item based "skill" Destinys Achilles heel

So I have been taking a break from destiny, and finally a friend got the game, which is great, because all my other friends left destiny or went next gen. I think plenty of people have pointed out the similarities it has to WoW in some respects. This is also where I see the (forgive me) "doom" of this game. Let me explain: Leveling up. Item based. All damage is item based. Defense. Everything, really. You can max out both skill trees without any thought. The ultimate goal is gear, and this gear may or may not ever be yours. It's not like there are many alternatives to the best weapons. A couple will sit at the top, along with the lone set of armor. Iron banner illustrates exactly what you get when the game comes down to who has been lucky and those who have not. Pvp, pve...there's no difference as far as gear requirements. There are no sacrifices and there is no strategy. Wish you would have picked a different skill? Np, change at any time. There can be no balance in a game that relies solely on item stats. There's no one option in getting some items. You go do a certain thing, and hope like hell you get lucky. This in itself wouldn't be so bad, but there are no equalizing forces to the primes. Destiny borrows a bit from WoW, yes, but it borrowed just enough to be broken. People WILL give up on it. There needs to be consequences to every decision. Instead, if your lucky, you truly will have your cake and eat it too. Despite all this I enjoy this game. The world they created. It's just wearing a little thin and I hope they can bring depth to this world.

  • The main difference is WoW has a ton of content for EVERYONE. You want to solo PVE and do it to max level? Go have fun and do it. You want to just play pvp and battlegrounds to max level? Well sure you can do that to! You want to just make it to end game as fast as possible and reach max level just to raid and do dungeons? Go right ahead. An MMO and most MMO style games allow their players to dictate how they experience the game, something Bungie missed here big time. Instead they try to force you to play it their way, you can't hit max level without playing the raid, most of the exotic bounties require PVP components, no matchmaking for the Nightfall strikes, etc. I firmly believe a lot of this was done due to the lack of content in the game, they want to make it last as long as possible, which is why you see stories of level 29s playing the Raid for a month and still haven't received that last armor piece to hit level 30. Everything in this game is based on RNG and after a while that tends to wear out your playerbase. Even in the most difficult MMOs there is a set path to obtaining your end game gear that doesn't require you playing the same content 100 times over in the hopes you'll get a drop. MMOs most often have marks and currency you acquire for doing special tasks and end game content, and while there is often a cap to it, you can at least acquire the currency and buy your end game gear whether it be for PVP or PVE.
