How to: Being a sword bearer, timing, and best attacks. [Hard Mode]

Alright! Before we get into this I want to make it clear that this is MY WAY of being a sword bearer. I had enough success to be convinced to share this with other folks who might need some advice. This will cover when you should tell your team mates to shoot Crota down, when you need to start jumping up, what combo and how many hits to land on Crota, and when to/how to leave without getting killed. I will not be covering what strategy to use when dealing with boomers/ogre's/adds. I will make a separate post covering the most efficient way to Kill Crota without having to generate many orbs or deal with boomers 90% of the time. Lets get into it. As the sword holder, you need to be ready to pick up the sword whenever the sword bearer goes down. Do what you have to do, jump over thralls, jump over the sword bearer...Just keep your health high and you eyes ready for the sword. Once you have the sword here are the steps you need to take: 1. You will run to the left side and jump on top of the rock. As soon as you're getting ready to jump ontop of the rock, you have to tell your team mates to shoot. Make sure you can't see Crota from the rock because if you can, it is most likely that he can see you and shoot you down (we are aware of how inconsistent this is...) 2. Keep your eyes open and ears focused (what?) and be ready to hear/see the rockets coming from your team mates. Whenever you see rockets flying across Crota you will hurry and get to him. I suggest that you slide as you get closer to Crota to evade any of the shots he gets at you just so you can avoid getting hurt. 3. ( I will cover two combo's a and b) a) As Crota is going down this is the attacks/combo you want to use: Melee, Melee, Melee, Smash, Smash. b) It takes exactly 18 heavy smashes to kill Crota. The 15th smash is the one that causes Crota to enrage. So, if you have the sword and you are landing your 14th shot, I suggest that you drop the sword and wait for a fresh one. Why? Because you don't want the sword to disappear as you are hitting Crota. This means that Crota will move left/right depeding on the stratey your team is using. You will wait until Crota goes back to the Middle! ( I personally use the combo a because I know when to stop hitting Crota and I'm use to it). 4. As soon as you see Crota's skin color change, you will run away and jump and swing away through the air. Do not fly/run across the bridge because Crota will sometimes chase your sword bearing ass down! (Again, we know how inconsistent this is...) This is basically everything you have to do as a sword bearer. The rest is up to how your team whats to handle boomers and whether or not they can take Crota's shield down quick! This is effective with any strategy you want to use, but the best one (without having to generate infinite amount of orbs) is the one I can go ahead and provide for you guys if requested. I hope this helps, again, this is MY WAY of being a sword bearer. Edit: Made it clear in the title that this is for hard mode. I am led to believe that this can be done with a lv31 against a lv32 Crota on normal. Edit 2: Thanks to Sir Cums a lot for a reddit post that covers huge amounts of data and calculations. This is for those who prefer to see numbers to prove what works best. http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2p2p3n/analysis_crotas_end_final_boss_damage_c Edit 3: Thanks to KirbysBack for some footage that you can see if you are a visual learner instead of a reading type. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbY0XZFsaNY

  • Just killed Crota as sword-bearer using the info you gave. Cannot thank you enough for this made my job much easier, you are legend! The way i did it was (4+3)+(4+2)+(3+2) smashes which worked like a charm, i found only going for two smashes on the second sword, second down gives much more time to escape and reduces the chance of a wipe. Some more specific Bladedancer tips i would add from my experiences. A) Use super + invisibility to be at the sword as it drops (Gives you more time to do the below tactics) B) Sword swipe as you jump onto the rock to cancel the Invisibility. C) Use Crouch to go invisible on the rocks. (I find counting to 3 should do it) D) Give the order to burn Crota as you jump up, this will mean you are always at his feet as he drops. this is the round you should push for 4 hits. Timing might depend on your DPS team, If you are finding you are waiting by his feet to long then adjust your timing. E) Dropping the sword and using your blink strike means that you will be at his feet again for the second round so it is highly advantageous if you practice this. Try (if you can) to stab him when you are between him and the oversoul, he will turn this way and sometimes when he goes down will be facing this way meaning your best escape route will be out the front (shortest route). Sometimes Crota will swipe for you where you stabbed him so strife away form that spot to be safe. F) Using this tactic i never had an issue with sword disappearing during swipes but once or twice (When the sword drops far away or my invisibility didn't come up straight away) i had it disappear during my escape, just be aware that this can happen and be prepared for it and you should be ok. This is the reason i advise against 4 hits on the second round, target is 6 hits per sword so you have the breathing space to do this. As for the general tactics the Center platform + Titan bubble backup worked the best. I've seen a few other tactics (Ice-breaker duty/distraction in the Ogre room/Titan distraction on the bridge) but the bubble blocking the boomers is the best because you have blessing/orbs to help with escape and your titan can take down the swordbarer if he hides. Here are some tips you should give your Titan. A) Your titans secondary function is burning that swordbearer if/when he hides. His weapons should be specced as such. Personally i find rocket launchers to be a risk amongst thrawls so prefer Thunderlord or Song of Yut. B) Ask your titan to run behind you when going for the rocks. Sometimes thrawls will jump for him miss and get you even if you are invisable, and as we all know hunters are a bit squishy compared to titans. C) There is a chance he never ran the sword to take a minute to show him where you are going and tell him how quick Crota can be after getting up so he knows he cannot hang about.

Today was our second time attempting Crota on hard, and this time I managed to get him half way, before we got -blam!-ed by ogres. Ogres are the main problem to us. Edit: Okay, so we tried earlier to do crota hard, got him to the last 5% and got killed by oversoul

      • Can someone confirm the sword combo melee melee heavy being as efficient? I use to do it on normal mode and kill him quick but haven't tried it on hard yet. I ask this because when just doing the heavy smashes while holding forward, it sometimes messes up causing a delay forcing you to only get 2-3 in.

          • One thing I find very useful as a hunter is to go to the left rockface and wait till I can go invisible and then call a salvo on crota and hit him4 heavy hits. I then drop the sword when his shields change and melee him with blink strike to go invisible again and call more rockets and get another 4 hits on him. this method is very safe and you can do massive damage and avoid being hit by boomers if you stand behind crota in the middle while invisible and hitting him.

            • A good indicator to know how much more you can hit him on his health is if his health drops below the "r" in his name, he will enrage. You'd want to keep his health between the "Cr" as the perfect area for not enraging him.

                      • This is strat is good. What I find works better for me(cause I'm just making conversation here and not trying to argue with what someone else is comfortable with) is: 1) I go to the right side in hard mode instead of the left. I used to go to the left in normal, but found a little better cover from the boomers and crota on the right. 2) I call out fire as soon as i jump up to the rock, and as soon as i see the rockets at about the door where the swordbearer comes out, I run towards crota. 3) I've timed it so that I arrive just as his shield goes down, and he begins the animation of kneeling. I do 3 slams, and then melee back to the rocks. Then my team will call out the next "fire" as, I can't see when he turns green. If I get a super I do smash, smash, super, smash...if not, i just do 3 smashes. then I melee off the front edge and back to my team. 4)next go around i will do the same, but NO SUPER(if you get a super here you will likely cause too much damage and he will enrage) 5)3rd sword I'll get 3 smashes on first attempt, and he will enrage...with 2nd attempt if I hit the super it takes 1 smash, if not it takes 2 and he is down

                          • Now I'm not the best at the sword, but I can use it. One thing I've notice, most people still wanna do the "tell me when his shield is low" strategy. It's terrible, every game I've been in they say it when he's already going down, or they only shoot two rockets and say he's going down then stop shooting. Ends terrible every time. These videos people are sharing are the best strategies I've ever seen, cluster of rockets and up there with the sword as they hit, I wish I would have YouTube this earlier. I'm no scrub, just damn close with not staying up to date on strategies.

                            • I don't get why people use bumper sword combos. Trigger slam does more dps. Show me a 2 sword hard Crota kill using bumper combos. The only place bumpers have is for a mess up where you don't have enough time to do your slams.

                                • I usually take him to enrage in 14 hits. Don't know how and why this happens, but after 14 hits he enrages Best tip I can give is to use a hunter with invisibility. Get on the rock next to him, turn invisible, tell your team to shoot him and hit him 4 times. press triangle or Y and blink strike crota to turn invisible again, this time, hit him 3 times. New run same strategy, but hit him 3-3 Last run, just let it rip, best is to get in 4 hits first time he goes down and finish him off after that, he'll need like 1 or 2 hits

Also, I saw someone ask if this is Hard mode and you said yes. But is it the same amount in Normal? Only a 31 and ran CE completely once. Not up to take one Hard yet. But to use the info in normal would help as well.
