in a row I believe causes this to happen, so I run around every two groups or so and kill everything else and come back. 7. If a Public Event happens in the zone you’re in and you have the time, lend your fellow guardians a hand. Targets can be extremely difficult to complete as a low level (or even high level) player by yourself. Every gun helps. 8. The Blades of Crota are first come first serve. Whoever gets there first and kills the Blade knight gets the blade/spawn. Sometimes I don’t need the blade kills just the Blade Knights, I then might use the hive spawns as a means to complete another bounty, so bugger off, don't block the spawns, don't grab the blade and kill everything, and please, whatever you do, don't shoot the hive. Go to another zone and get your own blade, please. If I see one more level 14 grab that blade out from under me I am going to snap-crackle-pop. If I don't need the kills I am happy to let you have it, which I will indicate by running off to kill something else. 9. If someone messages you politely asking for you to please leave said spawn alone, don’t write back with snarky remarks and name-calling. You sound silly. *10. Before going AFK please don't leave your character standing in the middle of a spawn. Hop on your sparrow and go to a loading area between zones or in a room you are confident enemies don't spawn from. Remember the area clear of the spawn is larger than you think. Some of you will try to call me a whiner or say I am just ranting, but I am just calling players out for their rude, patrol behavior. Destiny is a shared world, and just because you are on-line doesn’t mean manners go out the window. I know some of you will just dismiss this post. I expect it. Who needs manners, right? For those you who fit this description, disregard this post. It's not for you. *Stop telling me to do bounties on missions. I know I can, but I like open world play. I like running around and exploring. So, enough with that argument, please. Also it's hard to do patrol bounties in mission. Benefits of doing Patrol missions for those not on the up and up- 1. I haven't done a Vanguard Strike since October and my marks always max for the week. I get them in public events, Nightfalls and Weeklies, that's it. 2. Public events= strange coins, motes of light, ascendant materials, and I know a guy who got Radiant materials. Still crossing my fingers. Split up and call them out. You'll get three pretty quick. 3. Patrol missions are the best way to get Rep fast, period. Faction rank ups give you a chance for rare gun rewards that you might never come across otherwise. Examples the Purifier, the Calming, etc.. 4. Bounties done with friends on patrol go really fast. Make orbs for each other, kite enemies, etc... 5. Did I tell you I was sick of Strikes? Yeah no strikes but the Nightfall and weekly for me. 6 a week, bam! Patrol missions are under rated.

            • Who actually plays patrol? I sure as hell don't! Only reason I used to was to farm materials. It's really boring to play patrol IMO

            • I've made about four friends I play with frequently by pointing out chests and combining forces when I recognize another player is grinding materials in an area. Plus, getting someone to farm with you makes the process more efficient because two sets of eyes are better than one. However, I don't think many people will be changed by your post because good etiquette is learned as a tadpole, not as an old frog.

For the people saying "I paid for the game, I'll play how I want," that's the most banal bullshit imaginable. If you buy a board or otherwise physical game to play with friends and family but can't maintain any sort of etiquette, nobody's gonna finish the game with you. If you buy a stake in a poker game but can't handle table etiquette, you'll be asked to leave the table, or maybe even the building. If it's a sanctioned game, anyway. If it's a backroom game, you may even lose a couple teeth on your way out. So don't say you're acting like an asshole because you paid for the game. You're acting like an asshole because you're playing remotely, alone, free from any consequence for your impulse, and you were an asshole before you ever even purchased Destiny. Paying for the game has nothing to do with it; never did. So be an asshole. Roll with it. It's certainly not uncommon, which is the entire point of etiquette to begin with. But don't bother trying to justify it with some trite little excuse like you "paid for it." At that point you graduate from ordinary asshole to stupid asshole. The former is objectively preferable, even among other assholes.

              • mostly agree, however I don't think you need to go out of your way to try to get someones attention for chests- I believe those are also first come first serve

              • Bravo, I generally don't patrol anymore. But I'd like to get back into it, Cosmodrome is the only place I enjoy patrolling anyway, and it just gets boring after so many loops around the limited area.

              • Yeah, Patrol is my main gig as well. There's a fine line between "showing off the new Ice Breaker" and "kill stealing" which I try not to cross, but probably do from time to time. If I see a Level 5 duking it out with the Blade of Crota, for instance, it's hard to decide whether this player really wants my help or not. I generally do pitch in with a headshot or two just to even the odds, and try to let the other guardian finish him off.

              • Let me also add, if you have a hive/vex/fallen major bounty and someone is in the area (most likely doing the same thing), you don't have to compete killing the majors, i.e. rocketing or nova bombing them before the other guardian gets to them. As long as you both hit the major/ultra at least once, you will both get the point.

                  • Dear JENMONKEY, Though I agree with some of your points, I have more troubles with you ' claiming' part of an open-world for your own-benefit because you are ' on a bounty'. Please understand that most players don't read minds. From your post however, it seems you actually message other players to (hopefully kindly and politely) ask them to leave/ leave said spawn alone. I don't know if you do, but saying you are just using it for a bounty may make them more willing to comply than if you just ask them to leave it alone, please. The former implies you have a purpose, and require their cooperation, while the second sounds (Even if not intended) like you are denying them the right to roam in the open-world. Also understand that if I'm on patrol and you're the third guy in a row ' claiming' a spawn point, I won't be as cooperative as with the first two ones. The pb is that you'll never know about this. And yes, patrol is underrated.

                    • Back when I was new, like level 10 Titan, I was patrolling on Earth one day. I ended up in the walker public event with a level 30 Hunter after killing it I start to wave at him but he knifes me and runs off. I think to myself "What an @$$hole!" and go on about shooting fallen. A few seconds later he rushes in out of nowhere and knifes me again, by this point I'm getting annoyed. I turn and swing at him, and he knifes me again and runs. Only this time I chase him thinking "ok now it's on!" I sprint after him into a building and Fist of Havoc before realizing he's been trying to show me a chest. LOL Turns out I was the @$$hole. Rule 2 reminded me of that and ever since then I've refrained from trying to show people chests. I'd rather not presume they didn't know about it.

                      • So, today on Venus there was this guy with his icebreaker trying to steal my kills from far away, so I confronted and he teabagged me. I proceeded to follow his ass for 10 minutes killing everything with my Gjallarhorn from a range he wouldn't get the XP. The guy ended up sending an "OK IM SORRY STAHP" message, I teabagged and left. Was that wrong? LOL
