"Stolen Valor", aka "people who dress up in service uniforms"

http://guardianofvalor.com/michael-r-schrenk-fake-marine-found-erie-county-fair-arrested/ I've seen a couple of stories like this, and find that for many the conduct of the pretender is considered reprehensible. However, for some, their response is "What's the big deal? He's just dressing up." In my opinion, if we're willing to write this sort of activity off as a merely another form of cosplay, then the cosplayers should be prepared for the criticism and response from those who wore and know the intricate details of proper uniform, decorations and conduct. The other side of this is that cosplayers (those who dress up in order to emulate, mimic and show to the world their love and fascination with a particular character or role) don't tell others that they ARE who they are emulating. For the most part, cosplayers aren't trying to convince others that they are anyone other than "a fan who wants to show their love and admiration for a particular persona". I believe the "step too far" and the difference between someone who cosplays as a videogame, anime, or television character (while attending a ____-Con) and the individuals who don a military uniform to attend a military funeral is rooted in the motivations of the person and what they intend to get in response for their effort. Should it be criminal? An interesting discussion and debate. One that I would hope could remain civil, despite the deep and personal passions of those who would argue over it.
Should it be criminal?
Yes, They are pretending to be someone they aren't to receive rewards for actions they did not do. People see you dressed like a cop, they expect you to be a cop. But at this point, no jail time. Confiscation of the impersonating items and a public notice to shame.

    • If the patches, ranks, awards, medals, names, etc are all taken off, they should be left alone. I airsoft using my dads old bdus. I removed all his stuff on them. None of the real military guys I have played with have ever gotten mad at me, even when I wore some of my dads abus with all the patches on. I still didn't like wearing my dad's ranks and patches though. Those are earned, not given.

    • I don't know how I feel about this honestly. One hand, they didn't go through the war and all the gruesome acts of war. Other hand, they are sorta just dressing up. I mean if its just to dress up and not seriously act as one who was in the military..yeah..thats fine. But if you are trying to receive respect and praise for something you didn't earn, especially when dressing up as a man or women who protected his country..good time in jail could let you think on why it's wrong.

          • If you partake in privileges given to military members, sure, it should be illegal. Otherwise, it should be as legal as burning a flag is. That said, I have nothing against a person who dons a military uniform with the intention of acting like a soldier when s/he isn't being universally hated.

          • Yes it should be illegal. They did not earn those medals. They did not earn the right to wear the uniform. So therefore they deserve no respect and should be named and shamed. Dave Pearce and Mathew Lambert were my brothers who have the ultimate sacrifice. Being Australian I do not expect anyone on here to know who they are. But I will not tolerate people pretending to be or pretending to have done what they have done, what we did. Anyone else here who has served will share the same outrage and disgust I have for people who play "dress ups". Anyone who has lost someone in those circumstances will too. If you want to wear the uniform adorned with medals sign on the dotted line. Otherwise you are just a tool who needs their teeth kicked in.

              • I think it should be illegal. I'm no patriot, but I think it's highly disrespectful. I mean wearing a uniform like that to a con or Halloween is one thing, but to a funeral service or a military function? Hell no. If they are such a fan of whatever country or branch, than support them the right way.

                • I don't see anything wrong with it if they're just cosplaying or dressing up for Halloween or just dressing up for the -blam!- of it. The only time I would see a problem is when they try to use their costumes to take advantage of the system or people in general. (Them getting free shit or whatever)

                • They should probably be put in an insane asylum. Anyone who would willingly impersonate a member of the USM AKA the legion of corporate oppression for recognition is mad.
Should it be criminal?
I thought it was? It is definitely a dishonorable thing to do. The people who wear the uniform earned that right. If someone is wearing a military uniform for material gain then he or she should be punished criminally, otherwise no.

To claim the uniform and decorations are your own is deceitful and unprincipled and ought to be socially condemned but it should not be illegal in my opinion. I can appreciate both sides of this argument (not something I do often). Playing dress-up? Cool. Playing dress-up and claiming to be something you aren't? Uncool. Playing dress-up and claiming to be in a position which gives you actual authority over others (such as a police officer)? Enough to merit illegal status. That's how I see it.

                      • No that's stupid. Like that guy wearing the shirt that says "9-11 was a lie" sure he comes off as insensitive, but hell let him wear it. The same this person can wear the uniform, Now if he goes around and says he's in and that's all his, Give him the stink eye but don't arrest the damn guy, he's not breaking any law and is just purely being scum.

                        • I agree that there is a difference between impersonating and cosplaying (dressing up as, etc). As far as a crime? Yes and no. I don't believe playing a distasteful form of dress up in itself should be crime-worthy. But if you take a broader look, there are many laws on the books which prevent impersonation for monetary gain (this could be seen in the form of military discounts, benefits, etc) and impersonation of a government employee.

                            • It honestly saddens me. Coming from a guy who's had three generations of his family serve in the Airforce. I understand what it means to wear those uniforms and how much it takes to get them and claiming you deserve it even if you didn't serve is more unhonorable then begging for money from a beggar.
