Distinct enemy factions, Huge AI rework part 1 - The Fallen

Though there are four different enemy factions, it often feels like you're fighting a re-skinned enemy over and over in destiny. These suggestions are on how to make each enemy factions unique in their encounters and make fighting them more interesting for players. Fallen: The fallen are space pirates, not warriors. Though they have a proud heritage they have been reduced to scavengers, taking advantage of easy pickings while steering clear of obvious danger. Units: Dregs: Often sent ahead of vandals and captains to test the strength of enemy positions and targets, Dregs are surprisingly aggressive and will throw themselves into battle without care for their own lives. However this facade will quickly fade when an enemy doesn't fall quickly and they will retreat and take position alongside the higher ranking fallen. Shanks: Droids with minimal programming, shanks show neither fear nor courage. They will advance continuously towards targets without regard for their own safety, when fallen forces retreat shanks are often left behind as scapegoats to stall enemy forces. Vandals: Quite tactical in their approach, vandals are supreme opportunists. They will pursue weak targets aggressively to push their advantage whereas when facing a thorny target they will hold back and try to whittle it down from a safe distance. They constantly change positions on the battlefield to keep the enemy guessing and will retreat tactically when in danger, covering themselves and their comrades with suppressive fire. Stealth Vandals: Equipped with cloaking devices, these cunning fallen initially hang back behind their visible brethren. Once a battle is underway they sneak around their opponents and hit them from behind, using their swords to quickly eliminate enemies before they can turn to defend themselves. They may also set up ambushes, letting other fallen lure enemies close so they can spring up from cover and strike at their surprised targets. Captain: These veterans mainly hang back and assess the battlefield while lesser fallen do the work, they can often be found in an elevated position surveying the battlefield. When forced into combat captains are supremely aggressive, cowardice among commanders is punishable by amputation and demotion or worse, death. They are the centre of a fallen pack and hold it together, if a captain falls the morale of other fallen will quickly follow and they will scatter and retreat. This makes captains priority targets when engaging packs of fallen. Servitor: These highly advanced machines are not built for combat and instead back off when confronted, suppressing enemies with their own firepower while calling on other fallen for support. However they are still a threat, servitors constantly generate ether, which heals fallen in close vicinity and can make dealing with a pack significantly more troublesome. While fallen are usually quite cowardly, they are fiercely protective of their servitors and will group around the machines to protect them, fighting till the last dreg to keep them safe. Factions: House of Devils: One of the more savage of the fallen houses, the house of devils have a deep hatred of humanity and aren't afraid to take action when necessary. When they have numerical superiority they will try to push forward and overwhelm their targets, dregs and vandals will attack while captains stay back and asses the battle. If this proves ineffective they will quickly pull back and regroup before trying again. Once their numbers drop their morale starts to crack and they will retreat, giving opportunistic guardians the chance to hunt down some easy prey. House of Exile: When competing with the hive you need to hold your ground, the house of exile mimmic the tactics of their rivals and respond to hostiles with overwhelming force. Hordes of dregs and shanks will rush you while vandals and captains give support with wire rifles and shrapnel launchers. This show of aggression is enough to put off hive and guardians alike, though the house of exile will not pursue their targets far, more interested in keeping their territory safe from attack as they are still establishing themselves as a house. House of Winter: The most cunning of the fallen houses, the house of winter strike with tactical precision. When first confronted they will appear to retreat but do not be fooled by this ploy, once an enemy takes the bait they will pounce. Stealth vandlas hidden from sight will flank the target and surround it, making a quick and fatal mistake for inexperienced guardians looking for glory. Once an enemy escapes their grasp, though this is not likely, the house of winter will return to their original positions, not wanting to risk unnecessary casualties on pursuing their prey. House of Kings: Proud and honour bound, we suspect these fallen most closely resemble their species before the catastrophe that changed the fallen into the pirates we face today. The house of kings only appear to claim the greatest of treasures and will hold their ground till the last fallen to defend their prize. Unlike other fallen houses their first line is not always consisting of dregs and shanks, captains lead packs of vandals that push forward with surgical precision to eliminate targets before backing off under the suppressive fire of their piers to protect themselves from counter-attacks. Do not underestimate these fallen. House of Wolves: Like their namesake, the wolves are savage and relentless. Captains lead their underlings into conflicts without hesitation, regardless of risk. These fallen usually stick together in small groups and take turns harrassing enemies, wearing them down while their allies recover. Unlike other fallen houses killing a captain will only anger their pack, encouraging rash behaviour and suicidal charges that can catch novice guardians off guard. That's it for this one.
