Destiny Story is far more complex and designed to make you ask QUESTIONS

So let's be honest everyone. This is the first game in a 10 year long saga. It is supposed to establish the general mythos of the universe, introduce us to various factions that exist and give us a bit of information about the events going on around Earth. now, if what the AMA on Reddit is even remotely close to true, we know that Destiny might have been very different than its current incarnation. But we'll never really know now and one of the things I like to keep in mind is Occam's Razor: the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. And keeping a simple story line so that way you can grow the franchise does make MORE sense than writing yourself into a box with an over complex story line. (Think Mass Effect, I truly think the writers just could NOT figure out how to get to an emotionally satisfying conclusion with the material they had created in prior games. Hence, the terribad initial ending.) So what does the ACTUAL incarnation of Destiny offer to us? An unbelievable number of possible directions and hundreds of questions that need to be answered (eventually). Let's deal with stuff sequentially. THE FALLEN 1. Who the hell are the Fallen? How many Houses are there? They regenerate limbs, is this the source of our reborn Guardians? 2. the Fallen are EVERYWHERE. They have invaded: Earth, Moon, Venus and the Reef,. Why are they able to spread themselves so widely? What power lies behind this spread? Especially if the Houses are not acting in a coordinated fashion? Of if the House ARE acting in a coordinated fashion, who's doing the coordination? 3. What's up with the Fallen House names? Obviously translations but names mean something. THE HIVE 4. Found on Earth and the Moon. They've dug up seemingly the entire moon to create a series of warrens that are enormous. Why? And what in earthly hell was that roar in the shrine of oryx mission? Whatever made that is big, like REALLY big. Like, pass me the nuke launcher, rockets just won't do kind of big. 5. Where do the powers of the Hive Wizards come from? 6. How do Ogres come to be? Is it multiple rituals that embiggen them and make ultimately Telthor the Unborn? And if he's unborn, where'd he come from? 7. After you kill Sardok, Ghost informs you the Hive were communing with something OUTSIDE our solar system. What is that thing? And is it approaching us? 8. What materials is the Sword of Crota made out of and how does it absorb the Light of Guradians? Why don't the Hive use this tech on all their weapons? THE VEX 9 Biological machines with a collective consciousness and a distributed computing layout that apparently decided that most efficient means of accomplishing their goals was the worship of the floating gooey black mass (I call it The Aspect, as I think it's an aspect of the Darkness). a. Why worship? Particularly from a computing system where worship might interfere with efficiency. b. Are they allied with the Darkness or servants? 10. Instant teleport is a neat trick. What that source of the tech and why not use it everywhere? 11. Why Venus? Until humanity's Golden Age, the planet would be a hellhole. (900F, air pressure 90 times our own atmosphere, no oxygen, lots of sulphuric acid). So what's there? 12. How and why do they convert entire planets to machines?! 13. Vex also have an interest in Mars. Yet again, why? Dusty desert worlds are kinda not like hot, jungle worlds. So what else does Mars have? Is it just the "location" of the Black Garden? 14. Why did the Vex ignore Earth? Its right between Venus and Mars! THE CABAL 15. Space turtles on Mars. With big guns. Why Mars? Food can't be very abundant and as a militarily dominated society, feeding troops is kind of important. that means Mars has something they want. What? 16. They obviously don't mind having (or maybe using) Vex equipment inside their bases, even though its demonstrated pretty clearly it can be kind of dangerous. What do the Cabal know about the Vex we don't? 17. They blow up planets and moons for fun! How? Why? How? 18. They're awfully interested in Clovis Bray? Why? HUMANITY 19. the Golden Age tech we see doesn't look all that advanced beyond today's stuff. So how advanced were we really? 20. How much of our tech is reverse engineered from Fallen/Vex/Cabal tech? 21. The Awoken are obviously genetically related to us, being human looking, but they come from the Reef. What happened out there to make the Awoken? And what are they awakening to? 22. We see Russia and China had tech to lift people into space. Seems like the Cosmodrome was used to ferry people to developing colonies. How many colonies were there? 23. We get an NLS (Near Light Speed) drive for our ship early on, yet Ghost talks about pathways to other galaxies in the Library on Venus. So did we possess FTL (Faster Than Light) drives at one point? Does that mean there were colonies in other solar systems? What happened to them? Are they the source of the Awoken? Or perhaps the Hive? (The Hive are VERY humanlike after all and they seem to worship the Darkness......) 24. We created AIs that were powerful enough to outthink the Vex collective mind. Apparently several of them. theyre called Warminds. Then suddenly they're all gone. Except Rasputin. A Warmind named RASPUTIN. And he is apparently active and still on Earth, protecting SOMETHING at all costs. And he's linked up to a Clovis Bray facility on Mars, a corporation (or think tank?) that researches energy of some sort. Why? I could continue, but these are major plot point questions that I've thought of as I played through. they're importatn because if Bungie wants to make this game last 10 years, they need to have lots of areas to explore and make the experience unique for each player. An example: the Queen's Bounties. How does the Queen find her Champion among the Guardians? have them do stuff for her. When the Reef storyline hits, perhaps each Guardian will get a slightly different story based on how well the Queen likes you (0 rep and she's cold, level 3 rep and she's VERY friendly and makes you her Champion). the thing is that Bungie REALLY needed to get ALL the stuff out there so people could see the world and begin asking questions. And the start of a game ALWAYS is going to have the least content. So let's begin exploring and thinking of what the world might become.

Hope you don't mind, Corran but you've given my imagination a shot in the arm again and I wanted to just have a play around with some of your questions here. [quote]THE CABAL 15. Space turtles on Mars. With big guns. Why Mars? Food can't be very abundant and as a militarily dominated society, feeding troops is kind of important. that means Mars has something they want. The Cabal are a pretty military outfit right? Inspired and named for the Romans - really defined by soldering, and rank: Centurian, Phalanx (ok that's Greek) Cerberus Vae III - really geared for WAR. and Mars - well...Roman god of War... 16. Maybe the Cabal have got quite a history with the Vex.. Those Vex can travel in time - surley they get around bit. 17. Fun? Maybe. Necessity? Maybe more so - The Romans (who inspired the Cabal) were very fond of Scorched Earth tactics and poisoning wells they couldn't hold. And their Grimoire card hints that they might be fleeing from something... 18. Clovis Bray - I can't remembered where I read it (might be grimoire) but I think Clovis Bray were a weapons development company. Given the Cabal's prediliction for high-calibre ballistics and peace through superior firepower, maybe they're just looking for a bigger gun?

        • But it doesn't adequately explain the setting, time period, plot line, or characters. DESTINY IS ACT 1 of the Saga where this stuff is supposed to be introduced. It poses half finished plot lines, resolved barely answered questions with a "lets go to the moon" , and the only meaningful dialogue with the Queen who seems to know stuff is interrupted by her snarky ass brother who gives you no useful information and actively prevents you from finding out what we need to know. Hell I don't expect any character to hand out free information to a stranger/ earthborn awoken but dammit I brought them a Gatelord head with no exposition as to what it would do or why they needed it.

          • This is a good point made. I enjoy the fact that there are so many open ends leaving you in wonder, just like a movie with conclusion open to your own interpretation.

This a really great post, it contains all the stuff I really, really wanted to love Destiny for. There are fantastic story seeds that could really blossom, some truly excellent writing in some of these grimoire cards. The problem is those seeds havn't been developed, havn't been given proper exposure because if an ill-concieved out-of game delivery system. Havn't been fed by a competant narrative. And a plot full of undernourished seeds does not a pretty garden make. It's only so much manure. And that stinks.

The roar in the Shrine of Oryx mission is Phogoth, I believe. The Fallen on each planet are all different Houses. Devils on Earth. Winter on Venus. I have a hunch that the Fallen on The Moon are from the House of Wolves. But officially they are unknown. The Fallen are pirates and scavengers. Makes sense that each House would go its own way, and be more spread out.

              • Lol just wow man Yeh so it's so complex there is no reason to be doing any of the content. Also my awoken character doesn't know awoken even exist lol. Just excellent they definitely wanted the story to be like this. You can clearly tell half or more than half of the story was cut out.

A handful of those items are addressed (if not answered) in the Grimoire cards, FYI. :) And I agree with you . . . I see it sort of like planting a garden . . . you lay our the plot, till it and fertilize it, before you can grow things in it. Right now I see Destiny's universe as a prepared garden, with only one group of flowers in it so far (the first set if story missions, the strikes, the raids, etc.). Still lots more room in this universe to plant and grow stories, but the "soil" is all set for them. And, as you point out, there are TONS of "seeds" to choose from. :)

                • If you look through the grimoire cards, some of these points are answered or at least expanded on from the main story. Off the top of my head, the awoken have info and the ogres. But more too. Helps flesh it all out.

                  • As we enter the Archive on Venus, we are welcomed over the comm as Dr. Chang (I think that was the name) and we were told by our ghost to not worry about that little part.?.

                    • I think the lore is extensive and has obvious care put into it, if you take the time to read Grimoire cards. But I think they tried to do a Dark Souls-esque approach and try to make you find it out through item descriptions. Which as we can all see didn't work out well.

I'm not asking questions, nor do I care to. The game and it's characters fail illicit any real curiosity.
