So, whose fault is it really?

Activision

Bungie

Or is it the writer who left?

Did Activision stop Bungie from making the game they wanted to make? Or is it all Bungies fault and Bungies fault alone? Or is it the writer who left leaving us with a lame story?

  • The writer leaving caused the story to be shit. The writer left because of Activision. Bungie decided to deal with Activision. I blame Activision the most, Bungie partially, and the writer not at all.

  • My best guess, is that Bungie was running out of time, and finishing Destiny the way they intended, was probably going to take more time/money and they would lose profit for missing another release date. High level/Bungie made a deal with High level/Activision. To gut everything in Destiny except the gameplay, including story content to achieve these 3 likely scenarios, all revolving around being a money driver, rather than delivering the original artistic vision:
1) Keep parity to legacy hardware, so last gen owners don't feel left out and buy the game. This drives sales. 2) Aggressively pursue a "Teen" rating. Db everything down to a "10 year old level." Level the playing field, keep loot random and remove trading/gambling. This drives sales as kids will be more likely to play. 3) Chop the game's story into dreaded DLC model. The entire story of Destiny is probably spread over 4 games by now.
What kind of writer would stay with Bungie after being told their masterpiece was being gutted into shit, to conform to the above likely scenarios? Nobody. That's why he left.

  • I would wager that it was moreso Activision than Bungie. Granted we all know that Bungie knew what they were getting into, given Activision's franchises have been falling off considerably, while trying to push out worthless DLC (imo at least). (Note: falling off quality-wise, financially I'm sure they're doing fine) Really though, it's been the gaming industry as a whole- learning from CoD's success, despite its reskinned games year in and year out. What they've learned is that they can invest less into a Game's development, release complete trash, and we the consumer continue to gobble it up like its great. In that sense, its our own fault for being so easily preyed upon. Complacent with the repetition, ignoring the lack of ingenuity that used to be the heart of game development. In that regard, i had hopes for Destiny. Hopes that it would be the last game I'd ever need to purchase. Alas, such was not the case. Worse yet, Bungie is relying on DLC to complete the game. It's over-hyped trash like this that is causing the consumer to lose faith entirely. The beckoning of DLC are just further slaps to the consumers face. Of course, there are those of you who are utterly complacent, so used to the other garbage titles you've played that Destiny seems like its great. You're welcome to feel that way, but, if you can honestly say that Destiny has lived up to the hype, well... you must not have been following too closely.

    • It's all Bungie since they agreed to let Activision run the show more or less and create the worst and most expensive game ever.

    • Both Activision and Bungie. Common sense.

    • Seems like activision, because Bungie has made many games, and none of them have ever tried to pull the kind of bull that destiny has been pulling on us...

    • Bungie didn't have to team up with Activision. So if it's anyone's fault, it's theirs.

      • It's Activision's fault for the game that was released with minimal content. It's Bungie's fault we are still sitting here with that same mediocre content. Obviously no one in Bungie has the nuts to tell Activision they're ruining their franchise by being greedy. By withholding content and slowly releasing it they are going to kill the franchise. Bungie would be better off explaining that releasing more now would help keep people around and make DLC later enticing to the consumer. This as I said before takes some nuts but clearly no one in Bungie is equipped with a big enough pair to fight for their work. Instead of fighting for what they worked so hard on they'll sit here and watch it go down in flames just to keep their contract. It's unfortunate since this game still has so much potential to be great. Unfortunately the only people fighting for it is the community. Cruel business world and the greed it's fueled by is winning this round.

        • This is also what happens when you go "public" you now have to constantly grow even though you have over saturated the market...in an attempt to please you cry baby stock holders who actually deserve NOTHING for hedging their bets towards you(nobody made them, but their dirty little greed)

        • Maybe Bungie is at fault for creating unrealistic time frames for themselves and expectations for the consumer or maybe Activision is at fault for not budging on those time frames to allow for more content or budgeting better. Who knows, but they are both probably at fault, in one way or another.

          • Bungie made a conscience decision to sleep with Activision knowing they are the Ebola of publishers (slowly liquefy your insides until you are nothing but a dead shell). If Bungie chose not to wear a full body condom, that is their own fault. #NOSYMPATHY #EMOKIDSRUINEVERYTHING

          • I'm all for saying it is Activision's Fault. Look at Call of Duty each year, same maps, same mechanics, different guns which act the same. They need to look back at the Tony Hawk Pro Skater Series to remember where they came from. The minute I have seen that name is was infuriated. They are almost like the LJN gaming company to me now.
