Why The Black Garden's Heart Had to be Destroyed

Yeah, seems reasonable!

272

No. I don't really think so

I've seen a video or two that showed concept art of the Black Garden. Beneath the grass and flowers and the rest, you can see a white ground. The surface looks curved, as if it were inside of a sphere. What's the traveler? A giant, white, sphere. I think that the Vex may have used their ability to teleport and teleported inside the traveler, where they then corrupted it, thus leaving it dormant. When you go to destroy the heart of the Black Garden, everything around you looks drab. Once you destroy the heart, everything is bright and beautiful. By destroying the heart, you released the traveler from its dormant state. But that's just my theory. Tell me what you think below, and like it, as well. If you disagree, please tell me why! I appreciate all feedback! Thanks for reading! EDIT 1. Saw this in the comments. Cuddos, Adhock!
....Actually not a bad theory. We don't know when the Vex found the Black Heart exactly (and since they travel though time it doesn't seem to matter) and the Darkness is made up of the negative aspects of the Universe. One of which would have been corruption. So who's to say that during it's fight with the Darkness, in the Darkness's own last ditch attempt to kill the Traveler, it infected it to keep it asleep while it bought time to collect itself to come back and finish the job. The Vex with their ability to travel through time probably came from the past because it would have been easier to being the long building process then. (Time being fluid and pointless to them since they can lock things out of time) and with the Traveler out cold, it can't stop the infection of both the Vex and the miasma. Guardians act as the white blood cells to the Traveler clearing out the infection and letting the Traveler heal.
• Option 3: I have no -blam!-ing clue why the heart needed to be destroyed. Really. Apparently it was something to do with the Vex but I have no idea if it was an evil force or what it even was or did. The game just told me to kill it so I did. GG Destiny story.

  • I agree that based on early black garden concept art, it is most likely that at some point in development, the garden was in fact inside the traveler. There have been lots of rumors of significant revisions to the story late in the development process, and I honestly don't think the theory fits very well in the current version of the story. However, I won't totally discount the possibility of new developments in future content that make the theory more plausible within the story as it stands now.

    • It says in the game that Vex Gate Lords "protect the realms the Vex keep locked out of time." I think the Black Garden is one of those places, since you need the eye of a Gate Lord to get in. Once you destroy the black heart it comes back into normal time.

    • If you think about it. The vex never can be truly defeated if they can travel through time Could they not have the battle with the traveler then Keep going back in time til they won Or they might have realized it was better to get the traveler on their side or something so they corrupted it

    • Those are all really good theories but I have one question. If somehow we are inside the traveler how is it when after the heart is destroyed that we are in the same spot but the ghost says that we are back on Mars? It seemed to me that for a time we were in some strange place in between time and space during the time after we pass threw the portal. After we beet the three copied bosses we are just brought back to our same time and space where it turned out to be on mars the whole time

      • The original story was supposed to be better the traveler was supposed to be a bad guy probably for that reason he was supposed to be the one who brought the darkness but they canned the lead guy that was doin the story and it fell apart and that's why the story is so choppy and some missions imply that you had done something but you didn't exclusion zone and some just don't seem to fit in with the others arkion priest and most strikes

          • Only problem, once you destroy the heart doesn't your ghost say that you're on Mars? Yet you haven't left the garden. Seems reasonable but I don't think this is right. Still, voted reasonable.

The real reason that black heart was needed to be destroyed is because destiny has no heart.
As we awoke from slumber the little ghost told that "There will be alot you don't understand" and as time progressed and now at the conclusion of 'destiny's initial' story..there wasn't even a single occurrence where the players (us) were told besides "I wish i could tell you but.." . The fact remains that we weren't told anything within the game (besides the intro of course)..so its best to assume that destiny is heartless now considering that we actually destroyed its heart.
It's ridiculous that the motivations for the final battle in this game even need to be debated. This just shows how poorly the story was written. Any other video game spends the entire game setting up the final encounter with whatever lies at the end. What other games are as unclear as Destiny as to why you're fighting the final boss. edit: I like your theory though. It's pretty good, makes me sad it's not included in the game.

                      • It seems reasonable, but if you look upward while at the start of the garden, there is a rocky red roof, indicating you are somwhwere under Mars, this is also indicated by the Ghost saying "we're back on mars" You could be right though, but reading through the grimoire of the Vex, black garden, and heart, it feels like that the heart, whatever it was, was just the first, and there are others of its kind, possibly stronger.

                      • Rumors originally put the Black Garden "inside" the traveler. But it always looked like below Mars (red roof) or Venus (overall architecture) to me.
