Just a suggestion I came up with as I was grinding away some crucible that sounded fun so I worked on the idea more and chatted it over with some friends that play...
Imagine this:
A planet we fly to while representing one of the warring factions where all elites are spawned that give lower xp and drops of course but we are presented with static areas on the map that need to be captured and held 24/7 by that faction rewarding points to each player currently active in that time slot. The points will constantly be assaulted by NPC elites and whichever faction players decide to jump at the opportunity to net their faction more land control.
You consolidate these points earned and exchange them in for rewards. Example would be X number of points = Y number of crucible marks or some new currency where you can purchase whatever. I'd say loot chests or engrams. Something like a lottery as it'd be farmable so the rewards shouldn't be too overpowered but still worth the gamble.
I guess the idea came from other fps style games such as Planetside but I think it'd be a very interesting addition and certainly keep the play value for some. I fully expect others to hate the idea as it's not everyone's style gameplay.
When I first thought of this I had the idea to split the guardians along the story and give people the opportunity to "leave" the light aide becoming lost guardians or dark guardians. Just another thought.
