There's no motivation to do well in the crucible, or play the crucible at all really. With crucible drops being random and not requiring any skill at all to get it really just feels pointless to me. Sure there's the competitive aspect, but is it really competitive? Killing people just isn't rewarding. I get no more satisfaction from killing a level 5 than I do when I kill a level 30, so what's the point in trying at all?
If they did put in a ranking system here's how I'd want it to work:
Winning or losing wouldn't affect your rank, only your personal score would. For example getting 1.3+ k/d would increase your rank xp(?). That way your team can't be blamed for you being a low rank. (Or you can't be carried to a higher rank.) Getting 0.7 - 1.2 k/d on average would do nothing as this shows that this is probably the rank in which you belong. Getting a k/d of 0.6- would then take away rank xp. You would of course be matched with players closest to your rank.
Not only would a ranking system like this make the crucible more enjoyable (IMO), and competitive, but it could also help improve a players skill level. By pitting people with the same skill level against each other they have two choices. Get better, or decrease in rank. (because everyone else got better.)
Thoughts? Improvments? Maybe they're already working on this and I just haven't been paying attention?

Sounds good to me

I don't want a global rank. I think it would be more interesting to hold special events and tournaments and have a rank attached to them along with rewards for winning. Normal PvP shouldn't have rank. Make it a special thing

I like this idea. It would be fun and would help players improve by pitting players of similar skill levels against each other. I see how this would work for people going into the crucible solo, but what about teams (like clan nights)? Perhaps they would average the ranks of the team, thoughts?

I've been waiting for 10 years to see the return of a skill based ranking system like in H2. H3 was kinda easy to get a high rank. Maybe I just improved my game, but I doubt it. Lol. I'm willing to bet money this won't ever happen. But goodness, I'd be will to pay that money if I lost the bet!

Strange since Halo had a ranking system. I wonder if Bungie lost that algorithm to MS.

Way I see it, best way to do this would be to use the similar fashion as they did in Halo 3. The rank itself wouldn't effect anything, it would simply exist for bragging rights and bragging rights alone. That way everybody is happy. Players trying to get marks and reputation aren't effected negative in any way, and the elitists will have something new to strive for. Just a thought.
