Have you ever known a deluded person who knew they were deluded? Delusion doesn't work that way. They don't know how they can believe what they believe any more than a schizoid knows why they see eyes looking at them from the wallpaper. The fact is, the evangelical fundamentalists ("fundies"), suffer from the "God delusion" because it was instilled in them at are early age by family, society, and/or their culture in general. If wouldn't matter if it was a flying spaghetti monster instead of a crucified mortal who ascended into heaven, they would believe in it with the same passion because it's a delusion. Some are able to overcome it and, if you've ever read deconversion testimonials, they are often the most opposed to the perpetuation of the religious myths and superstitions. Fortunately most Christians don't really believe in their religion or don't know enough about it to know if they believe it. Those are the traditionalist and the casual Christians. The most "whack" hangers-on, the "fundies", are a vanishing breed and will soon be gone. All religions are dying as they must, but the fundies are being put asunder by the spread of truth with considerable thanks to the internet and the new atheism movement being led by the "Four (sadly soon to be three) Horsemen".
