Update: Fixes for Disconnects, HAWK, CATERPILLAR, OTHER

So a while ago I posted a thread detailing the ongoing problem many Gamers are having maintaining a connection to the Bungie servers. You can find it all in the link attached. In that post I describe more in detail what I am going to talk about below. Read it, like it, share it, toast it with your heartiest wine... Then come here for the final solution. I am on the 360, and played just fine (like all of you) until perhaps 2 weeks ago. Constant disconnects of all animals plagued me. So I hit the forums and read up on the internets to see what was going on. Learned a lot, laughed a bit, cried some, and finally fixed it. The Problem: A node is down. Now we can point fingers and say the Bungie should re-direct their traffic to an alternate route, but I don't work there and I don't know what that would involve for them. Perhaps it is expensive, or time consuming, or (for all I know) impossible. But in addition to Bungie using PTP to enable Gamers to play together, the Node is almost certainly broken. When the Disconnects Happen The Disconnects occur almost always in public spaces, though not exclusively. A public space, like Patrol or the Tower, requires a certain type of network connection to maintain. This type puts an enormous strain on your router and modem, and most 2-in-1 boxes cannot handle that (more on that later). Sadly, most story missions and strikes start out in the public space, so before you can Sparrow your way into the Dark Zone (once respawning is restricted you are no longer in the public space...usually) you get disconnected. Solutions In my post I outline what you can do to troubleshoot and why you need to do it. Here I will tell you how I finally fixed it for myself. I had all the animals in the magical kingdom in my collection of error codes. So I switched from UPnP to DMZ, then again from DMZ to Port Forwarding. Again read my other post to know what these mean and more about them. This fixed all but 2 pesky codes. Caterpillar and Hawk remained, and in addition I was disconnected from LIVE. But upon returning to the title screen, and checking my connection, I was still signed in. So I then called my ISP and tried to ask them to re-route me. Bungie could re-route all traffic to them but I don't know what that would look like, or the ISP can re-route just you. Problem is...they don't generally know what that means. You need to speak with a Technician, and even if you find someone who understands you, they still won't want to do it (against Policy). After spending more time than I care to admit talking to COMCAST and getting no response, I finally moved to the last step. I used a 2-in-1 box that the ISP sent when I signed up for internet. This combines a Modem with a Router, and sadly under performs for both. The unfortunate truth is that the box does not work well enough, for this game in particular. Other games do not use the public spaces we talked about earlier, or they do not use PTP in the way that Bungie does. The combination of these two things, and the broken Node, is too much for my little-box-that-could to handle. So I put the Modem in Bridge Mode (same place you go to mess with port forwarding etc.) and connected a new router. Once I set it all up and plugged it in...problem solved. The good news is that my entire home network is faster now (and safer!), due to the new router (and modem which is optional but does help too). All my devices and apps work better and my entire system benefited from the hardware update. BUT (this is a big butt, and not the good kind from all those rap-music songs either) it costs money. For a good router it costs a good amount of money. If you do not have a spare router lying around, then you have to go buy one. For me, I wanted to upgrade my home network anyway, so I was not buying a router for 1 game. For a lot of you that may not be the same. I believe that in the next few years we will see an increase in this type of network communication, and while the Nodes will hopefully be fixed (something that only the ISPs can do, and is very, VERY expensive) if we are connecting on outdated, cheaply-made hardware then we will simply not be able to play smoothly. So in short, if you are ready to upgrade your system and you want to connect to Destiny without interruption, then you need a separate Router and Modem, not the 2-in-1 that you get by default. If you have any more questions just send me a message.
