Conventional Weapons (Prologue)
People aren't happy with the story. It could have been other things. It could have been great. I agree. So I'm going to write a story myself which, hopefully, will at least be interesting to read. I mean it's not like we know enough for anything to be declared non canon right? LOLOLOLOLOL Enjoy. "Become legend."
"Where were they found?" Ghost One-Three-Three-Seven "Narrative Dissonance" didn't really like answering questions. She'd always felt that it was her job to ask questions and have them answered, or to ask questions that no one could answer, rather than being mandated to attend hearings where she would be barraged by many voices who didn't even really understand why they wanted to know what they wanted to know. In terms of the Light, a hearing like this was much like far too many strobes going off at the same time, and not bothering to remain in concert. Everyone wanted to be seen and heard, everyone in the stadium style court room---which harked to open air theaters more than places of litigation by her understanding---thought that they were particularly brilliant and ought to be noticed asking the best question. Representatives of the factions allowed to take residence in the Tower jockeyed for position. Each of them wanted to glean as much power or influence as they could out of any given situation, and quite often knowledge was the way to do that. It made sense. If only they actually managed to know anything worth knowing. "I don't think," she responded in the same flat, calm tone she always used. "...that's really important. Ladies and gentlemen." A murmur moved through the room. There was a basic misunderstanding between most 'people'---Humans, Awoken, and even Exo were considered 'people' where as she was not---and Ghosts in that somehow Ghosts had been stylized as servants of humanity. After all, humanity was the chosen extension of the Traveler's will, and the Ghosts came from the Traveler, so the Ghosts must have been specifically designed to aid humanity. It didn't dawn on any of them that most Ghosts predated humanity by quite a bit. It didn't really matter to the 'people' of this system, she'd come to realize. They didn't realize just why they and she were on the same side, and she didn't really want to trouble them with it either all. After all, someone had to hold the guns. Which was what this meeting was about. "Your name precedes your temperament, Narrative Dissonance. The council requests transparency on this note alone. In recent times, the Speaker has grown frustrated with our factions' squabbling---" The most outspoken among the council spoke up again. She wasn't certain just who the man was. An Awoken of vacantly glowing eyes and gray skin. The others seemed to dim when he spoke, and hush when he shouted. He wasn't all that impressive. Her Guardians could have made short work of him. With that in mind, she interrupted. "The Speaker already knows where they were found." She fanned the spokes around her central eye out, rotating them a bit to the left. A mimicked expression she knew to remind humans of a raised eyebrow and tilted head. "I had suspected he had shared that information. I attended this summons as a... a courtesy. I do try to be helpful." Another murmur swept the room. And then, finally, someone new spoke up. An Exo modeled after a female. Blue eyed, sleek structure, black colored with a broad navy blue stripe running between 'her' eyes by way of markings. "We know that they were found together. By you. The circumstances are highly unusual." Narrative Dissonance had always sort of liked the Exo, despite plenty of reasons not to. They had an exacting, careful, precise way about them. They tended not to phrase things as questions. Leading statements, perhaps, but it was a step up form the human incessant need to phrase everything as a question. "You aren't interested in the circumstances, though." Narra replied. "You are interested in their recent track record. Namely those of you spoiling for advantage in coming conflicts. They are very good at conflict. Am I bragging? I might be bragging." "What you are called is not... Subtle Pride or... Charming Modesty. I am not surprised." The Exo replied. Narra would have smiled, if she could. Exo were capable of a form of wit that the other forms of life inhabiting the Last City truly weren't, and she suspected that it was because they couldn't smile. "Our interest is in their capabilities. Some of us seek to understand their capabilities, and would associate it with their strange discovery and shared ghost." "You're jumping to conclusions, but I'll help you sort it all out. I will answer your questions, so long as they are directed to understand how these Guardians could be of use. Full comprehension of their abilities and... habits...may prove vital in their appropriate allocation." Narra paused, and then added--- "...they blew up a centuries old, Golden Age facility in orbit around Venus. I think you'll know all you need to know if you just allow me to share that story." A murmur coursed through the room again. Looks were exchanged. Did the Council really convene for story time? They didn't seem to know how to respond. Narra found that amusing. "If you're going to share, the Speaker should hear this as well." The loudmothed Awoken spoke up again. "He knows." Narra assured plainly. "Trust me." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter One is HERE!
