Why I don't want to PVP [An open letter]

[TL;DR] I'd like Exotic Weapon bounties picked up in PVE to remain in PVE and not cross over into PVP because I do not like playing against other players. Dear Bungie, I'd like to start by saying that I am fully enjoying Destiny. I've loved the story thus far and can't wait to play more and find out where all of this is heading. I understand in an FPS-MMO that gear drops will not always be what I want, nor will they always be for my class, I've been around the block enough to fully understand all your choices, save the lack of a trade system, and appreciate the tremendous time and effort you put into your game. However, (There's always a "but".) in my years as a dedicated gamer, from the humble beginnings of shooters, into the golden age of Halo and beyond, I have grown as a person and as a gamer. In many ways, I'm more well rounded these days. My temperament is at a lower level than my teenage years and I've come to realize one irrefutable truth about myself, I do not like to play against other players. This has been a preference for some time now. I've shied away from Call of Duty and Battlefield because that is largely what those games are, I've continued to play Halo for the storyline but have not often touched the competitive multiplayer. When the Xbox One announced Titanfall as a game, I was excited. I was not aware, initially, that it was a completely competitive multiplayer game. I was fully aware when I purchased the game and played for some time with my friends, once again enjoying the rush that I felt whenever the enemy fell before my team and I. In short order, though, the game turned. It was not a patch or a feature added or changed. The game had remained the same but the temperament of my teenage years began to rear its ugly head. In my years, as I think all gamers experience, I played somewhat angry. Every death was some mechanic of the game gone wrong, an exchange I had been shorted on or any of the varying lies we tell ourselves. It was never to a more skilled player or someone who had gotten the drop on me at a time when I wasn't paying attention, it was always "shenanigans." I began to quickly realize, this is not the type of person I had grown into, and certainly not the type of person I wanted to be. To give you some context, I am a US Army combet veteran. I served 4 years in the Armed Services. 15 months of that in Iraq. When I came home on leave during my time, I sat down and had coffee with a friend. After we talked for about twenty minutes, there was a long pause in our conversation, which she broke with, "Yeah, you've changed." This caught me completely off guard. I still felt like the same person. I still made all the jokes I normally did, I felt there was laughter behind my eyes at every turn. When I asked her to explain waht she meant she said, "You seem a lot angrier than I remember." We didn't discuss the topic further but that conversation stuck with me and subsequently changed me.I observed myself for the next several months and my reactions to situations and I realized something. She was right, I had changed. My temper fuse was nearly non-existant. This was not the person I was when I joined the Army. It was not the person I wanted to be. So I made a point of avoiding certain things that I knew would anger me. What I realized was a chief source of anger in my life was competitive multiplayer video games. Obviously this wasn't a concern for my every day life, but if something I do in my leisure times makes me so angry, why would I continue to do it? So I stopped. I focused on non-PVP games and I had a blast experiencing a relatively unexplored side of gaming for me. But all of this leads me my point, I do not like to play competitively against other players and many of the exotic weapon bounties take me into the Crucible for some reason or another. I stumbled across one recently that asked me to get a kill/death spread of +25. I would like you to know I promptly abandoned that bounty and the chance for that exotic weapon. I did this because, at my very best, in any of the competitive multiplayer games I've played over the years, I have never been good enough to get a +25 on my Kill/Death spread. Never. I know that seems lackluster, like I just need some fire and passion, but for me, that passion lies with putting boot to ass on Mars and Co. Point being, I'd like to humbly request that exotic weapon bounties recieved in the PVE side of the game, stay on the PVE side of the game. As players like myself, or many other who may just not enjoy competitive multiplayer, will likely have a horrid time in the Crucible trying to complete these nigh impossible challenges for weapons we never intend to use on another player. Thank you for your time, your wonderful games, and all your dedication to your players. (Though I feel it often goes unappreciated by far too many.) Casually yours, RangerBeef309 (Xbox Live)

    • Thank you for your service. And I agree 100%. I too am not a PvP person and prefer teamwork and working WITH fellow gamers against enemy AI. I have issues with killing other gamers in a virtual space and am not happy with these bounties that force us into PvP. Please Bungie consider changing you bounties and removing the PvP element or allowing for a option. : Either play (and kill X Number) in PvP OR Play and kill X number in PvE

    • You shouldnt need to PVP to get a mainly PVE weapon, and you shouldnt get better rewards for doing PVP than PVE either imo. People get decked out easily doing PVP whilst the PVE'rs are left with the loot cave lol. Why they make you PVP to get an exotic weapon like Thorn and what not is beyond me. I suck at PVP because Im new to consoles and find the controller hard to use. I have the Thorn bounty so it looks like no Thorn for me!

I can't say that I agree with you completely about PvP but I do know exactly what you are talking about. I have gone through the same changes I just found a way to not get mad when I get beat. But I had to comment to say that the whole post was superbly written. It lists your grievance while outlining the positives Well done!

      • Extremely long worded way of stating a very simple point - PVE and PVP need to be two completely different tracks on the gear treadmill. Unfortunately, most games and devs do not see this. They don't want people to clearly abandon one entire aspect of the game. See WoW, with the legendary items usually requiring some effort in the BG. Achievements are one thing... they're usually not part of the progression bar at all. However, when you start to require the use of the "other" track to progress in your chosen path, then there is a problem. Completely agreed on the playing angry. Of all the people I meet in life, PVP GAMERS are by far the rudest, most angry community I've ever come across. They even go so far as to say I'm less of a person for not engaging in their type of game.

Thank you! I can see me abandoning this exotic weapon too. I would love that PVP is put into a separate section, but it won't happen. But I would love to see more support for those of us who just want to play the co-op and single player elements.

        • I understand exactly how you feel, currently active duty in the Marines and while I love competition and the PvP, I don't want it forced upon me, I got that same bounty, got a k/d ratio of 10 in a match (God I was on fire) next match I got slammed hard, 4 people on my team back out and I stubbornly stayed in the match I think I finished with a K/d of like .3 repeating and gave up on that bounty. It wouldn't be so bad if they removed the limit on how many marks I can acquire, I could do strikes and just get vanguard equipment. But I also get very angry very quickly with little justification, like it is a video game, it isnt like someone is physically putting their genitalia on my face but Lord help me when it happens in game. I had to but another xbox one controller after a horrible titanfall match resulted in me... disposing of the other, and I am in therapy to try and reduce this anger problem since I get out soon and they tell me to avoid competitive gaming, which shocked me. If there were other competition modes, I saw someone post about pitting two fireteams against each other to finish a strike first or something similar, I could do that, and not get anywhere near as mad as when I play crucible, not saying I don't but I only play with friends in it now

        • Wonderful write up sir. Very articulately said what I could not. Glad you made it home with the rest of us BTW. I tried PVP one night and hated it. Killed twice as often as I got a kill. I looked at some of the other players Legend and saw that Crucible was pretty much ALL they did. No interest in the game, story, lore that is the core of Destiny. Becoming a 'try hard' PVP is not fun for me, so I avoid it. I don't even pick up the Red Bounties. Games are supposed to be fun and PVP in this game is not fun for me. Hope things get better for you. Cheers

        • Before I comment I would like to thank you for putting your life on the line for rest of us, I salute you. I agree with what you've said completely, games these days are becoming way to focused on the PvP content. If you look at Call of Duty for instance they have actually pretty much abandoned the main story as a bullet point on the list rather than what made a game good. You play a game for its story, content and gameplay but in my opinion the story is lacking and short. Anyway I don't want to be forced into PvP which most have simply because you have a better chance of getting good gear than in the story. Another thing is there isn't any incentive to replay the story because your not rewarded for it. Even if you played on the higher difficulties you aren't rewarded at the end. In the end only Strikes and raids are left that don't have you killing other players. I am truly worried that the future FPS's ar egging to follow CoDs path of becoming brain dead PvP games.

        • I bought Destiny for the co-op shenanigans... PvP is really, really poor. It is so basic its almost like it was an afterthought, and coming from the people that got me into online gaming, this is an incredible disappointment. I am only playing it because it says you can get ascendment shards in PvP...ye' know, those things i need about 50 odd to fully level up my armour and at this moment in time, appear to be friggin impossible to get. I really dont see me playing this longterm as the grinding, is a wee bit too grindy. Was loving it... Until wednesday, when all my legendary engrams were all blue stuff worse than what I owned already, sort it out bungie, or unfortunately this will be in the bundle of games I can't be ersed wi anymore.

So agree. I was so dissapointed when I got my exotic bounty, finished the first requirement, then saw I had to play pvp; for the second requirement,. If not for my youngest son offering to do the pvp part, I would not have gotten Invictus, as I was abandoning the bounty whem he offered to do it for me. I do not play, nor want to play pvp I did not purchase Destiny, to play pvp, or to be forced into pvp to complete a bounty that originated from an vanguatd. bounty, turn in. My twitch game days are behind me now 8).

Ranger is right, I felt a rage like none other after 3 hours of useless PvP grinding for the exotic hand cannon. I'm just not good enough at PvP ON THIS GAME, especially when I'm limited to void weps for the win. I have a lifetime .7 K/D ratio on all fps shooters since the early 2000's... Never stopped me from playing even though I was booted from clans or ribbed for sucking. To be BEHOLDEN to a task like this will ostracize allot of "hardcore/not stat whore" guys like myself

          • PVP sucks balls, and why is it always the moon, match making is garbage and unbalanced. I've played the moon 10x every other map, and it's the worst map out of the lot. -blam!- the -blam!-ing moon.

          • I'm in the same boat. Doesn't help the fact that there is indeed so many cheats in the game. I see people all the time with full crucible purple gear and it's not even possible to have gained over 600 crucible marks already. There's a 100 mark PER WEEK limit. They and all game devs seriously need to remember not everyone is a mouthbreathing pvp turd and stop with the half-ass pvp games with some weak story mode shit on top of it. Sorry, as Awoken was my first play through the story is total garbage.

          • I completely agree with this. i obtained this mission from handing in vanguard bounties, it should have nothing to do with crucible. I'm no good at multiplayer so 3 matches in with all void weapons and a voidwalker warlock has only yeilded 53 out of 500 X(

            • I also abonded my first exotic bounty and will probably never accept another one. As you mentined I think my temper is not the same as when I was a teen, being forced to cause damage with a certain type of gun at the cruicible and every death will diminish my chances of achieving that goal is not what I though I was signing up for. I was exited for the DLC, but I just don't know anymore. I think I'll just save my money and be done with destiny in a while. This is the only game I have been exited for since Halo 3, BF 3 had me going for a while but I think I'm not a gamer anymore to many let downs this couple of years.

            • I simply don't PVP cause there's just too much PVE content. PVE alone is so time consuming and fun! I come back home from work, do all my daily missions, do the daily heroic, do a strike, over 2 to 3 hours have passed and I'm just pooped. I try a Crucible match for the hell of it and I get my @$% kicked cause I have no energy left. Which is why, I'm sorry Bungie if I'm not doing any Crucible matches! PVE alone is just so much fun that I would rather spend my time doing that than PVP! Whenever I play Destiny, I don't want to put PVE missions and content aside just to do Crucible matches.
