An Open Letter to Bungie: The One About Progress

Dear Bungie, I have been playing Destiny since launch (feel free to check my PSN profile, it is of the same name). I thoroughly enjoy the game, and this past weekend, I got my Warlock to level 30. Want to know what I did then? I stopped playing. At least, I stopped playing as much as I used to, and by a significant amount. At first, I thought you (Bungie) had an interesting work around for keeping things interesting after reaching the level cap. I have since discovered you've made a lot of the old mistakes games like Diablo 3 (at launch) made. Once you hit 30, there's not much reason to keep playing. 1. There isn't enough high level content/rewards: - We were told that Nightfall activities were going to come in 2 flavors, Daily and Weekly. Where is the Daily Nightfall? Also, we need better rewards than Ascendant Materials for our hard work. Once we hit 30 and have several weapons maxed out, Ascendant Materials don't mean as much as a new Legendary weapon. Which leads to my next point... 2. Reward system is poorly tuned for high level play: - The rewards for activities are tuned to facilitate the (slow) progression grind on your way to hitting 30. But what then? Typically, in an RPG, you would continue the grind for better gear to continue character progression. This drive would be what keeps you coming back day after day. However, Legendary drops are WAY too few and far between. I have a lot of Legendaries with perks I don't like, but it would take months of playtime to get a random drop to replace just ONE of them so I can get a reroll of its perks. The idea of grinding the same 6 missions for weeks on end just to get a different version of my Auto Rifle (which will do the same damage) just doesn't strike me as sufficient reward for the invested effort. Which leads to my main point... 3. PvE needs more content/activities, and some of that PvP TLC you've been dishing out: - Bungie, by now you must have noticed many of your early adopters are not playing as often, or for as long, as they used to even just a few weeks ago. I lost several raid members to the temptation of hunting Uruks in Middle-Earth. If you think they left because of game balance or tuning, or because the Mythoclast was just too strong, that would be incorrect. After weeks of beating the Weekly Heroic and Nightfall Strikes, pummeling the Heroic Daily story missions, and grinding out Marks which are good for little more than buying gear to Shard and buff our Raid gear... Well, we've run out of stuff to do. The Queen's wrath event, while fun, wasn't enough. You need to give us a reason to keep going. We need a sense of progression beyond the Soft AND Hard level caps. And we're REALLY FRIGGIN' TIRED of nerfs intended to balance the PvP side of the game messing with our PvE experience!!! Please, stop nerfing PvE. Buff us all you like, but stop punishing us because PvPers can't learn to back away from the Guardian with the Shotgun! (Side Note: and even with the shotgun range nerf, I am STILL schooling those crybabies because they never learned the concept of retreat!) My suggestions: - Give us a Daily Nightfall. Rewards should include an increased chance for a Legendary/Exotic item. I'm talking a 1 in 3 chance for a purple drop. - Hitting level 30 (or whatever the hard level cap becomes, as I'm sure future DLC will bump it up) should MASSIVELY increase the drop rate for Legendary Engrams. This should be our reward for hitting the cap. This will allow us to tune our arsenal to our liking instead of being stuck with the few lucky drops we get, or what we purchase from the Vanguard/Xur. - Alternatively, Motes of Light should be usable to reroll perks on weapons, and/or stats on Raid Gear (where the perks are locked). We need more control over our equipment so we can get the experience that fits our style. (Edit: the above suggestion may only be fair if it applies to dropped weapons, and not ones purchased from any of the Vanguard/Faction venders. When paired with my suggestion of an increase drop rate of legendaries at level 30 - and the Daily Nightfall - it would encourage a push to get to 30 and keep playing.) - Motes of Light should be able to purchase buffs for our character. In Diablo 3, they created the Paragon system to continue progression beyond the level cap. The Motes should be exchangeable for stat boosts for our character to further tune how they play. If I want to buy Discipline, Strength, or Intelligence, I should be able to do that with Motes of Light. The exchange rate shouldn't be high (maybe 3-5 points per Mote), and the purchased points should be flexible (meaning, if I get new gear, I can take the points out of what stat I put them in and re-allocate them). You'll notice that none of the above suggestions are asking for new missions, new strikes, or new maps. These are adjustments that can be made with a patch/update. On a final note, I do have another request. In Halo, I could replay missions with skull modifiers on for fun. It wasn't like I got anything special for doing it, but it was interesting to see the same mission play so differently because of the modifiers. I want that option back. Let us play story missions and select our own level and modifiers (Epic, Arc Burn, Light Switch, etc.). I don't want to earn rewards for doing this (beyond the standard exp and drops from the mobs) I just want to have fun without you TELLING ME how I can have it. This would also greatly benefit you, Bungie, because you'd be able to track which modifiers are used most often and where. Showing popular builds and perhaps opening the door for a Daily Community Challenge. Every day you could take a popular Story Mission (with it's most popular mod setup) and assign rewards like Rep and Engrams. My point is, you told us this was going to be "our story, our game". Maybe it's time to start showing us that by letting us play with it. Thank you for you time. Sincerely, A Fan

  • Self-bump. Mainly because I don't want to re-type this whole thing. I wrote this copy on my smart phone.

  • Stats for motes of light? Count me in! I would love that! Especially with reallocation as well (an absolute must). Right now, the only strenght I have comes from my armor (69, haha), while Intellect is around 160 and Discipline is around 240. I really need to boost strenght more, and even more so if I am to use the dumb raid armor (which has a whooping 130 disc (and pulse rifle ammo. I only use hand cannons)). This is so needed in Destiny!

    • I hear you man. i,m a big fan of Bungie's past titles. big big fan. but this game started off great and fell slowly into monotony and boredom. My own addition (im sure many will agree): A little MMO grindy grindy rinse repeat is ok, that's expected. This extent is not expected. When the level of your character is based on gear, the gear rewards cannot be based on luck, maybe we should be able to purchase raid gear with earned "raid tokens" or something similar to purchasing faction gear (the possible improvements seem limitless). just don't make me do it over and over but only have access once a week, that's just cheap Bungie, a cheap way to compensate for lack of content and slow people down. Level should be based on experience, not the luck of the draw. it just totally goes against the philosophy of a leveling system. which is to represent a players experience and skill with the game. also separate crucible leveling would be cool.

      • Main problem here is that they are still treating us paying customers, the ones who could potentially buy the DLC, like beat testers, or worse lab rats. Is this some grand experiment?

          • Same exact thing happened to me once I hit 30. I do the nightfall and hard raid once at the beginning of the week and I'm done with the game the rest of it. What am I suppose to do? You dont get anymore rewards for redoing the raid or nightfall. All other modes rewards are worthless to my character. I have the exotic bounties done. There's no reason to play past tuesday. The next time I jump on is friday to see what's up with Xur. I don't mind there are other things to play, just dont expect me to buy your dlc.

              • Very well said. As with many posts like this, I sincerely hope Bungie reads (and even possibly responds, DeeJ) as well as giving us an idea, or hope even that we will be able to play in this vast expanding universe they claimed it to be. I preordered this game because of the vast possibilities and areas to explore. I was looking forward to longevity and finding new things to do on a regular basis. And by regular basis I do not mean dlc every few months. That's just ridiculous. I truly do hope my interest gets peaked very soon and I start to enjoy this game like I used to.

Thanks for the feedback, all. It has been unimaginably positive. In fact, I'm so shocked that no one seems to want to troll this post that I keep waiting to be named prom queen moments before all the popular kids pour pigs blood on me. While this open letter isn't everything I think the game needs to change, I feel these additions would add greatly to the overall experience and keep people engaged for longer. If you agree, please spread the word. Refer this forum post to others, get the player base talking. Let see if Bungie is really interested in serving their community.

                • Yep. Awesome post. My hunter hit 30 last week and i can vouche... played a lot less after hitting that point. Fully agree that there's not enough high-end content that's keeping me here. I have two more characters that need raid gear. Wont be much longer now
