Its simple really.......we kill the Cryptarch.
Strange coins, motes of light, ascended materials.....anything but a rare from a purple.
EDIT: Just got Crest of the Alpha Luppi from an exotic engram from the vendor. The cryptarch has somewhat redeemed himself.

I feel your pain. I've gotten about 7 of them, all of which were absolutely useless, unless you count the items you get from dismantling them (so much of that anyway that what you get is kinda pointless). It didn't even get stuff I could put in my vault to use with another character 'cause the stuff in my vault was already better. Yes, I know it could be turned into strange coins which could be used for exotics, but I haven't even got that from those purple pos's - get strange coins from the occasional blue but never the purple. I know random is random, but what is the point of getting a legendary engram if you never get legendary items. When you get a blue or a green there's a good chance you will get a blue or green item; not so with purple-chances are you'll get crap. Here's an idea, give out fewer legendary engrams but increase the chance you'll actually get something you can use.

I may possibly be the luckiest Guardian ever, but the first purple engram I ever decoded turned into Gjallarhorn. Two days later I got the exotic bounty for Thorn. Wow, I sound like I'm bragging, like a ****. But it seems like I am extremely lucky

We fight our way up to the tower devastating the plebs and running away from lord Shaxx until we corner the Cryptarch in his room. The Titan beats down the door as the rest of the fireteam walk through guns raised with nothing but the hallowing sound of footsteps echoing through the silence. They gaze in the corner to see the cryptarch clutching every legendary engram we have ever given him. Turning to each other they all knew what had to be done. They raise their guns chambers loaded with the scorn of endless disappointment with their engrams as they unleash a firestorm of bullets and destruction leaving nothing left of the cryptarch but painted pieces of flesh on the scorched wall behind where he once stood. I would sign up for it.

Hey now, hold on a minute... Don't kill the cryptarch, I love him! Have him on rank 2, decrypted 3 blue engrams I got from a Strike, and he was so pleased with me, he gave me a legendary. That's right folks, if you kindly ask him to give you something nice, he can give you The Conduit even if he's only level 2! And now let me enjoy my happines ;)

Strange coins and ascendent materials are more improrant than actual gear and weapons.

First two legendaries: Chest engrams turned into 3 motes of light. Special engram turned into The Chosen sniper.

I feel your pain. But honestly, just buy your legendary gear. I've gotten probably 30ish purple engrams and hundreds of blues. I got one pair of legendary boots out of all of them. I just bought my chest armor/gauntlets/helmet. Use either your crucible/vanguard marks on a helmet and use the other on buying chest armor and gauntlets. Ta dah!
