Clans Expanded (Communication, Headquarters, Vehicle, Dropship, Activities, Assets)

This topic will perhaps be the most far reaching (for implementation and design) of all those in this series and only a few sections of it could possibly be added to Destiny [1], so consider much of this as what could be done for the 2015 Destiny 2 release. As with all of the topics in the series the details are not the point, they are only provided to allow understanding of an idea. Clans in the game are in dire need of some constructive and useful tools, a depth of involvement and some in game meaning/rewards. First some things that need immediate attention Clan Communication: An in-game text and voice communication system for and between clan members needs to be developed as soon as possible. If Bungie does not want the general population of players to communicate this is fine (actually not, but we can give them that if they can take this step). The issues of behavior and censorship for public communications are dramatically reduced when you are talking or communicating among members of the same clan – these people choose to be together and need to be able to communicate without a third-party system. Clan Activities: Clans can contain a maximum (or so I understand) of 100 members, yet the most you can put together, and that for just one event, is 6 members. Outside of the raid, only 3 members can run together – this is not conducive to “clan” activities. We need to be able to run in larger groups in more activities to bring more camaraderie and a greater sensation of being a part of something bigger than a fireteam. The possible activities are going to be outlined later, but the need is paramount. Clan Ranking: Other than “admin” – and that only on the website, not actually in the game – there are no in-game mechanics or viable measures to allow a clan to rank their members, to assign merits for achievement or seniority. There needs to be a defined or even customizable list of ranks within the game to set up the clan’s members in a meaningful and useful manner. We will outline how this can be done further on so bear with us. Likewise the new members cannot tell an officer from another new member unless they are on the website – this is just another item that takes away any immersion in a game that already has too little of it to speak of – In-game ranking would also assist in this, simple identification of the clan’s officers or leaders. This next portion will either outline avenues to achieve the three subjects above or provide ideas that strengthen or expand on the relationship of clans or how they can be used in the game to help expand the experience. Again, the idea is relative, not the specifics as presented. Clan Headquarters: There are two ways to approach this, the popular “the tower needs a clan hall” idea or one that actually allows the developers a chance to really take this to another level and offer the clans some real substance. The tower idea limits what can be done unless upon entering it you are phased into another zone where the headquarters exists, removing the immersion of being in the tower. However, if they added the Clan Headquarters to the planetary map, then the clans could choose which world they wanted their HQ on and a new icon would appear there that they click to travel to, just like any other instance or event. The developers could simply put in an exterior panoramic loading screen for each hall so that it represented the world selected and where possible, allow for a “window” image of the realm outside the hall when looking through any viewports. This location would be selected upon creating the clan in-game and would cost (for sake of example) marks to move to another world. Clan Terminal: Within the headquarters there would be a terminal that allows access to the various clan functions, accessed and limited by rank rights set up by the clan admin. Here are some examples of what the terminal might provide; Admin functions (set rank, see last log-in date, accept/remove member, select Clan Emblem, Select Clan shader (these two are selected from a preset list of options/themes), set/select HQ assets [detailed below], set bulletin board message, etc.) Member functions (view roster, bulletin board, member details, clan achievements). Clan Salvage: This is a new aspect for the Clan HQ, which could be represented by an NPC – the Clan quartermaster. Members could use the vender to salvage gear which is then added to the Clan pool for use with acquiring Clan Assets and other items. The player gets no return as an individual for the item and anything that it is converted into goes into a Clan Salvage bank. Likewise Clan members could also donate currency here to help the Clan purchase additional Clan Assets. Clan Assets: These are all the things that the clan can earn within the game. Assets would include achievement banners that are displayed within the HQ (along say a trophy hall as hanging banners, trophy cases, statuary, plaques, etc depending on the actual achievement). Along with special assets that are purchased through a new vender (or give that shader girl the material so she has more purpose) in the tower using either current currency and a donation option for members to pool their resources, or a new HQ specific currency that is earned by accomplishing Clan specific goals and completing events – these special assets would include items such as; A Clan Dropship: The loading screen would change from the current individual ships to this larger version that carries all the transported members to their next objective – an interior shot of the active group within the ship would be stellar. This ship would require the clan to collect and turn in a large quantity of ships for the material to construct as well as an investment in the selected currency. This now gives a use for all the ships we are getting and for lack of vault space, destroying without return, as well as making the construction feasible with the stories lack of resources theme – see Clan Salvage above. Activities (new missions) could be created to acquire special materials needed to complete construction that were not a part of the smaller ships and that cannot be purchased with the existing or new currency – Vex or Cabal technology comes to mind. Clan Vehicles: This would start off with a two-man vehicle; a driver and a gunner (rear facing with a swivel mounted weapon) and over time include others. As with the dropship; an economical cost, a salvage/donations cost and completion of specific acquisition tasks would be required to attain it. In time custom sparrows should be made available (blueprints could drop and old sparrows salvaged to create the new clan version), along with other items of this nature. Clan HQ Interior Dressing: These are items that can be purchased or earned that are placed into the HQ for visual effect and limited customization. They can be simple features, or possibly as complex as a shooting range or tactical simulator - allowing replay of segments of a strike or raid for training. These are but a few examples, I am sure that most of you can suggest many, many more that you’d like to see but for the sake of keeping this as short as possible that is all I will initially list under the category. Clan Activities: The final portion of this is creating instances and activities that bind the clan together. Here are a few ways that this could be done, again the specifics are not the point. Clan vs Clan PvP: A new class of instance that pits one clan against another with success bestowing renown, or awards that can be used in the clan HQ. The Tower would present a Renown Board indicating Clan PvP Ranking. The top Clan in PvP would have a special banner flying in their HQ - perhaps even the flaming banner as seen in IB. Clan Patrols: new patrol missions that require at least (or up to) 6 members. There seems to be some reason to limit the groups to this number so we will not ask for much more for now, but larger more involved instances need to be created. While expanding the number of players able to run the patrols also randomize (we know how you all love that) the spawn points and number/types of opponents during these patrols to ease the feeling of repetition and predictability. Clan Presence: Clan members should spawn with other clan members when entering the tower or have an option other than joining their fireteam to appear with them. Clan Trading: There are two ways to approach this and we will speak about the most likely to be done one first; allow clan members to trade same class items DURING an event (Raid/Strike). While we would love to see open trading at any time among clan members we doubt that will occur, so here is how we think you can make at least the aforementioned one work. Any clan member can trade another clan member a same class item (legendary for legendary, exotic for exotic). This idea may make a few people unhappy but we understand the need to contain displacement of gear, and this method allows for limited trade. In that at least clan members can trade duplicate gear, or non-class gear to another player that also has something that they cannot use rather than salvaging both pieces. As you can see there is a lot of potential here for the clans to grow into something truly defining and awesome. I look forward to hearing more ideas (which when applicable will be added to the list and credited to you) that would help build upon this. • What if clans were connected to factions? Like when you complete a clan bounty it gives you co for your clan to rank up and it ranks up in the faction your clan is involved in. For example: Light of the Traveler: Dead Orbit clan
