Honest Feedback on: Destiny Feedback

TL:DR - Why hasn't Bungie fixed/changed/added [insert thing here] already!? This is why: 41 unfilled positions. Personal opinion follows...
"Destiny initially captivates all of us with its fantastic graphics, solid and sharp combat..." ~Kovathos
That plus the audio, and you've effectively covered everything about the public-facing portion of this game that fell into Bungies core competence. The background game engine is slick, modular, and designed to be altered, updated on the fly, and to forgive the inevitable developmental missteps and mistakes. They built tools, oh so many tools. They talked about how they can whip up new new content in a hurry...you can see why, if you're paying attention to objects in the world...all the loot is modular, both visually and ability-wise; a piece of armor is like a lego kit, ditto ships and weapons. But ask yourselves why they stopped shy of polishing that customization tool and presenting it to us in-game so that we could help them build the world we want to see. It's the next logical step towards making us "fall in love with loot". Why didn't they do it? They told us early on that they had to redesign the company itself to attempt to make and support this game. For some people that was exciting. For some it was a warning sign that there were going to be a lot of things Bungie was going to try to do that they really had no experience with, and that means a lot of opportunities to take bad design advice, or misunderstand/ignore/fail to implement the good advice. Look back at the early stuff they shared...they publicly talked about the fact that they didn't have anyone on staff that even knew how to animate and design hair. It sounds trivial, but every time you have to expand your core competence list by learning how to do something new, or hire a dedicated specialist or experienced generalist to make a particular chunk of your vision a reality, it reduces the time and resources that you have to actually execute the whole original vision. It means that whoever actually has the relevant skills when a design choice has to be made can end up being the only person in the room who actually knows what they're talking about, and if they don't have the seniority or ability to sway the group, their expertise may not even matter. This shrinks your collective horizons; and it had serious repercussions on the game we see. No competence with hair? No Tigerman. No post-origin character customization. Dredlock Sausages. No competence with loot dynamics? Loot shambles, over-reaching loot patches No competence with classic MMO population management? 12 player worlds No competence with RPG equipment dynamics? Gear shambles, Inappropriate activity rewards No competence with character power progression? Bizarre level power balances No competence with economy design? Over a dozen forms of progression currency No familiarity with long-tail gamer mentality? Extremely spotty and limited communication The cost of the Bungie organization ultimately attaining basic competence (but not comfort) with all those things in time to ship a product? Common Interface, Uncommon Continuity, Rare Excellence , Decoherent Narrative, Legendary Criticism, Exotic Community Support When they said, after the post-beta criticism, that they put a lot of work into perfecting the core functionality, they meant it. All you have to do is look at the "careers" page...it's basically a list of people that need to be hired to build the game out from the shooter core into what we're asking them for. Every single thing that the community has complained about or requested has a job opening posted that applies to it. 41 openings, as of this post. Edit: 50 openings, as of this bump, 11 days later. Stick with it and see where it goes, or not. They're no dummies, but they're just trying to do a whole lot of things they're apparently not really sure how to do well. The core is solid, but there are a lot of jacked up, half baked, cut back, and just plain incomplete ancillary systems tacked onto it. Tell them what you want, in detail. Give them ideas you'd be proud to see implemented. Think hard about the idea you're proposing first and ask yourself if it makes sense in the context of the core game. They say they read all this feedback; Don't make them regret doing it. They need all the constructive advice and help that they can get. See you starside...

  • This post makes everything make sense. My favorite part of this game is the combat. It's beautiful and fluid, because that's what bungie knows! The stuff they knew how to do is superb: the combat, the art design, and the underlying framework. If they can find people who know what they're doing to fill those vacant positions and to teach bungie how these new concepts work, this game is going to go from mediocre to epic in one DLC.

Thank you for this post. This makes a lot of the stuff that's been bothering me okay. And I'm not being sarcastic here; I thought Bungie was getting sloppy. But now that I know they're basically trying to run a raid on hard with 4 people (to use as relevant an analogy as possible), it's not so bad. I feel better now.

I should work there. You know, someday in the not-far-but-wouldn't-call-it-near future, when I have it on good authority that I possess any of the relevant skill sets.

  • I'm completely burnt out on destiny now it's boring I've put over 100 in and I feel like I've been stuck in the same place I was when the main story ended weeks ago. It's not evolving fast enough the content offers so far have been lackluster.

Excellent post. It begs the question why was launch not delayed further given the lack of positions filled? I see two Raid design and a multiplayer design position vacant. Player Advocacy job is empty. They are looking for Mission Designers, Character Investment Designer, Writer, just all of the things that many of us are complaining about. I get that the delivered product is not what was promised and that these vacancies are at least in part a root cause but didn't Bungie have an ethical responsibility to delay then instead of shipping half a loaf of bread?

      • Awesome, constructive and infromative post. Its a breath of fresh air compared to the majority of the negative and ignorant comments everywhere else, and Bungies lack of information given so far in the updates. Thanks.

          • Bungie also needs to really get themselves pulled together and look at other MMO and RPG games and see when and how they release and hold events. The Iron Banner was ridiculous! Ludicrous bounties was just the start of it! You don't even get a full month to play it and the ranks of the Iron Banner...Don't get me started. Rank 1 was one bounty, seems simple enough. Rank 2...1000 marks?! But wait there's more! Rank 3.....3000?!? Why Bungie?! Not everyone has all the time in the world to play Destiny. I only get a few hours a week because of homework and my social life. Not to mention that Bungie enacted it only a few months after release, who does that?! Bungie if you want this to be a good and SENSIBLE MMO, then please look at other MMO games and see how they do it. Please get things right from now on.

          • Would be nice if fireteam members can remain in group until they disband or get booted not if they orbit. Also we get rewarded with a playstation trophy for finding 50/61 ghosts but nothing if you find 61/61?

            • I should apply for the writer job. I'll never get it but... I could do better than what they have now.

                • Very well put. Great to see some rational research put into this post. It's a shame really, if many of these vacancies occurred before release, that it was not delayed a bit. That is one delay I think everyone would welcome. I absolutely loved the alpha, enough to pre-order asap. The beta still had some polish, but the release just did not quite feel like the game we were promised. I'm not complaining, and I haven't lost hope. It seems most of the rabblerousers are PVP-oriented, which doesn't bother me so long as the patches do not shake the PVE experience too much. I'm excited to see what the DLC brings to the universe, but based on your post, it just seems bungie is not currently equipped to handle the changes needed to make this game as legendary as we all want it to be. Here's hoping they can fix this before it really becomes an issue.

                  • One nitpick: I think the 12 player worlds was a deliberate design choice. Plus, it's one that I happen to like. Can you imagine a 200 headshot bounty with the common zones flooded with players? The very thought makes me shudder.

                    • Possibly the best post about the games faults yet, and it offers a glimmer of hope at how to improve the game dramatically. Very constructive and helpful, IMHO. Mature and directed. +1 - would read again.

                    • I enjoyed this post , and I wouldn't waste me time reading it if I didn't love the game , neither would any of you , and I do feel they listen and are improving on the game , which makes me happy I spend so much time on it , end of the day I enjoy logging in and shooting stuff and that for me is more than my money's worth

Good post. Good research. I did not see a date on that linked page. When were they looking? If it was at the beginning of production? Are they looking now? I bought the expansion pass already. I'm in till then. I just saw that Deej made a comment on a post named " What Bungie got right..? I commented we need to see that they are commenting. Listening to our suggestions. The game has great potential. I feel it is being wasted.

                        • Definitely opens up a different point of view on the company- question: were these job openings there at release, or during end-stage development leading up to release? I am just curious as to whether these positions were vacated pre-release, resulting in the finished product; or if were they vacated post realease because of the finished product; or are they newly created positions to supplement /improve the game that was released based on its reception.
