Tips for doing well in the Crucible

Here are some tips and principles I have found useful for the Crucible. 1. Gather Information - Before the game begins go to the roster and view some of your opponents gear to get an idea of what you are up against. Are they running ARs/Shotguns for some close combat run and gun or do they have a scout/sniper rifle set up for distance? Take note of the classes on the opposing side. If there are a bunch of titans, try staying at a distance to avoid those fists of havoc and shoulder charges. If Hunters, make sure you listen for those supers, Arc Blade and Golden Gun make distinct sounds when activated so once you hear this just turn the other way and avoid them if possible. If they are Warlocks avoid those melee battles because experienced Warlocks will generally win. Also note if people are in a party together. This will give you an idea of the degree of communication and organization on the opposing side. If you notice they are in a group it is a good idea to hold off on the lone wolf run and gun strategy. The more information you have the better off you are. I never heard of people not having enough information when preparing for different situations. 2. Pick your battles - If you see a sniper in the distance and you don't have a sniper do not challenge that player because you will most likely lose. If you know they have heavy machine guns never engage in the open, only engage while behind cover. If you see two people on radar you need to regroup with your team unless you have a heavy weapon. If you are in a gunfight and know you are losing there is no shame in backing out and running for cover. Its better to live for a second try than to simply accept defeat. Also if you and an opponent are near death and your opponent takes off for cover around a corner do not chase as you will likely be met with a grenade or if the opponent keeps running do not chase as they are likely leading you to one of their teammates to be double teamed. 3. Primary Weapon - When choosing weapons I generally look for 3 main stats. I look for weapons with high stability, high impact, and a good rate of fire. I have found range irrelevant for the most part with the current map selection. Reload speed also is not a big factor, there are times a quick reload is helpful but generally you don't need it. Besides, there is usually armor that will boost the reload speed on your primaries anyways. 4. Secondary Weapon - If you like fusion rifles look for quick charge rate, high impact and range. If you like the shotgun you want range and impact, for a sniper look for something with fast fire rate and high stability. 5. Heavy Ammo - As soon as you hear that heavy ammo inbound you immediately need to head to the nearest heavy ammo location. Generally it is a good idea to give teammates 10 seconds to grab some heavy ammo with you but there are exceptions. If there is red on your radar, grab the heavy immediately. If you are with some random teammates and they are being slaughtered frequently by a superior team DO NOT let any of them have heavy ammo, take it for yourself. This sounds selfish but if you allow teammates who are running in and dying you are essentially handing heavy ammo over to the opposing team. 6. Rockets vs Heavy Machine Guns - This depends on the situation. Heavy Machine Guns will always rack up more kills, so if you are in the rumble pit or you are against a lone wolf style team this is the way to go. If you know you are playing against a party or organized team the rocket launcher is the way to go. An organized team will blow you away with rockets before you get the chance to do anything with your heavy machine gun. With rockets you can usually get 1-2 guaranteed kills before being killed. 7. Supers - Some say to use your super when the first guy comes around others say to save it for when you find a large group. I am of the opinion to use it sooner than later so you can start building to the next one but there are also different factors to consider. Sometimes you may want to save it for the heavy ammo spawn to either prevent people from getting it or to kill the people who grabbed it. You also may want to wait until teammates are around you so they can build their supers faster off your orbs. There are also the different game modes such as salvage, control, skirmish etc that may alter how and when you use this. Ultimately there is no defined wrong or right time you just have to make the best judgment you can and use it accordingly. 8. Anticipation/Strategy - Trying to run scenarios and variables through your head while in a game can be hectic but if you get to a point that you can anticipate your opponents next moves and how you will respond you will be much better off. For example: I suspect my opponent will be over here so I will position myself here or my opponent will most likely charge at me so I will do this in response. I don't think this is a concept applied very often, I think most people simply run around with the mind set of shoot this guy before he shoots me and all is good. 9. Composure - There will be those games where you fall behind a couple thousand points and the opposing side are running all over you. The key here is to not become overly frustrated leading to further mistakes. Stay relaxed and try to slow the game down. You may still lose the game but these games are inevitable every once in a while so this is just damage control. Sometimes you may be able to bring the game back and win it. Most importantly have fun with it, after all it is a game. People do better at things when they are relaxed and have fun. Most of these tips are straight forward and basic but they should help anyone new or struggling in the crucible. The rest depends on your reflex and motor skills.
