Yes- the story was a little lacking in the whole, well, story aspect... but that doesn't mean that there isn't puzzle pieces to put together.
I wan't to put the puzzle pieces together blam!itt, so let's do just that.
This game has a wide variety of characters in it- and with those characters comes an individual story for each one. Let's get their stories out there. Anything that you've found out about, tell it here. I want to connect the pieces here gentlemen (and gentlewomen) to get more invested into the story.
I'm a Warlock, so I spend a lot of time around my Vanguard, Ikora Rey. I don't know much about her- but she did give me her Exotic Shotgun. And with it- tells a little story of hers. She seemed to be in a situation where 'they' tried to take her ghost. Who? and why is losing your Ghost such a horrible thing? is their a deeper connection between a guardian and their ghost than we know?
If you guys have any other weapons, armor, or even items that bring light to Master Rey- tell it here!
And what about all the other characters? If you know ANYTHING about them that could add to their stories- let me know!

The Grimoire cards gives a little insight. Lord Shaxx was a hero of Twilight Gap when the Fallen attacked. He was fearful afterwards that the City couldn't repel another attack so he formed the Crucible to forge new Guardians into something worthy. There is another card that talks about him indirectly as a group tried to bribe him to help them win in the Crucible but he wasn't going for it. He appears loyal only to the City and no faction inside it. Arcite 99-40 is his personal frame that has been re-purposed from a combat machine to a vendor.

If bungie half asses it to the point where the story is entirely on a website and non existent in game then its not worth my time.
