The Embrace of Winter: Part 5

The EXO tightened his grip on the controls and opened the rear engines all the way. The ship rocketed forward with surprising speed, but to turn he had to activate thrusters on the side of the ship. It may not even have been meant to fly in atmosphere, and it certainly seemed like it with how awkward it maneuvered. "Hold the ship steady or it will get torn apart," grumbled his Ghost. "I can't hold this thing together if you're going to do so many crazy twists in the air." "I am sure you will make it through," groaned the EXO as he tried to get the ship to pull up out of the way of a sniper's fire. "I have to move around a lot to avoid all of their shots. Unless you would rather we get hit?" They were both silent for the rest of their journey towards the exit. After all, they both needed to concentrate. The ship took several more hits, and several times thet nearly crashed into various objects. As they finally approached the entrance, the EXO saw that the way out was blocked. The EXO broke the silence as he suggested, "You know I think it would be a great time to open the way out, because if I slow down these multiple armed guys are going to blast us to the next world." "I'm trying," grunted his Ghost. "Something is wrong. The console won't respond remotely. We have to find another way." The EXO winced as he said, "You said there was no other exit we could make it to. This is our only chance." His Ghost realized what was happening. "No, don't you dare do it," threatened his Ghost. "I won't bring you back again if you do something this stupid." "Cross your fingers," chuckled the EXO as he lifted the ship up towards the closed exit. As they sped closer to their doom, the platform descended. On it were several Fallen captains and an Archon who roared and raised their guns into the air as they saw the ship racing towards them. To the captain's dismay the ship was going too fast, and none of them had a chance to fire their weapons before the EXO and his Ghost had zoomed past them. As they climbed up the chute that led up to the surface, the ship scraped against the sides a few times. "You got lucky back there," groaned his Ghost. "Try not to kill us now that we are nearly home free." "We just have to get through that building at the top of this," laughed the EXO as he tensed up. "Hope this thing is strong enough to burst through that wood." "I hope it's just wood," chimed in his Ghost. As the moment of truth came, the ship did in fact break through the log roof of the building above them. As they kept racing into the sky they were both grateful that there was not another snowstorm. "You know, if it had been snowing like before," explained his Ghost now that the danger seemed past. "Some of the ship's parts might have frozen over and made this all for nothing." "That seems like something I should have known upfront," said the EXO. "It was kind of important." "At least it all worked out," said his Ghost defensively. "Maybe next time you could just tell," The EXO was interrupted as their ship got hit on the side and rocked back and forth. They looked back and saw an army of the Fallen with four giant spider tanks all shooting at their ship. The Tanks could not get their laser cannons high enough, but they were all slowly raising up red targeting lasers towards the ship. "We need to move, now!" Said his Ghost frantically. "Agreed," said the EXO as he forced the ship to the left and away from the army. "We can talk about this again after we are safe." "Finally you see my point," chuckled his Ghost. "Now let me guide you to the last safe city on Earth."
