An honest question..

So the weekly refresh was yesterday, and I did everything I normally do on Tuesdays, Nightfall first, then classes, then the raid for all 3 of my characters. I sadly did not get the gear I wanted (gauntlets for my alt hunter, arms and legs for my titan). Later that night I was playing with one of my friends, I've known him since middle school and I am 20 now..so he's been one of my closest friends for a little while now. And I asked him if he wanted to do the raid, basically implying that I would do the raid with him even though I really had no reason to do it, because I had already completed it with that character. Then he was all like, "Nah man, I think those raids take too long and I have played too many hours on this video game." Then my other buddy joins the lobby and is all, "VoG guys??" My other friend was then saying, "you don't need to do another raid man, you don't need to get that gear, you might not even get it." All of the comments my friend was making honestly sparked a serious thought in my head, how much Destiny is too much? I have played with many raiders who have 400+ hours played and are still all, "Man I need _____, I need ______." :( When I hear raiders talking about what they need or want from the raid and then they don't get it..I can't help but wonder if this too will be me. 400+ hours in and still searching for more. To be honest, I don't know if I have played this game too much. I have been a gamer my whole life since the Halo CE days. I have always had a social life, always have been in good shape, and I even have a girl that I've dated for the past 19 months. I am a college student, and have a work study job where I get in like 12 hours a week. My honest question I would like to ask is, how much is too much? Are there a certain amount of hours played where you officially become a no life? I want some real responses. Thanks everyone!

  • If you do all of that on Tuesday nights, then you have a lot of free fcking time on Tuesdays. If you dont play the rest of the week, or its significantly less, then you should be ok. Id prefer you play Destiny and secure that education over partying with your "friends" and potentially dropping out or worse getting into any kind of harm. You good.

  • This what you do... Think of stuff that you didn't want , and you will get. (I always get hunger legendaries from faction rank up even tho I have Titan. Never get anything for Titan. I don't use had cannons often(still use once in while). And last night I got FATEBRINGER. I didn't really want it, but I'm really glad I got it. (This only for legendary.). For exotics RNG gave me every armor I wanted. When game first came I wanted HELM-st 14 and no back up plans.... And guess what I have. XUR engram gave me no back up when that was exact thing I wanted

  • I've only put 400+ hours into dark souls, I don't think I could do it with destiny since it's such a grind game, then there's people that put thousands of hours into it and other games. I'd say its only too much when you own a poop bucket.

  • Have a balanced life. The fact that you are asking this question to yourself means there is a void that your soul is sensing within yourself. Balance your gaming with something else you might actually be interested in. Learn to play a new instrument if you have musical talent. Do something new. You can always come back and catch up with the games , hell you might even get them at a lower price :P Games are not everything. It is good that you have a much balanced life already I think. But this whole ELITIST thought about owning every piece of armor or gear it is meaningless. The important question is, do you game to show-off that you have such and such gear? or do you game because of the love of gaming? Once you have figured it out you will know your answer

    • I had everything for my titan after 7 raids, and that was at 127 hours. My warlock I don't play nearly as much but 3 raids in and I have almost everything for it also

      • Thank you for all the insight everyone! It appears to me that it's a unanimous decision that "too much" is an amount that is only determined when the game becomes more important than regular life.

      • ? It's different for everyone. I've clocked thousands of hours into the Halo series- both Bungie and 343. Think of video games as entertainment. You can spend it on movies, tv, dining, shopping...the same utility gained from these are all the same. How much is too much? There is no answer lol. You don't need to be ashamed that you play a lot of video games lol, I'm sure your reaction is a lot better because of it and you're more keen on swift decision making. As long as it doesn't consume you and start affecting you in a negative manner, then it is fine. Game on my friend.

      • like most have said only you can decide when its too little or too much, if none of your other activities are suffering from you playing destiny then you are alright.

      • When you play so much that it starts to become a detriment to your life, that is probably too much. If the majority of people in your life tell you that you play too much, there is probably some truth to that. If playing this game becomes a job, then you've played too much. If you, your lady-friend, and your buddies all hang out and play games in your free time, then that is acceptable.

        • I kind of echo the other two posts, "too much" is a variable that's dynamically based on other variable factors. As long as nothing else is suffering in the life of the individual then it's all good. Someone locked in a cell for 18 hours a day could spend those full 18 hours playing the game, but someone who has school / work, and other family/ social commitments would struggle greatly to fit in that amount of time in a day without it having a detrimental effect on these other commitments. Also, it's probably worth bringing up that gaming can be a genuine addiction for some people. People can exhibit similar symptoms of irritability, distraction and even - in extreme cases - violence that other addictions can cause if they don't get their gaming "fix". I personally think that as long as someone can carry out their expected daily responsibilities in a properly prioritised order and they are not depriving them selves of food or sleep, then they are not playing too much, whither they are playing for two hours or twelve. Everything is relative. Let's face it, as bad a rep as games get, it's still not the worst thing one could be spending their time doing.

        • That's a personal decision. What is normal for one person may be too much for another. But a good guideline is that if any non-essential thing starts interfering with essential things, then the non-essential thing(s) need to be removed or adjusted to have less of a negative impact.

        • 12 hrs a week isn't a no life. Probably from 30 and up when u should start re thinking ur choices. But it also depends on what u do when ur not playing, job? Family? More games? I think when u become a no life is when all u do I play that game and only do other things when forced to.
