*Edit*Title and purpose of OP changed. *Edit*
Everything below this paragraph is now irrelevant once HoW drops. Starting at HoW you will NO LONGER earn or be able to redeem Commendations for gear. You can however redeem Commendations for rep at 250 rep per Commendation. 10 Commendations will equal a full rank up.
Adding in bold up here because they are the most common questions.
Commendations can be Vaulted and traded between your characters
You only get a Commendation AFTER you rank 3 and above with Vanguard, Crucible or the three Factions
To my knowledge, they (meaning Commendations) are not RNG based and you should get one for rank 3 and each subsequent rank after
Pay close attention to your equipped class item to be sure you are raking up the correct faction. Don't wear a Vanguard class item if you're trying to rank up one of the three Crucible Factions. If you want to rank up Crucible, do not wear a Dead Orbit class item for instance. Ask if you need further clarification.
WHAT, WHEN, HOW AND WHY?
What are they exactly?
They are like coupons you can use to redeem towards, not for, gear from a vendor. They do NOT allow you to get an item for free. They are simply a VIP pass that allows you access to purchase gear or weapons. One Commendation equals one piece of gear or one weapon. You also will not get them until after you have gotten to level 3 with the Faction you ranked.
When can you use them?
Any time you have one and enough marks to purchase whatever you're trying to get. Simple. Commendations can be Vaulted and recovered by another character.
Let's talk about how you get them now.
You get them when you level up Vanguard, Crucible or one of the three (Dead Orbit, Future War Cult and New Monarchy) Factions. This has been said to be guaranteed when you level up and is not RNG based.
How exactly are they used?
When you rank up Crucible or the three Factions you will receive a Crucible Commendation that can be used for...you guessed it! Crucible or Faction Vendors only. Vanguard is a ditto. Same same, people. You cannot use a Crucible Commendation for Vanguard or Vanguard Commendation for Crucible vendors.
After receiving your Commendation you may walk, skip or jump your happy asses to the proper vendor and use it along with the marks that your vendor takes to purchase gear and or weapons. Remember that one Commendation equals one piece of gear or weapon.
We are going to hop back into the WHAT realm again ladies and gentlemen. What can you purchase with them?
Weapons. You MUST have a Commendation (and enough Marks) to purchase a weapon from a vendor. Gear...this one is a little tricky. Arms and legs may be purchased for Marks only. This means you need no Commendation for them. Cool right? Except you need a Commendation (and enough Marks) to buy the helms or chests. That sucks...I am not sure about emblems. Class items are Marks only as well (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
Now for the Million Dollar question boys and girls. Why?
In MMO's, you start with tier 1, with whichever currency is used as the means to purchasing that gear. Marks in our case...
Introducing a second currency, just allows them to sell better gear for that new currency.
I've never played WoW (I think it's always gold with them), but I know in DCUO, you start by gaining marks of triumph. You use those to buy like the first 2-3 tiers of gear, then you start earning marks of valor, then later, on to marks of fury. These new marks became available with new dlc, and separates the market for beginning players to advanced and experienced players.
I was very surprised they replaced the new vanguard and crucible items with the second tier. I understand it's going to be different because we are dealing with FPS and MMO in a very fresh and new way, but it's still odd...
It should go new players get original vanguard/crucible gear, then VoG raid gear, then tier 2 vanguard/crucible, then onto Crota's End raid gear.
I honestly believe they're doing it a little quick at first to generate some more players, possibly.
It can be very discouraging starting a new game and everyone is hitting 32, and you can't get above 26-29, for whatever reason. I'm sure there will be more changes as we explore more into this new way of MMO gaming...
Destiny is a very unique and interesting approach so far, I enjoy being on the ground floor of it all : )
The concept of these commendations is bullshit. Bungie, just remove it. It's bad enough I have to grind through the crucible yet again to re-acquire the same gear, but for -blam!-s sake don't add commendations, especially on some of the gear! It makes no sense to add it this late into the game. I'm Vanguard 5 and New Monarchy 3, I don't feel like going through the shit in the Crucible to rank up again for 1 commendation to get a new chest piece that I ALREADY OWN. Fix your game Bungie, stop ruining it further. It's like you hate your fanbase.
-
how do you trade commendations for rep?
-
I have around 50 Vanguard and 30 Crucible commendations. They serve no real purpose. Each level you get another and another and so on. So yea another form of useless currency used to bottle neck progression. No way will I ever use that many with the current system.
-
After receiving your Commendation you may walk, skip or jump your happy asses to the proper vendor and use it along with the marks that your vendor takes to purchase gear and or weapons.
And if I wish to scurry my "happy ass" to the proper vendor? Did Bungie take even one minute to consider those for whom self-propulsion does not necessarily occur in the form of the walk, the skip, or the jump? What about those who wish to sashay to their nearest vendor? How is RuPaul to acquire a crucible recommendation now? (Um, on second thought, perhaps it would best to keep me in the dark on that one...) This is just another example of the lack of transpatorial diversity in the gaming industry. The walker-, skipper-, and jumper-dominated hierarchy of companies such as Bungie continues to live in its bubble, not knowing - or not wanting to know - that the world around them is changing. They can walk and jump all they want, but they cannot continue to skip over the rest of us. This is discrimination, pure and simple, and we will not rest until this Tower apartheid comes to an end, and commendations are awarded based on merit, not on gait. Whether a player chooses to walk, skip, or jump, saunder, stroll, or mosey, strut, sprint, or merely hoof it to his or her nearest vendor, should not matter... ...As long as they ain't prancing. Can't have none of that sissy stuff.

So as I read this I am stood in front of the crucible handler... I need crucible rank 2 to buy a helmet but a commendation... So that means that the crucible rank 2 I need is actually rank 3? Hmmmm is that right and if so did bungie not realise that the square piece doesn't fit in the round hole?
-
Edited by Kurdaitcha Man: 4/26/2015 10:46:37 PMI just lost all my commendations and believe bungie don't replace lost items. Not hard to replace them I guess.
-
Was this even necessary? I thought commendations were pretty straight forward. The information in this post can be found in game very easily.
-
You should add something about the new trade in system that'll release with HOW. 250 rep per mark sounds great to me.
-
The commendation system makes total sense to me. What does not make sense is the Marks system. You get vanguard marks for pve strikes and other various activities which can only be used for 1/5 of the items available. Crucible marks, on the other hand only come VERY slowly from playing crucible matches. To purchase a gun from the FWC vendor, it would require at LEAST 50 crucible matches (3 marks for a win) to accumulate the required 150 marks. So, to get the vast majority of gear, you basically need to hope it drops in packages/night falls/RNG, or you need to devote ridiculous amounts of time exclusively to the crucible. Bungie, please adjust the system to allow vanguard marks to be useable for more than just vanguard gear! Please!
-
They are used only to buy helmets and weapons
-
Actually, faction packages give you crucible commendations. Better fix that
-
Question. Are the commendations consumed upon use?
-
TL;DR
lol jk, good guy guardian
-
At least if they can be traded between toons that helps a little. But still working on my first toon, I see that the items I want require Rank 2 and a Commendation... so basically, I have to get a toon to Rank 3 first before I can buy a Rank 2 item... makes sense. >.> You should get one at Rank 2 so you can actually buy the Rank 2 item.
-
Wow I leveled up to level 2 in dead orbit and now this shit makes me need to get to a higher level to get Armour! -blam!- you Bungie this game is already an insane amount of farming and now I can't get anything thanks. Now all I have is some boots, my exotic arm piece , and a shitty ass legendary hand cannon ( THE DEVIL YOU DON"T). Plus when you open an engram you can get materials which suck. I had a legendary primary engram and got -blam!-ing material which if I wanted to get materials I would discard it. Bungie just fix your shit because the only people who get slowed down is the slow people do you see what I mean.
-
Basically all those commendations do is take up our already limited vault space. I have about 10 crucible commendations and 5 vanguard commendations. If you could actually use the commendations for something like maybe trade them in for 10 marks a piece then they would be worth having.
-
When Bungie announced that commendations would become a thing I got concerned because I was afraid I wouldn't have enough. Now I have enough to last me for two lifetimes.....
-
Here's something to spin your gears: My friends and I we're doing The 'Nexus' Nightfall. Twice, I had to revive both teammates. Not only did I get the 'Medic' badge for my efforts, I received a 'Crucible' commendation at the end of the strike. Is there a 'medic' in the house? Oh yeah! :D

To quote Brynjolf... Well done lad

This is the top result for Google: how to get crucible commendation Great Post!! Good Job OP, especially for your worthy edits. BUNGIE! Dood wtf!? This is retarded, as soon as I use my few commendations after 100's (ok maybe a lot less) hours of work, the gear gets randomly obsoleted by a single PvE run or a good buy from Xur. I mean why make it so hard to get the commendation when there are so many other random (i'm looking at you cryptarch) and easier ways to fill the slot. I must be a noob because I can't figure it out.
-
Wait a sec... So plz tell me, if I'm right or wrong, sooo if I get a faction (New monarchy, dead orbit or Future war cult) and get them to rank 3 AND onwards, I will ALWAYS receive a crucible commendation? I did level my new monarchy to level 3 and got a commendation so I'm reassuring.
-
Do you get anything for discarding Vanguard Commendations? ex. Ascendant Shards or Energy?
-
So if I want 5 items from vanguard I will need to have rank 15? That seems a bit excessive
-
Edited by Neonface: 12/11/2014 12:41:31 AMThe only people this slows down are us casual players. Like an hour a day kinda casual. I rank up maybe once every two weeks or something? And that's if I go ham on bounties. Sooo... Bungie put in a mechanic to slow down player progression and ended up only slowing down the slow players. *clap*...*clap*...*clap*... Well done...
-
So my question is do you have to have the dark below dlc to earn tge comendations
