Optional Matchmaking for Raids; possible solution

Hi Bungie Apologises if someone has posted this before, discussed, etc. If you were to add Matchmaking for Raid would it be possible to search by section/area. I.e. You select the Raid then choose 'Standard' or 'Matchmaking'. You choose 'Matchmaking'. ((For those who have a team of six already, they can choose the 'Standard' option and play the Raid like they currently do)). Next after choosing 'Matchmaking' they choose difficulty. Next, have a screen with each of the stages of the Raid (Spire, Gorgon Maze, etc) and allow a person/persons to search for a team within that area. Once that area is completed the person can continue on with the next area and play as normal. If they do not have time to complete the next section they can back out. Once they are ready to resume completion of the Raid, they return to the menu screen and will notice that the section they completed previously has a check/tick or is greyed out and they can then select another area for a team to be matched with. In regards to rewards; you can either have certain things unlock at the end of each area, pop up on screen; with an additional reward when all areas are completed. (So obviously, you can't go straight to Atheon and get the [chance of] the Vex immediately). In addition, you can still go into an area you've already completed; maybe to help a friend out, or just for fun but you would not get any rewards. (Same as like now, if you've already completed the Raid or Nightfall, etc you get nothing). Chests can remain, but you only receive materials; metals, blooms, etc but maybe give a more generous amount to add incentive for people to replay sections. Also, maybe add an addition 'marathon' reward for those who complete it in the 'Standard' setting as opposed to 'Matchmaking'. (At least you can initially play matchmaking and you'll then come across some great people, who you talk with and add as friends. Eventually you'll have 6 people and then can attempt it on 'Standard'). I believe that this would really help those who do not have hours to spend in one go and allow them to at least experience one of the best sections of the game. Also, you mentioned that millions of people play Destiny for a few hours a day. Out of interest, how many have completed the Raid on Normal/Hard? Percentage? (You must have stats somewhere). If its quite high then this might be a good solution for people to try it; as the initial 'getting a good team together' is what puts most people off. Not only that, you need to find a 'good team again' when you need to continue the Raid. The people you played with previously may not all be online so its back to lfg sites or standing in the Tower spamming messages to random people. It would at least make the process smoother for the player. The player already has to leave the game to search for team mates and to look at the lore, so at least it remains in the actual game as a feature. Once again, apologies if this has been posted by someone else; but I thought it might be a good idea to consider. Also, as I mentioned this should be an additional option. For those who have a team of six already, they can choose the 'Standard' option and play the Raid like they currently do. (To note as well, if you do an area in 'Standard' and get a reward, then you won't get that reward if you then went into 'Matchmaking' to do the same area. Stops people abusing the system). Lastly, it goes without saying; this should only be considered when the other bugs/issues are fixed. Thanks for reading. EDIT1: Another person mentioned there should also be an "Ability to actually remove people who are a detriment to the group" and 3 reports should result in a ban. Therefore I think there could be a 'vote to kick' mechanism where you go into the roster select the player and select 'Vote to Kick'. There should then be a prompt/pop up on screen showing the individuals name and something like 'xyz has 1 vote to kick'. This could be a temporary ban or if after further discussion it might get abused, maybe leave it out altogether. I think like other games, if you find a 'bad' lobby, you just back out and search again. With the number of players and having split sections/areas, should not be a problem finding a 'good' lobby. (What I meant by abused is; say theres one level 26 and five other are 29s. They may think "lets kick this guy hes no good" and gang up on him using the kick option). Further discussion is needed on this, for the moment we could assume it should be left out. EDIT2: DoktorBoar has made some excellent points in regards to the 'meat' of the Raid: -Modify respawns, revives, chest rewards to reward whole group regardless if who opens it. -Don't wipe whole team at gorgon. Allow respawning. -Teleport players once a player reaches a boss checkpoint to catch everyone up if gets lost or stuck on the maze or platforms. -Hard mode matchmaking could be restricted to 29s that earned a weekly complete on normal -Clan mode (current method) could remain untouched minus fixing the bugs lol! EDIT3: Uriyaal has mentioned that additional search parameters could also be added. I.e. after selecting 'Matchmaking' you could add further options; 'Join Any Game', 'Search for Levels 28+' etc. More ideas are welcome for these options. (I just added it in now and we can discuss further).

I see how this would help certain people, but even with your fail-safes I still think it wouldn't work out too well. I'm sure if good players were matched with other good players then it would probably be alright, but there's always trolls and people AFKing or quitting. Maybe something that would really help cut that down would be to do something similar to GTA. Bad "sports" get put in bad sport lobbies and matchmaking. Even after that, there would be people with no mics, crappy equipment, and lack of experience. Those people grow better with other experienced players. Also, I don't see why the loot system should change. Anyway, I don't care either way as it wouldn't effect me so I mostly agree with you. I say go for it and hope the kinks get worked out with time. Edit: the bad sports could be called Rogue guardians

  • Absolutely. This far into the game, most people are eligible to complete both raids on normal mode. Make matchmaking for normal difficulty as hard mode both aren't meant for any rag tag team thrown together by random. I can understand that. But people who are half a level above me have been speed running hard mode Crota under an hour. tl;dr these raids are no longer extraordinarily difficult and matchmaking for normal difficulty should be implemented.

  • Please no matchmaking. The reasons for why it's a horrible idea are numerous. Use the forums or destinylfg.net to find a raid group

    • This is a great idea. I'm desperate to do the raid, but no way I can set aside the time to run it in one go. A solution like this would open up what I hear is the best part of the game to people like me. I have a baby at home who's teething. It's hard enough running a strike, let alone attempting the raid and running the risk of letting people down. Please consider this idea Bungie - it is the best I've seen yet because it allows those who want to put their own team together that option, whilst offering access to players like myself. Everyone wins.

        • U think people complain now? wait till you match make with a bunch of newbies who've never done the raid before. The raid needs to stay exactly how it is

          • Not gonna happen. Just shut up and try to find a clan or group like the rest of us. Good God this is annoying already

            • Excellent idea! The current method for completing raids makes it almost impossible to complete, or even start, for many people who don't have the same exact schedule as their friends. For people who have a daytime job, it can be very difficult for them to find time to get 5 of their friends online simultaneously to even try out the raid. Matchmaking for the raid would make this a whole lot easier for that user group, and allow more people to experience that piece of the game. I think the suggestions you have to add this in are perfect too. Adding it in as an option in addition to the standard allows people who just want to go in with their current fireteam the ability to do that without getting bogged down by strangers and get a higher reward because of it. Hope this makes it in. Thanks for the great post!

Just keep the same setup as now, chests, enemies etc. (the loot is still in the chest even if its opened prior) 3 or so checkpoints (each after a major fight) with a return to checkpoint 1 on completion, 30 minute time out on purposefull exit to orbit, match only same levels to match experience as best able. Selectable matchmade or non-matchmade. People can still do the current method of raiding, no one is forcing them to do anything different. At leastlet people who don't do it now to have a go and who knows, make some friends or adopt the 'traditional' method Edit:context

            • This is an important conversation that I feel Bungie would do best to not dismiss. It seems that the are a lot of good reasons to do it, and only a few chances that it may go wrong. Many of the arguments against matchmaking seem to be cynical speculation, which is incongruent with how Bungie praises the community. Are we the altruistic wonderful and selfless guardians they talk about, or a pirates den of filth like it seems like they treat us. We've only just been afforded the privilege of talking to the people were playing with. I find that ridiculous. Bungie seems to be aware that players enjoy a challenge based on how often they reference dark souls. So why not let the new guys try it. I promise if they open matchmaking I'll be there, helping groups through the vault. I'd like to do that now, but jumping into raids is pretty tedious, and although I get there are times I get barraged with invites it's usually when I don't have time to commit to a raid (getting invites is not the typical experience when trying to first get onto the raid, to be clear). Improve access, every guardian deserves a shot at Atheon, just give them an honest effort.

                  • agreed with every thing except vote to kick options, to easy to abuse it. some folks even use it just to kick "noobs" ranking system already in place for 21-30 since you can only attain levels via gear. I would suggest adding additional stats for search parameters such as with VoG "Void weapons required for secondary and special weapons."

                    • Great idea. I dont know the age that Destiny was marketed to but as you can see by my gamer tag im close to 30. I am able to play for a few hours every couple of days. I have never attempted the Vault of Glass. This is due to not having enough friends with enough time to start the beast of task. I completely understand why they would make it friends only since it takes so long and if you get stuck with people that back out after a few minutes your screwed. I believe this article fixes all problems that would be encountered. And even if it doesn't at least I would have the option to try it. Thanks for the great post it would really help people in similar situations
