The Crucible needs a ranking system.

Throughout my Destiny experience I have found no motivation to continue playing in the Crucible outside of the Iron Banner. Rep and mark gains are minimal in comparison to Vanguard, and considering how I don't have a lot of time to play I'd rather level up quickly and get good weapons fast so I can raid and such. So, I thought of an idea to motivate people to participate in the Crucible. 1. Introduce a ranking system This is kind of self-explanatory. Something simple like Halo's 1-50 system is good. 2. Implement rank-based matchmaking (Trueskill) Seriously, this is one of the most annoying things about the Crucible in my opinion. Many people do not play this because they aren't good at the Crucible, which doesn't make sense. I think I am better at the Crucible than I am at Vanguard things (Raids, Strikes) but I am only doing those Vanguard things. This would make it better for bad and good people. You know something is wrong when you have to have a 2.0 KD or something along the lines to be deemed good (which I don't have actually). 3. Scale the rewards with rank This fixes the slow progression relative to PvE problem. You want rep/marks faster? Get to higher ranks so that each win will give you more of them. Someone is going to say that this is not motivational for people who are not good at PvP, but this is basically the same as Nightfall/Raids. I know a lot of people struggled with Omnigull's strike with Arc Burn, and some gave up because it was too difficult. However, I got it done with two 29s and a 30 without using any good weapons other than a single Thunderlord. Basically, PvE rewards you for playing well, so PvP should too. An example of this would be, assuming Destiny adopts Halo's 1-50 ranks, at rank 25 players would receive 5 marks per win and 3 marks per loss. This increases to 6 marks per win and 4 per loss at rank 40. Rep could scale more precisely. This will promote excellence while making intentionally losing for lower ranks (I saw this a lot in Halo) less desirable, as losing AND lower ranks give worse rewards. 4. Add another Vendor This takes a bit of explaining. Assuming Halo's 1-50 ranking system, a guardian would only gain this rep (let's call it Legend so we can Become Legend) if he/she wins while at rank 50. This is difficult, since rank 50 will basically be for the best of the best. Not only does a guardian have to reach 50, but also they have to win against other 50s. The grind won't be that simple either; it could take a large sum of wins at 50 to get a usable amount of rep. What a guardian can buy using Legend rep is raid gear for Crucible marks + a Commendation for Helm/Chest as well as elemental primaries and top tier specials/heavies. These would be upgraded using normal Ascendant materials. Considering that getting Legend rep is much more difficult than completing a raid (pretty sure), I would say it is fair. This vendor would create an incentive for people to grind Crucible and actually become more skilled (as is the goal lore-wise). Those who perform exceptionally well will be rewarded with gear. If, lore-wise, the city has a limited stock of these items, it would only give them to the best to fight the Darkness. Yes, this means that performance in the Crucible will affect PvE, but as we all probably know PvE already has an effect on PvP. Most of the exotics/top tier guns are obtained from PvE methods. The people with the most guns have more options, which is an advantage. Overall, I think these changes/additions would make the Crucible more fun and rewarding while giving people who do well more than just a K/D to look at (because seriously, if you get the highest score you don't get anything). EDIT: My stance on Supers: I think Supers are fine but Orbs of Light are not. Supers are good as a free kill (sometimes more) that can be used strategically, especially in Control, but OoL lower the CD unnecessarily. They just give you back your super for no cost. Intellect also lowers the super CD, but at the cost of grenade CD or melee CD. OoL just drop at no cost. They don't even require teamwork. I can just run around and find random OoL on the ground, which is stupid. Lore-wise, OoL are stupid. You think Shaxx gives a flying fck whether we can throw a ball at the ground, or slam the ground and kill someone 20 feet away? He made the Crucible so Guardians can get better at gunplay. Guardians should be practicing aim, positioning, and decision-making. So supers are fine, but they shouldn't be up so often.

  • ^ best suggestion iv seen in a while right there. Deej! Hit this dude up! See, alot of people would be upset seeing this because it may seem.. "insulting" i guess but its really not it makes playing PVP, fair for everybody. Honestly I think the complaints on stuff in PVP would be cut in half at least if this where implemented.

  • I agree wholly with the 1-50 system. Scaling rep/rewards based on rank is tricky since some people just play PvP only, and I think that there should always be some PvE--exclusive content to keep everyone focused on the main storyline...but seeing as there really isn't one of those, maybe it should be tried. I don't like the idea of another vendor and currency, but other than that this is a well-written piece.

  • Nope, true skill punishes the good players as the player pool is smaller. matchmaking puts you in lobbys with players on the other side of the world which leads to all sorts of latency problems. Connection based on region should always be the number one priority. When I first started playing games online I got rekt, but you learn a lot from getting beat by better players, that makes you improve your game... We all have to take our licks on the chin.

    • Adding ranking to a PvP so unbalanced won't make much different IMO but if it would help with the unbearable matchmaking bullshit system we currently have I support this.

      • Please listen to this guy! Basically I only bought destiny (about 3 months ago) because I am a Halo junkie and I figured Bungie still knew what they were doing. The Crucible is very fun, some things are... strange... but still great. However I'm already losing interest because there is no ranking system. If I wanted a game solely for "pve" then I'd just play a Bethesda game lol. The competition is what makes FPS games so great. I think there needs to be a system just like older Halo days. A set of "social" playlists, and a set of "ranked" playlists. That way people who are not very good can still do their bounties and such in the more relaxed setting of the "social" playlists.

      • Rank-based matchmaking is not fun. Anyone with 2.0+ kd is annoying, and play against them makes me want to quit the game......

          • This would be good. The only reason putting me off of the crucible is being out with shitty players. I'm not saying I don't have bad games every now and then but some of these people have 0.07kd at the end of the match. My actual crucible character has a decent kd and wish I could at with better people. It would be nice to go into the crucible and know you will be place with people at your skill level.

            • Just to clear some of the info about halo 3 ranking system. It took us a long to figure out but basically this is how it goes. Before a match beings the program will run some odds on the outcome of the match based on rank NOT number but like private, Sargent, captain, etc. There was also xp you can gain. So if you were level 20 with rank and had about 400xp you should be a captin. If you had a lvl 20 with 600xp you'll get a little bar under you captain (remember the bar). You can get up to 3 bars and then they turn gold. now you get 1 xp for wining any type of matchmaking game and to go from 20 to 30 shouldn't take much longer than avg 30-50 games. So you can see that someone with a lvl 20 and 1,200 xp is very unbalanced usually people in this piston suck. It shouldn't take you 1,200 wins to get a 30 unless you loss most of them. So with these gold bars on your captain (this also goes for every rank expect general) the program running will think you suck. so now picture 2 teams ( 4 people) everyone is a captain. 1 team is full of captains that have no bars and the other team "team 2" is full of gold bars. The program they use is very harsh against the gold bars and assumes that team has a very little chance of winning. There for if they will they will get a huge boost on their rank. If they lose like the game thought they would it wouldn't hurt them too much. MY PROOF. There were websites that sold lvl 50s for as low as $35. How were these people ever going to pump out lvl 50's to meet the demand i mean i saw a destiny lvl 30 warlock hunter and titain sell for $400 on ebay so we know there's people buying these accounts. well the truth is a lvl 50 can be made in just 17 games... You start off a fresh account and play with someone who has a rank of 10 (i think it's a lieutenant) and make sure he has those gold bars. If you play doubles and win every game you can get it as low as 17 games because they game will think you're team is going to lose. HERE'S THE PROBLEM. The more xp you had the longer it takes to rank up. accounts with a max lvl of 10 with 2000 xp (bad kids) were for some reason put in a spot where ranking seems impossible. The 2nd dude with the lvl 10 and 2000 xp might go up a rank or 2 after 20 straight wins but could lose 2 games and lose a rank. The fresh account playing with him will have very different ranking effects. So people who weren't good for a year or two who started becoming good will have a problem ranking up if they gained to much xp. (note you don't lose xp) Bottom line the ranking system was kinda of broken. However this whole talk of k/d is pretty stupid are you trying to promote campers? It has to be based on wins and to avoid having crappy teams you are presented with a choice play with people you know or don't simple as that. I didn't go into no halo 3 ranked match without a full team, no randoms for me. If you made it based on score some people would be at a disadvantage like the snipers. Me i like fusion rifles and on a normal game i'll go 2.0 or above with 5000 and points in control. However i do like my sniper but i get a score with an avg of 3000 points and a k/d of 3,5 or higher. So if it's based on points people who are up in front with the action fusion/shotguns/auto rifles will have an a better chance with more points. Make it k/d snipers will have a better chance. THE PERFECT RANKING SYSTEM.... If there was one every fps that has a ranking system would use it. We can only pick the best one with the least flaws.

One idea i had ! For Example Iron banner gear should be Geared toward PVP like Raid armor has Perks specifically for that raid (More super from Oracle kills or more Dmg to Oracles in VOG) How about Iron banner Gear: Helmet : Increased Range or Radar while Aiming in a Crucible Match Gloves: Increased Stability in a Crucible Match Chest Piece : Increased Recovery or Armor in a Crucible Match Boots: Increased Agility in a Crucible Match again these are just examples because who needs (More auto Rifle, Scout rifle, Hand Cannon ammo in a Crucible match....)

                  • Your take on supers and orbs is interesting. I've long thought a change needed to happen in the crucible regarding supers. I think you are onto something. Removing friendly orbs for super kills would help curb super spam a lot. +1 Well written

                    • Yes. I don't understand how ANY FPS nowadays can survive without ranks. Ranks help keep casual players from being destroyed and competitive players interested in your game longer.

                      • They NEED TO FIX point allocations 1st!!! Combat rating isn't completely accurate on judging player skill, much less k/ds as they're manipulated easily on here Why are shotgun kills worth more than a handcannon kill?! Trust me they're harder, by a lot Why are noobtubes worth more than scout rifle or sniper kills?? & so on... Its rewarding non-skilled kills more than skilled plays as of right now >:l Skilled kills & active play in a match should rank u far higher than easy kills with passive play!!! Wtfudge is it even this way???
