The Theoretical Story of Destiny

Unfortunately, this theory is incorrect. There are massive oversights and story elements that I either was unaware of or misunderstood. However, please feel free to read if you choose. Requested Edit ~ The theory is incorrect because it was based around the idea that Humanity was unaware of Vex. However, that is wrong. In Grimoire and in-game, it is mentioned and hinted that there was, in fact, previous knowledge of Vex. Regardless, I still stand firm in my belief that the Vex are somehow connected with the Traveller in a deeper, time altered state of reality. Disclaimer // In no way, shape, or form do I have knowledge of the true story of Destiny besides what is implied and said in the game. This is purely an analysis and breakdown of current knowledge regarding Destiny's story that act as conduits to theories and ideas. Note // There may also be holes in the theory, however, so far nearly everything can be explained. The Destiny Universe Contrary to the mainstream belief that Destiny has no story, it does. The story and potential capability Destiny has is expansive. There are almost no bounds to what can happen and there are many different events that can happen. What we have with Destiny in-game is a literal shell. There is hardly any substance within. We could theorize why that is, but this is not the place to do so. The fact is that the execution of the story was awful. Yet, despite that, there seem to be many hints that indicate what might happen in the story. Bungie's Plan Bungie, in my belief, had a plan to give just enough story in the game for the community to rave about it. "Who is the Speaker?" "Who is the Stranger?" This is a perfectly fine approach to keeping people guessing and on edge. The problem is that there just simply wasn't enough detail, chronology, and substance to get you invested or interested. The characters, enemies, and pretty much everything to add story is flat, even with Grimoire cards. So, what this leaves us with is perfect grounds for ridiculous and crazy imaginitive theories. The Vex The Vex are the most important part in the Destiny universe. Their power, ability, and intelligence exceeds the conceivable spectrum. The Stranger The Stranger first warned you of Vex on the moon. She told you there are worse enemies beyond the Hive and Fallen. The cutscene after the first encounter with Vex on Venus, she tells you these important things: •She is not forged in light •A side must be chosen, even if it's the wrong one. •The Vex are so evil that they despise other evil. The Traveller Here's where things start not adding up. We were in a peaceful age, then we discovered the Traveller on Mars. With it came the Darkness. It smashed Humanity down and forced us to reside in a small city on Earth. No one knows why or what happened. All we know is that we were on the brink of extinction, but the Traveller saved us. That raises red flags for me. We don't remember what happened and now, since we are still alive, we feel we owe our lives to the Traveller. Before I continue, there is an emblem the Speaker sells called, "Blessing of the Skeptic". It depicts in three separate frames a white sphere rising. This looks like the Traveller rising. Skepticism and the Traveller depicted in the same setting? Interesting. The Vex Continued Now, we know the Vex turned Mercury into a machine. This implies they have the capability to transform and create anything out of whatever they choose. Is it possible the Vex created the Traveller? Let me explain: When we set out on our mission to do the Traveller's bidding, which is to push back the Darkness, the only enemies we know of are Fallen and Hive, but the Cabal later on Mars were no surprise. That implies we knew of them already. When it comes to the Vex, though, we knew nothing. Your Ghost, a digital intelligence coming from the Traveller didn't even know about Vex. I'll go in further detail about that in a second. What's important is that the Vex were unknown to us while other forms of Darkness were not. Then here comes the Stranger telling us to pick a side even if it's the wrong one and that the Vex despise other evil. The Connection The Vex created the Traveller. It looms above the city of Earth and "protects" us. It gave us power to push the Darkness away. The Vex wanted other forms of Darkness eradicated. This is why the Traveller gave Humanity powers. It knows we are ignorant and would blindly fight for something we feel we owe our lives to. The plan was to play on Humanity's emotions after bringing us to a point of near extinction where we don't remember how it happened so we will fight for it in attempts to cling desperately to survival. But, we are tools that eradicate other forms of Darkness to further the Vex agenda. Simply put, the Vex juked us, big time. We were never supposed to find the Vex. Our mission was to kill all Fallen, Hive, Cabal and any other Darkness that stood in the way of the Vex. Your Ghost didn't know about Vex because it acts as a failsafe. Humanity needed an aid to get us through this eradication of Darkness, so the Traveller gave us an aid with selected intelligence. Giving the Ghost selected intelligence ensures that the true agenda is both hidden and progressing at the same time. Is it not interesting that the Stranger chose us to talk to? That we are the first to uncover the Vex? There has been a breach in the Vex's agenda. Their algorithm was incorrect for determining how the eradication process of other Darkness would go. Therefore, we go to the Black Garden and kill "the heart". The Black Garden What is interesting to me is that you go through a portal on Mars that leads you to the Black Garden. Your Ghost says it's not on any known region of space and time. This suggests you either travelled to the future or the past. After the heart is killed, your Ghost tells you you are back on Mars, yet you are still in the same area. What happened is that the Stranger gave you an ominous and indirect objective. She is from the future to have you, from the past, stop what is happening in her future to prevent it from happening in yours. This is why when you kill the Heart you are not trapped in the past. You killed the Heart in the future and were returned to a state of which the heart is now non existent in both your time and the Stranger's future. My thinking is that in the Stranger's future, the Traveller has awakened. They are fighting an all out war with the Vex and Traveller and need you, a now apointed agent, to kill Vex from the future to stop the Traveller from awakening. Edit // This is not a finished theory, but feel free to comment as I work some kinks out and add to it.

  • [Recording begins] This is Hunter Dredgen Yor. I believe that, as a human, these are my last words. [laughs] Ironic isn’t it. I miss those two words… It has been so long since my Thorn has been a rose. Even now, I can blame no one but myself. I record this message in a rare moment of clarity. I can feel my Thorn feeding on my feeble Light. It whispers to me… [silence]. It wants me to give in to it. And I believe that this time, I may listen to it. I have been more Dark than Light for some time now, and I weaken. I have fought this thing for years, to little effect. I have fed Thorn with Light and blood aplenty, and in return it has given me nothing but sorrow and ruin. Even now my only blood relative hunts me. I deserve it. Choices are crossroads of destiny, and I myself chose the wrong roads. The first wrong turn began beneath the surface of the moon, back when my rose was still in full bloom. Back when I still thought my name was Jaren. Deep below the Moon’s surface, I was exploring with my partner, Padan Yur. She was a warlock, and she was just as beautiful as she was deadly. I loved her. We ran into the midst of a Hive ritual in which Wizards enchanting a Knight who lay in a pool of darkness. They turned on us and attacked. We killed them all, but in the fight Padan was injured. [sob][silence] [deep breaths] Padan died In the dark, covered in her own blood and Hive ichor. It. Broke. Me. I make no excuses, and I own my choice. As I wept and held Padan, who had grown cold in my arms, I began to hear a whispering. It spoke to me comfortingly. This was not the fault of the Hive, it said. This was my fault, it told me. It said I was to blame because I was not strong enough to protect her. [silence] And then it said that it could make me stronger. It would make me strong enough that this would never happen again. Think of all the good I could do, it said. And, half crazy with grief, I listened. That day I dipped Last Word into the pool of Darkness that the dead Knight lay in. On that day my lovely rose began to wilt…

        • Your ghost is the AI War Mind known as Rasputin I can see Rasputin hacking into the Vex and turning them to protect humanity since their "brain" is now gone. Has anybody noticed that the mission where you find the Traveler's shard is on the moon.. How did it get there? My theory is that the Traveler while fighting the darkness scraped the moon and managed put those big gashes which in turn is why the traveler is damaged from the bottom as your looking at it from the tower..

The problem is, people weren't paying attention. I can link dozens of threads where people didn't realize that significant pieces of information were scattered throughout the game's dialogue if you pay attention. Ultimately, people were expecting a cinematic driven narrative like Halo, and instead they got a more scattered but realistic story where people don't monologue about details in 5 minute cut scenes every 15 minutes.

                • is the traveler a beacon for the darkness? is the fallen, cabal, and hive, running away? frome what? what is the darkness figure, is it just a black fog seeking the traveler? the old story was different. the stranger was supposed to be a male. named Crow, he knew the dark truth about the speaker/traveler he knew that the speaker was trying to revive the Traveler. the speaker was co-operating with the hive, the hive wer making a weapon on the moon to bring it back to life, so Crow tells you the truth, Crow takes you to this hideout with other guardians that knew, killing their ghost, cause even the ghost was evil. i got this information from a reddit post that a guy posted after he tested the game before alfa to give bungie feedback. the reddit was taken down...

I don't have the link but a video someone did about Destiny showed a Reddit post done by someone who claimed to have to tested the game's original story, content we never saw. In it Crow, presumably the Queen's brother, knocks you out and kidnaps you shortly after you start playing the game. He and the Stranger, which was then a male, tell you the truth about the Traveler. That the Traveler isn't the saint the Speaker makes it out to be and the Speaker himself is part of the problem too. I don't know where the Vex tie into this but your theory does make a lot of sense. Much like how Silver Surfer prepares a planet for Galactis's arrival I think the Traveler does the same for the Vex. They created it as a scout, it creating Ghosts and helping us was either desperation or a result of us breaking the code and forcing it to help us. It would explain why the Hive had a piece of it. Vex despise all other evil ... so if they created the Traveler to scout for said evil and eradicate it the logical thing for the Hive to do is try and destroy the Traveler. If not incapacitate it to their best ability.

                  • So I've literally only read maybe half of the comments posted on this thread, so excuse me if someone else has already mentioned this. However, I think you might be on the right track with the vex creating the traveler. I only say this because of the striking resemblance the traveler has to a mechanical planet that has suffered damage. Kind of makes sense right? I mean they tell you in the game that the vex have the ability to turn a planet into a giant machine, so what if there is something to benefit from them doing so?

                    • DESTINY CONSPIRACY EDITION: Do the cabal vex and fallen and hive have anything in common? No we just have the speakers word for it that they're bad. Pretty sure the fallen created the traveler, we stole it and now they just came to get it back. Humanity colonized Mars? Aka colonized it by stealing it from the cabal who look at home there. Lastly the vex are machines, someone created them, probably the humans, and when they became self aware we tried to destroy them. They literally created the garden outside of space and time to be alone and we still hunted them down. The speakers just says "darkness" as a way to describe anyone he wants guardians to rid of. The hive are pretty much bugs and sure they took the moon but why do we need it? They are just ants digging a home. So we stole the traveler, took the cabal home land, created machines only to kill them and exterminated bugs on the moon. But trust the speaker it's all the "darkness" LOL.

                      • Just quick observation, but the Traveller is discovered by humanity on Mars. The same place where the Black Garden entrance is. And why did it go to Mars first? Was it looking for something there, we stumble upon it, and it figures it can use us for its purposes? Or was it on its way to us for truly altruistic reasons like it seems to be implied?

                        • Another interesting thing I found weird only two figures accept motes of light as currency. The speaker and Xur I can understand the speaker wanting light from the traveler but what dose Xur want them for. Could xur be the speaker from the future after all you never see the speaker's face. To my knowledge he is the only one in the tower with a mask or helmet on.

                          • You have a good point from what I've heard of the cut story the speaker defected and turned to the dark side being our enemy and I've also heard that we were supposed to reawaken the traveler but it continued its quest to destroy earth instead of saving it

Things to think about though: Mankind knew about the Vex during the Golden Age and before the collapse, read Ghost Fragments: Vex 1, 2 & 3, where the Ishtar Collective are studying a Vex unit, discover the Vex are able to create lifelike simulations and agree to have a Warmind invade the Vex collective to help them break out of the Vex simulation they now believed they were a part of. There is another interesting Grimoire: Ghost Fragment: Darkness 3 (from the Journals of Toland, the Shattered), giving a frustrated account of mankind's inability to comprehend what is actually happening around them, we question why, when we should just accept that it just IS: "Why does anything exist? No no no no no don't reach for that word. There's no 'reason'. That's teleology and teleology will stitch your eyelids shut. Why do we have atoms? Because atomic matter is more stable than the primordial broth. Atoms defeated the broth. That was the first war. There were two ways to be and one of them won. And everything that came next was made of atoms." My theory is there is no motivation for the Vex, they're a plague, they spread throughout the Universe, reshaping the planets, for no other reason than that is what they do. I also believe that once the Traveller had finished terraforming our solar system, making way for the Vex to reshape the planets as they've done many times before (Ghost Fragments: The Traveller 1, 2 & 3 and Ghost Fragments: Ghosts), the Traveller would have been pushed (Ghost Fragement: The Traveller 2) to it's next destination by the Vex. Unfortunately, Mankind aren't going to give up such Power that easily, I think we attempted to enslave the Traveller to retain that Power. We created Warminds (Rasputin) who's prime objective was to defend/secure the Traveller (SECURE ISIS), we're told however that the Warmind's were to protect us. Just a theory. I really do love all the mystery in this game.
