An odd choice with Iron Banner, Bungie. (Not a hate thread)

Usually, I only go into multiplayer with a full group of friends. However, today has given me a glimpse into the world of someone who doesn't have many active friends on their respective console. It was horrible. Bungie made the correct choice with Iron Banner by only rewarding the people that win. I love how it promotes a more competitive feel to the game, much like the ranked game types in Halo. What I don't understand is why they only chose to release it with the one game type? We only have 4 as it is, which really isn't a lot. When you couple that with only rewarding people who win, but force them to play a game type that they dislike or simply don't have enough people for, it isn't a true representation of their skill level, and it isn't fair on them. For instance, this morning when I had none of my usual friends online I got thrown in with a team who, by the looks of the way they were playing, preferred to play Clash. Running past objectives, not defending choke points, piling on the offensive, etc, etc. It isn't fair to expect those that don't play objective games to win a whole bunch, and it isn't fair to force those players unto people who like to play the objective. It also isn't fair to expect players with no online friends to join into a team based game with hopes of winning. When, if I'm on my own, I would much rely on my own ability to determine the outcome of the match. Personally, I'm not overly keen on Rumble, but my friend loves it. Throwing him into an objective game type completely threw his game off and he kept losing, although he is a very skilled player. tl;dr: If you're going to release a game mode where you can only get the unlocks by winning, release it with all the available game types so that people can enjoy playing the mode that they feel most confident in, giving a fairer and truer representation of their skill. This isn't me slating Bungie, I love the game and I'm really enjoying Iron Banner. But I'm someone with a full fire team of 6 who all prefer to play Control. Your opinions? Thoughts? I'd love to know what Clash and Rumble players think to this.

  • My theory on why they only gave one play type is that we're going to be seeing IB again in the future. Bungie will probably base each instance around one play type each time it comes up. It might also be to prevent players from dropping out early to get the play type they want.

    • I do wish there were other game modes available and I do like how only the winning team gets the rep, but at the same time I can barely play a match because of all the rage-quitters that bail the second their team falls behind

      • Your glimpse is my life. It was easy to pick up competent players in other games through voice chat. {looking at you COD} Easy to communicate in PUGs (Pick Up Groups) and coordinate strategy/tactics. {we don't have a keyboard/voice Comm.} If this game were on a computer you would have seen Vent (Ventrillo: a third party open communication software) information being given out to competent players due to lack of support for Voice Comm. in game. {I am sure the top 1% do this which makes me laugh that a console game has to rely on a separate computer based software & periphrials} Trying to coordinate and communicate anything to a PUG (strike or crucible) in Destiny is like trying to have a discussion on the Theory of Relativity through sign language limited to 4 "words". In SUM: if one releases a game that requires any type of group strategy (MMO/FPS/Whatever the hell Destiny is trying to bill itself as today to shirk any responsibility) One should create the game with robust communication features (voice communication, heck I will even settle for painful typed console communication at this point, etc).

        • I agree, a veto system could of been used at least so's to not play the same map 5 times in a row. Have clash and control or even some new game modes randomised with a choice of 3 maps with different game modes to vote for each game.

Agreed. Objective based game types are nearly impossible to win for solo players. Domination variants like Control are especially brutal because you can't capture a point and defend it without losing another one simultaneously. You end up right back where you started completely frustrated praying you can at least salvage your k/d to make the best of a loss you couldn't prevent. It's pretty ridiculous IB wasn't set on a rotating playlist at the very least because the average random has absolutely no clue how Control scoring works or couldn't care less about playing an objective. They just want to shoot anything that moves. Hell... a large majority of my losses are from us losing a 2500 - 5000 point lead because of it. TDM would have gave both types of players (hardcore and casual) a 50/50 shot of coming back from a loss without any teammate assistance. Control doesn't even give you half a chance. Period.
