Shaxx & the purpose of the Crucible (serious story this time!)

So... the little text which I wrote about Shaxx and the Vanguard having a laugh at our expense has got much, much popular than I expected. I am very happy that you guys liked it, and I thank you all for your support, appreciation and suggestions. Funny thing (and as I told some of you) that story was meant to be a serious piece when I conceived it, not a satire. I actually do believe that my matches at the Crucible have made me better at playing Destiny altogether, and that not only shows in the Crucible itself (where I started off as a scrub, as I´ve always played shooters using a mouse, and now I usually earn 3rd place at least) but also in Strikes and other instances. Some people have encouraged me to write serious pieces, so I thought... why not show them the original idea? So here you go, guys. Although it´s not as inspired as the parody piece, I´m still hoping that you enjoy it. There are some personal experiences here. In fact, in this little story... when you get to the part of a Titan fending off a Hive attack? That actually happened to me in a Heroic Storymode mission. Some parts may seem sloppy but English is not my first language, so be patient on me. Oh, and watch for the easter egg! Ok, here we go... ----------------------- - Forgive my interruption, Lord Shaxx… But I see no point in the Crucible. Lord Shaxx turned away from the several monitors he was observing, where several Guardians were shown fighting each other in repeated matches, to look at the Exo who had just spoken: a newly reborn Guardian who had chosen the path of the Hunter. Slowly, Shaxx removed his helmet, something that he rarely did openly at the Tower. Indeed, his face was not a sight that most could stand with ease: his skin was crossed by scars all over; his scalp, completely shaved, to disguise the portion of his head that would never grow hair again due to severe burns; one of his eyes, only functional due to the wonders of cybernetics. Taller than most Guardians, and even standing out among the hulking machines that are Titans, Shaxx was indeed an intimidating presence. But instead of showing bitterness to the visitor because of his comment, he offered a kind smile. - What is your name, Exo? - Valjean-J, Sir- said the Exo, with a firm nod of respect. - And you have brought back to the Light short ago, yes? Perhaps you have entered the Crucible just recently? - Correct, Sir. And I can´t see the benefit in pitting us against each others, wasting time and resources, when we should be out there, facing the enemy. It does not seem logical. Lord Shaxx walked up to a bookshelf near the monitors, and picked up and old book. - Valjean, since you carry the name of a hero from the antique French literature, I think that this may be a good time to read something to you. We may have vast amounts of information coded, but every now and then, a small tome of human history finds its way to us. And, as you can Imagine, I have a special interest in books regarding human military history. Listen closely:
“After the sudden death of his father, a young Prince had risen to power. He soon admitted his lack of experience as a ruler, and summoned three of his most powerful servants: the Prime Minister, the Bishop, and the General. The Prince said, - My friends, I may now be your King, but I know that I lack vision and perspective. If I must become a good and strong King, I must know how to properly seize and maintain power. In your opinion, what are the greatest sources of power for a monarch? How can I keep my kingdom strong and safe? - You must controlyour land, my King! If you have a deep knowledge of the course of the rivers, and the quickest ways from towns to city, no enemy will be able to out-maneuver you in the field! - No, my King! You must know the minds of men! You must know what drives your allies forward and what seeds doubt into the heart of your foes, and use that knowledge in your favor! In that moment, the General, who had become visibly irritated, drew out his claymore, and decapitated the other two men in one crushing blow. As blood covered the ground, and while the young King stared horrified, the General said, - Forgive me, your grace, but these two would not be quiet. Now, tell me, what is it that you want to know about true power?- said the General with a vicious smile, staring into the eyes of the terrified young King”.
Lord Shaxx put the book back in its place on the shelf with a satisfied look, since his duties as the Crucible director didn´t leave him much time for small but enriching pleasures such as reading. Then, turning to the Exo and offering a smile like the one a father would give to a son, he said: - Now, Valjean… Although you are an Exo, you probably know that, in human tradition, these stories or fables were used to send a message, or teach a lesson. What would be the morale behind this passage? Valjean looked to the ground, with his robotic face reflecting an expression of confusion. - That… in struggle or battle, raw force is the best source of power. But that lesson seems too simple. - Indeed, my friend. A fighter that relies only on brutality is like a wild beast: there´s only so much damage that he can do before he falls, exhausted from wasting stamina and breath and with many wounds that could have been avoided. But the same could be said about other kinds of fighters. A strategist who knows the terrain he´s fighting in can easily be outsmarted by someone with a great capacity of improvisation, whereas a master tactician will only be someone with good ideas, if he lacks the strength to use them. Shaxx then returned to his monitors, but then took a step aside.-Valjean- he said, -please join me for a moment-. The Exo walked slowly towards the monitors, honored by the invitation but unsure of its purpose. - You asked why I encourage fellow Guardians to fight each other in the Crucible, when we could be sending you away to baptize yourself in fire against the minions of the Darkness. Yes, we could indeed. It seems that all Guardians that come back to us possess basic notions of tactical combat and the use of firearms already, so why not? Yes… give a man a gun, and he suddenly feels like he can take the world back all on his own. But what will happen to that courage when facing the inconceivable monstrosities of the Hive, the brutal military units of the Cabal, or the cold and silent efficiency of the Vex? That courage, Guardian, will be worth nothing, and only the knowledge of battle will determine victory or death. Shaxx pointed at a monitor at his left, where a Titan jumped several feet in the air to avoid the blast of a grenade. - Look at that fighter. Just yesterday, his Ghost sent me footage of his incursion into the Hellmouth. While fending off several Thralls, a Knight charged at him from a corridor, wielding a huge blade. An inexperienced soldier would have emptied a clip on the beast hoping to slow it down. But this Titan… He jumped backwards, safely dodging the slash, and then threw a grenade at the monster´s head. Shaxx then drew the Exo´s attention to another monitor at the far right. - And look at that Warlock. In his first days, he ran ahead of everyone believing himself to be unbreakable… and fell into many traps. But watch now, as he marches at a safe distance from his brother in arms, covering the left flank knowing that his partner will cover him in return. Turning to the Exo and placing a hand on his shoulder –which felt to the Guardian as if someone had placed an ox´s leg on him-, Shaxx looked right into his eyes and continued: - These fighters didn´t learn advanced tactical combat fighting the likes of the Fallen, Valjean. They didn´t learn how to strike with that speed, determination and calculation in the Moon. These fighters became what they are now after baptizing themselves in the blood and fire of the Crucible. At first they were thrown against Guardians better than themselves. And, just like you, they suffered one crushing defeat after another, both in the battle and in their spirit. But they persevered. They stood their ground, learnt from the tactics used by them, they learnt how to fight as a team, and they improved beyond their own expectations. After enduring the Crucible, these Guardians will be better than any minion that the Darkness can birth, and even when facing the very worst that our enemy will have to offer… -Shaxx clenched his gloved left hand, almost as big as a human skull-. Just like five fingers become a fist, a united team of skilled Guardians will become unstoppable . After a moment of silence, Valjean took a step back, his eyes gazing at the ground. But then, he looked back at Lord Shaxx- and although the mechanisms of his facial features were limited, he showed an expression of understanding and inspiration. - I … I understand now. Thank you for your time, Lord Shaxx. I will try harder. Valjean-J then left the corridor heading for the docking bay, while Shaxx crossed his arms- with a slight but noticeable touch of pride in his eyes, as he watched the Guardian leave. - - - - - Good evening, Lord Shaxx. Uhm... That new soldier looked confused. Why did he come to you? said Commander Zavala. ------------- That´s all folks! Hope you enjoyed this little piece of storytelling.

  • Here is my own little piece of crucible fan-fiction. take a read if you like!
The hunter rests his eyes as his ship auto-pilots to the arena. He hasn't had to "fly" since his ghost revived him in the middle of old russia, so he relishes the brief shuteye whenever he can. The crucible grows more tiresome with each return, but as the named champion of the New Monarchy, the hunter doesn't have much of a choice. He feels the quaking of the ship as they enter the atmosphere. Ghost once again proves a useful companion as he navigates the ship to the drop-zone. The hunter keeps his eyes shut until his feet hit solid ground. He falls to one knee as he materializes out of thin air, left hand to the ground, right hand close to his ear holding his cherished hand cannon. Without standing the hunter retreats behind the nearest cover and draws his Ice Breaker. The hunter can feel the rifle generating ammo, and he waits patiently for the active camo to engage. A few seconds pass and the hunter can no longer see his own rifle. He breaks cover and scans the vista. Gun-shots and grenades sound like fire-crackers in the distance, but the scope brings the hunter eerily close to the action. The wind swirls the red sand of mars and obscures the marksman's vision momentarily. As the sand clears he spots a titan running full-speed to the nearest bunker. The hunter chuckles (titans run slow), leads the target and squeezes the trigger. The titan bursts into particles as Ice Breaker claims it's first foe. The hunter draws his cannon once again, preparing to reposition. Moving with liquid grace, the hunter dashes forward. He keeps an eye on his radar as he moves across the battlefield, always listening for his foes, chanting his own mantra as he moves. "I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye. I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind. I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father. I kill with my heart." As the hunter rounds a corner he hears the sound of a shotgun shell sliding into a chamber. He knows that sound well. He can feel the presence of the warlock waiting just around the corner. His chanting halts briefly and the gunslinger leaps through the doorway. As he soars he swings his gun around to face the direction he just came. There in the corner is a warlock, shotgun in hand, ready to paint the walls with the blood of the gunslinger. The hunter's momentum carries him outside the shotgun's range, and in one practiced motion the gunslinger pulls his knife from it's sheathe and hurls it at the surprised face of the warlock. The warlock is bathed in flames as the solar charged knife buries itself deep in the mask of the dying guardian. The screams grow muffled as the hunter moves on, face grim, mind focused, carrying death with him. "I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye." The hunter knows he has just two more enemies on the field. He finds cover once again and crouches to gain his bearings. As he recovers he hears heavy footsteps approaching. The hunter draws Ice Breaker once more, feeling the weight of the full chamber, and aims out toward the footsteps. A tinge of fear taints the hunter's focus as his sights level on a real life goliath. A titan, clad in black and white armor with a terror-inspiring skull scratched into the near impenetrable chest armor is walking straight towards the hunter, carrying a heavy machine gun as comfortably as a woodsman bearing a hatchet. The titan walks arrogantly forward and begins to raise his death machine. The hunters fear- clogged mind clears as the behemoth approaches; he levels the sights on the titan's helmet and squeezes the trigger. As Ice Breaker looses it's battle cry, the titan reacts blindingly fast. He jumps into the air and throws his arms wide, and a void forcefield spawns into existence and ricochets the round back at the hunter, puncturing his cloak as the hunter dives to the side. The titan stands in his forcefield laughing, pointing at the hunter with his machine gun. The titan slides his finger across his neck as he moves toward the disoriented hunter. The hunter dives for cover as the tip of the titan's machine gun pushes through the force barrier and begins to shred the landscape. The slugs roar as they fly over the hunter. He can feel his cover disintegrating as the titan's bullets slam into it one after another after another. The slugs kick up sand around the hunter and he is temporarily blinded by the storm the titan is hurling his way. Blinded by sand, and deafened by thunder, the hunter frantically plots his survival. But in that moment, lightning crackles, breaking through the thunder. The titan's onslaught abates momentarily and the hunter takes advantage of the respite to see what he can. Hardly capable of vision, he lifts his head and squints his eyes. A flash of blue and a quick blur draw the titan's attention and he turns to face the new threat. Fast as lightning a bladedancer materializes just above the force barrier, and equally quick he lunges through barrier and stabs the arc blade twice into the titan. The titan goes down with laughter still on his face. The gunslinger sees this all happen in a split-second. Before the titan even hits the ground the bladedancer is moving. Lightning crackles down his arm as he dashes toward the gunslinger. The gunslinger feels fear course through his veins like fire. His limbs and chest burn in protest of his impending death. He lifts his cannon to his eyes intending to thank it for it's unwavering loyalty to his cause, when he sees it too is burning. "I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind." Without thinking the gunslinger aims his flaming weapon, his golden gun, at the bladedancer and squeezes the trigger. "I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father. I kill with my heart."
• Why did Shaxx send Arcite 99-40 to speak with the Dreg about fixing crucible matches and equipping Guardians with their weapons? Dun dun dun....conspiracy and treason. Ghost Fragment: The City Age 2
/ What was that? / Nothing. We're secure. / We'd better be. / Calm down. Whole district's been deserted ever since the Gap. Nobody's here. / Except us. Why'd he make us come out here? / Secrecy. I don’t know. He's our man on the inside; so we humor him. It's just the quiet making you jump. Help me get this screen set up? / It feels criminal. / I got word from the Consensus says it's not. / You know what I mean. Maybe it's not against any law. But it's messing with the Tower. It feels - / Dangerous? / Wrong. / So go home. / Yeah, you'd like that, wouldn't you? You take the credit, get promoted to Division Head, I'm stuck - / So stay. OK. Think it's working now. / Nothing on screen. Do we have a signal? / No. Sha - the contact said at 6 sharp. / Then he's late. If he dragged us out here for nothing - / Yeah? What are you going to do to him, exactly? / Let's just - / We have a signal! OK, here it comes. / Static. / There - / That's not - / You're not Sha - / 99-40. Arcite. Are you Modris Wyndham and Sya Droysen, of the Tex Mechanica Foundry West District? / Yes - / My owner has instructed me to give you the following message: I don't have time for lowlife dregs like you. You disgust me. / But - / My owner has instructed me to continue: Sit down and let the frame talk. I know your type. City bigshots. You can show some damn - / Listen - / respect. Now listen. I got your message. The answer is no. I'm - / But - / not going to fix Crucible fights for you idiots just to make your Tex Mechanica junk look good. Do you - / Now I wouldn't put it quite like that - / think you're the first dregs dumb enough to try to buy me? Why do you people think you can buy me? Don't I have an honest face? Do I look like I need your money? The Crucible is sacred, that's what you people don't understand, like you think it's a game. Now - / Damn. / this is the part where you start blustering at my little buddy here and telling him it's all legal down in the City, just business, just sponsorship. So listen: I can have ten Titans crashing through your ceiling any time I like and you can tell them it's just business. / Damn. / Or we can talk about how you're going to make this up to me. / Ah. / My little buddy's listening. • Good read, nice work. That said I still agree with this Exo Hunter, don't see how guardian-as-enemy tactics make you better at killing four enemy races all with differing fighting styles. Just don't understand wasting light by pitting guardians against eachother, it's the secondary reason as to why I never play Crucible with my Exo Hunter, heh. But again, I dig the read and at least you made it seem reasonable, looking forward to more fan-fiction, one of the best things on the forums.
