KDR vs Competitives vs Casuals vs Hardcore Gamers

It is wonderful that Destiny possesses aspects that competitive gamers, hardcore gamers, core gamers and casual gamers can appreciate, but there is a particular group of gamers that are hurting the general gaming community. From reading some forum threads, one may be under the impression that kill-death ratio (KDR or kdr) determines whether or not you are a hardcore or core gamer. I had a fellow forum poster essentially say that because my Destiny KDR is barely over 1.00, that I must be casual. The thing is that I also mentioned Dark Souls being one of my favorite games. I always thought that only core gamers and hardcore gamers would enjoy Dark Souls. That was the impression that I had when reading reviews and finally playing the game. According to this individual, gamer status is exclusively based upon the KDR of a specific genre or game and not the amount of investment. I will admit that I'm not a competitive gamer, but that does not mean that I cannot be a core or hardcore gamer. These competitive elitists really need to change their attitude toward their fellow gamers. They are poisoning the perception held for the competitive community. I know very well that it is possible to be competitive while not being a jerk.

  • IMO the first one to mention kdr is a douche. I mean mine isn't bad but it's not that great either. 1.23 for control and 1.5 or something like that for skirmish isn't much to brag about. Either way the first person to mention kd is a douche and need to leave

What annoys me most is this impression that everyone with a good KD, is a try hard and doesn't have fun playing crucible because they're sweating so hard. Which is completely untrue. I have tonnes of fun messing around in PvP, and if I so happen to wipe the floor with the majority of players then so be it. I am a casual crucible player, with barely any time invested in to it. Secondly what annoys me is when players who are clearly bad, think themselves to be good at PvP and excuse themselves with "oh I'm not a tryhard I'm casual". Hardcore players are perhaps the worst. They'll play loads of games, have a bad Kd, bad win rate and can't shoot for their life but claim they are better than you because Kd "doesn't mean anything". Ultimate sweatys will only run PvP if they have a full team, use callouts and play to win. Kd doesn't mean anything to them, but they have the highest Kds anyway. W/L is their thing. Have fun playing PvP, and if you're bad your Kd won't be good and if you're good whether you're a sweaty or not, you're still good.

      • Hardcore =\= competitive. I've always been hardcore, my KDR in mp is always around 1-1.5 (like it is in Destiny); that's what it was in Halo 3 and that's what it is in BF 4. It's solid. I know there are people better than me, but I don't care. Good for them, but sometimes they take it too fat. I've always found the competitive crowd to be strange. Their option of "If you have a under a 2.0 you suck etc" is just so absurd; they have too much disdain for other players that aren't as good as they are. Additionally, in an online game how are we judging competitiveness? There isn't exactly a level playing field in terms of infrastructure- one person can have dial up, while his opponent has fiber optic. Strange sense of sporting. I know e-sports is trying to be a thing, but I honestly find it ridiculous. How you can call this a sport I'll never understand. I think if you're over 21, the e-sport stuff is just laughable.

        • Its simple. End result is all that matters. Winning > all else. Games line Socom showed me the value of team work early in my online gaming life. You could kill 2 people the whole game, only die once and be the reason why the team won. Of course that style game had true objective modes.

        • I could consider myself as a core.If i have fun i dont care who win who lose or my K/D.I am not conpetitive enought to play only pvp stuff. If i dont have fun i ain't going to play wich make pvp for me a waste of time since,i almost always end up trolling people. When i have the upper hand, its fun for me to think that the guy is wasting ammo like crazy on someone that dont even shoot at him.I go were my heart is and mess thing there.

        • "real" hardcore gamers worry about their W/L ratio rather than K/D

          • This is one of the reasons I enjoyed both Battlefield 4 and Ghost Recon Future Soldier. They had MP which was based around objectives, not k/d. In a well-thought out multiplayer game based on team pla, k/d would be an irrelevant stat. Control is an excellent mode for team play, but it sometimes gets ruined by bounties for "headshots". Honestly, when someone gets ranting about the importance of k/d, my eyes start to glaze over and it feels like I'm discussing philosophy with a turnip. Most of the adult gamers in the community would support this, as they understand that we have other things in our life, and the game is meant as a fun distraction.

          • Honestly I don't care. I love playing competitively and I also love having fun.. Using shotgun, thorn, auto rifles whatever i don't like to try hard at this game to keep a good "kd ratio" I play for fun because no game types are really competitive yet.. I admit I'm a good player it's because I have played ghosts all year to this.. It's different but I have skills on a Visio game (yes I just said that) Those kids with a high kd have to thank camping

You could have a K/D of 0.5 and still be a hardcore gamer. It's absurd for anyone to suggest otherwise. Also, even just regarding skill in, say, Rumble, K/D is a poor indicator... especially with the balance of the game as it is now.

            • Casual = you play occasionally, maybe a couple hours a week Hardcore = you play a lot, you might be good and you might suck Competitive = you're good at the game (and have a good k/d to prove it). Usually fall into the hardcore category but not always.

Tell your friend he can talk KD after the horrible lag or lag comp is fixed. I've played overseas servers on other games that didn't have this much lag or lag comp. Tone it down or fix it Bungie. BTW, even pros go negative.

I think the idea of kdr being your judge of skill is stupid. I have a wife and a kid, you try explaining to them that you can't pause the game. Also my kid likes to play online and God bless him but he isn't great. However when I'm undisturbed & have the house for myself I usually go at least 1.5/2 which isn't bad. So I'm better than most players online. However there are some idiots on the forum who will read my opinion and say 'well you are clearly a terrible player as your kdr is only at 1.10' I honestly don't care what my kdr is. I already have a job, a house, I don't need another spreadsheet in my life. Also, destiny and the halo games before it, are not hardcore games. Sorry, there is too much auto aim and the enemy kill boxes are far to generous and the mele range is about 9 feet. You want hardcore tactical online play? Try rainbow 6 it will blow your mind. You want a hardcore single player game? Try dark souls or FEAR. I love destiny but it's a pick up and play game. I'm usually running on a treadmill when playing it. Hell I watch Netflix when doing the strikes. I feel sorry for players who loose sleep over their online statistics in a GAME THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN.

                • My kdr is dropping off for 2 reasons. 1: Stupid bounties (scout rifle headshots) 2: people using exotics while I still only have blue weapons.

                  • This is just the community that bungie and Activision has. KD ratio should not be taken as seriously as these people take it. Especially in this game. I have seen many horrible players with a good kdr. Yes, they can shoot things, but they can't grasp mechanics and can't platform well. So like the kdr people would say: if you have a bad kdr, you shouldn't participate in pvp. And vice versa, if you suck in pve, stay in the crucible.

                    • KDR is invalid bc of bounties. If I had it my way (hand cannon, sniper only) I would be 2.0 at least.
