Need some PvP tips

Bearing my soul here. I SUCK at PvP combat. Most gaming I do and enjoy is PvE by with Destiny it seems I'm not getting enough fulfillment from that part of the game. So to any kind hearted players out there I'm soliciting advice on how to be more competitive. Especially with tracking enemy players, best type of weapons, etc, et al. BTW I'm a level 20 Warlock who just joined the New Monarchy.

  • Hi, Michael. Your play style is roughly going to change with the type of strategy and weapons you want to use. This is also true for you subclass that you have selected for your Warlock. Without knowing your skill competency in any weapon, your best setup would be to start with an Auto Rifle for your primary. Something with low recoil and high RoF. Until Iron Banner comes, damage is negligible at this point. So don't get caught up with it. Even a nice uncommon AR, like the Shingen C, is a nice PvP primary. SRs are underpowered, Hand Cannons take some skill and getting used to, and PRs are great at mid to long range. Special weapons will very, especially on specific maps. First Light and Bastion are larger maps that promote sniping. For maps that have tight corridors and cover, most will flock to a shotgun or fusion rifle. These two will vary on your preference. Shotguns are great for short range encounters and can be easily followed up with a melee strike. Fusion rifles require a charge, but have better range. You have to be careful when aiming, as players that strafe will be harder to hit with the full blast, only knocking shields down at best and opening yourself up for a shotgun shot or melee. Heavy weapons, like everything else, is situational. Rockets or machine guns are great. Use rockets if you want cluster kills or if you're not great at aiming. Machine guns will normally give you more opportunity to gain kills if you can be efficient and aim will with your shots. Grenades and supers are class specific, so you'll have to look at your skill tree and complement your play style with your weapon preference. However, grenades should always be your first thing to use when interrupting a control capture, identifying an enemy on radar, or tossing by some who is using cover with no shields. Tracking is a little tougher when compared to UAVs in COD or motion sensors in Halo. Enemies highlight quadrants and it is harder to pinpoint players if you are not familiar with the map. Crouch if you want to be undetected on radar, but strategically do this. Obviously don't crouch walk in the middle of a map where you're susceptible to sniper fire. Crouching walking while defending a base or playing Control can catch an adversary off guard, giving you a kill and defending the control point. Beware that using the crouch method and hiding around corners will net you a good amount of messages from angry players. Finally, Teamwork. Play with people you know and can talk to. Skill plays a part, but teamwork lets you coordinate movements, funnel enemy movement, and control spawn areas. I would argue that I would rather have a team that is somewhat unskilled but communicate well, versus a bunch of well-rounded players who don't listen (or can't) or have their own lone wolf mentality. Teamwork will get you the wins, skill will get you the kills. Running with a team will also reduce the amount of deaths your team will suffer, as well as share Orbs of Light to use your super sooner. If you don't have a large friend list who is playing this game, stick to two-man teams. Cycle fire when in a 2v1 situation and communicate who you're shooting at when it is 2v2. Keep supers on retainer if the odds stack differently (2v3+ or 1vX), as it may save you and your teammate from death, as well as net you a nice multi-kill. Hope this gives you a better idea on PvP.
