Destiny’s servers are going down — and this is on purpose this time!
Developer Bungie revealed today that it plans to pull the plug on the servers for its sci-fi shooter tomorrow morning. At 7 a.m. Pacific time, the studio plans to perform some updates and maintenance on its blockbuster release. This will require the company to shut down the online game for several hours, but Bungie expects its fixes will make Destiny more stable in the long run.
“The maintenance window for this work will interrupt Destiny services for several hours,” according to Bungie’s website. “You will be unable to play the game during that time.”
Since launching in early September, Destiny has had various Internet issues. Players still regularly experience a problem where it loses the connection and sends them back to the main menu. Since Destiny is an online-only game, any server or connection problems can ruin the whole experience. This is exactly what Bungie is planning on addressing tomorrow morning.
“Most of the changes included in this update will improve the technology that enables players to connect to Destiny,” reads Bungie’s website. “The Player experience will remain unchanged, aside from the stability for some users who have encountered issues connecting to servers.”
In its list of fixes, Bungie notes it is performing general improvements to its server, but it also is applying a patch that should “reduce the frequency of some” disconnection problems. It is also implementing a better logging system to help it understand and diagnose certain issues.
Destiny is one of the biggest games of the year. Publisher Activision, which is distributing the shooter, revealed that Destiny made $325 million after just five days on the market. That comes despite mixed reviews from critics — although the response from reviewers is generally favorable, according to Metacritic.
