there's something strange about the dates in Destiny

there's wrecks of cars that look like old fashioned models (by our standards) I found some food packs amongst some cargo lying on the surface of Venus. They were dated 2008 There's a cloak that the speaker sells that's described as a golden age inspired item. It's called The Year 1993. it all sort of indicates that Destiny is not quite rooted in our current timeline. Usually science fiction is set in 'the future' with the unspoken implication that it branched out from present day history. Seems like Bungie have chosen to deviate from this. Why? I'm betting it's something to do with either a) time travelling messing with history b) some certain point in real history that Bungie have pinpointed as a 'what if' moment and decided to split their timeline off from there c) something like many universes with slight differences, or history repeating in a cycle with slight variations
